Licola to Walhalla Weekender. MEDIUM / HARD

Alpine National Park, VIC

See more trips

Plan is to complete the last section of our November HC trip that some were unable to do. We will meet in Heyfield then make our way to Burgoynes Tk, Along the way on Burgoynes, we will head down to Macalister Gorge for a lunch break then backtrack to complete Burgoynes. From there we will make our way to White Star Tk before heading to one of the steepest tracks in the Walhalla area; Toomstar. Depending on how we are travelling, we will set up camp at either of the following; Jorgensens Hut, Sullivans Hut or Merringtons Campground for the night. Sunday morning we will make our way to Deep Ck 4 and 1 via various tracks, then head back to Walhalla to air up and head home by 3pm in the afternoon, all going well.

MINIMUM vehicle requirements for this trip are as follows;

TYRES:                       32" minumum either A/T or mud. ( I will be running A/T's for this trip)

RECOVERY GEAR:   Basic recovery, snatch strap etc and winch is preferred.

UHF RADIO:               Either in car or hand held.

As those invited are all experienced 4wders and we have all been on numerous trips together, no need for me to go through my normal conditions etc. As we are driving through sections of national parks, no dogs on this trip. As usual, be self sufficient with food/drinks etc etc.

If some of us wish to drive up in convoy, we can make arrangements closer to trip date, but I do plan to stop at the bakery in the main street of Heyfield before heading to the servo.

Hope some of you are interested in taking part. Any questions, feel free to ask.

A few glitches in the system I think, PM had no subject in title had to click on Allan ?
Copy and past link and it says still subject to review by 4WDtrip team?
I have a edit trip tag and there is nowhere to join or register interest?

No one panic!!! I have gone about it a different way and beat the fucked system!!
On another note what a day, pulled seats out of the D4 and started, no attempted to make a false floor in the back. What a nightmare!!
So far have 2nd and 3rd row seats out, about 100kg out of the car, a false floor where the 2nd seats were with fridge, oven and thumper battery pack, basically the same as the D1. The rear will have a sliding section to come out over the tail gate and a hinged section for access to the crap under the floor, spare parts, jack, recovery gear and tools, even have a section where the spare scotch, wine and ciders will go ;-)

That's the 'Matt filter' that Kelvin put in designed to spare us from recovering LandRovers.... :-)

Nice one Alex, at least I didn't need to be dragged all the way up a hill...
But I can see some merit in a "Matt filter"...

Good to have you join us Dutchy, and now that Outrage has joined, trip is now full. Was going to ask Pauly to join us, but havent seen him on the forum for sometime, so thought he may have moved on.

As I said earlier, no issue if most of you want to head up Friday night, but it is unlikely that I will, so dont leave before I get to Cheynes Bridge on Sat morning.

Hi Matt,

There’s disco 4 rollover on you tube on Black River track we know the exact spot, you only get to see the aftermath and it looks like all driver error, worth having a look. And how they struggle up that hill going forward we (well at least me) reversed up when the river was too deep to cross lol
I don’t like the idea of the engine stalling if you roll back on a hill to protect the transmission though losing all engine braking etc not sure if this is truth eh.
Should have left the DHA on by the sound of it !

Yep a heap of driver error by the look of it. The whole engine cut out when rolling backward sounds like BS but I can easily test that.
The track doesn't look to hard but we all know how quick things can go pear shaped when a few little things all add up to one big end result.
Why he turned off hill decent is beyond me, surely you would leave it on to do its thing when needed??

Was giving some thought to bypassing the Deep Ck tracks on Sunday morning and heading to Low SaddleTk on our way out, as havent done that one for over 8 yrs. Will keep options open, as we may be able to fit all of them in.

Gaz the dog bones work most excellent. Actually have a working handbrake you get a lot more leverage so a good cheap mod.
The rear diff ?
10+ years ago when the air leakers were installed I was meant to get, and paid for solid pinion spacers to replace the ‘collapse to torque’ Toyota stockers. About a year ago (about 295,000 klm) had a small oil weep from the rear pinion seal so got my local workshop to throw in a newie, it was like $50 including labour and I told them to torque to spec as there’s solid spacers in there. Well a year later started getting a faint diff whine didn’t I, over Xmas. Not putting up with that so off for a new set of bearings and guess what.... no solid spacers. So torquing down the pinion nut when replacing the seal had squashed the collapsabile spacer that little bit more and thrown out the gear mesh FFS. So new crown wheel and pinion as well... Did. I say FFS ? I blame the butthead workshop who didn’t put the solids in in the first place. Anyway, new cw&p, new ail leaker seals while in there, new bearings and 1000klm of put-putting around ready to let rip. FFS.

That looks like a interesting track, along the bottom of the wall I take it?
Runs off Beardmores Gazza. Was closed for a number of years but has now been reopened but still a seasonal closure. River crossing at the bottom is one of the deeper ones in the area.

Agree Gazza, pretty poor form and I am not sure whether tripleader & participants would be covered. Ask yourself this, what insurance company would insure any person without full names, age, driver record etc with no official driver / 4wd training to lead a group of strangers 4wding.
call me cynical but I call BS

Have to agree Matt re; insurance. Maybe there was some cover in the early days, but not now. I remember you asking for details from the 3 members who were keeping the site afloat with $$$, and not getting a definitive answer.

Nice one your honour, Yep looking forward to this trip, and the trip to SA beaches, leaving at 5.30 am tomorrow return Monday. Cant wait to see how the D4 performs on some of the softest beaches in Aus.
Re insurance, could you imagine the cost, 4x4 Earth costs James, the owner, over $20,000 / year to host the site and cover legal costs. This site is nowhere near as big with a fraction of the traffic but $$ would still be there and insurance cover would cost unbelievable $$$$ giver the supposed cover...

Looks like a bit of a 'mixed bag' weatherwise for the trip. Checked a few different sites and all said a bit of rain, (10-20mm) on Tuesday 21st but slightly different forecasts for the Fri/Sat/Sun with one saying chance of rain on Fri/Sat & one other say fine all the way through. As usual, this will all change in the next week.

Not sure if I will make it Friday; all depends on work. If I cant get away before 4pm, I will meet you guys Saturday morning at Cheynes by 9.30am as not all that keen driving up in the dark and playing 'chicken' with roos etc. Add to that, have trouble setting up camp in daylight let alone in the dark.

the Gembrook fire is now under control and no issue, sadly not the same can be said for the other big fire near Cobden. over 10 homes lost and over 40,000 hectares burnt.

Thanks guys for a great, if not interesting, day yesterday. Shame it all didnt go as planned due to the crappy weather, and as others have said, it was the right call to call it quits & head home. Big plus was we did drive a couple of really good tracks during the day. We have to get back to Low Saddle one day, preferably when dry. It just wasnt worth taking the risk & continuing down to the river on that slippery section. Yes, we may of got down unscathed and as Gazza said I think we all arent all that keen on slippery clayish tracks, especially when there are no ruts to (hopefully) stay in. We will do it another time. BTW, I know Gazza, Alex & Outrage took a few pics, so if you want to put them up here, I can do a 'trip report'.

Just my opinion Dutchy, but I think the best option is running 'private' trips via this site. Invite who you want and if some cant make it, ie, you have a few spots available, then think about opening it up as a 'public' trip. I know that is the way a couple of members are doing it now, such as 'Big Kev' & Pauly.

Some great pics there guys. If you are all ok, will use some in my report.

BTW, you electrical/mechanical gurus; I have a problem with my winch. After each trip with river crossing etc, I operate the winch to get control box hot to help remove any water etc etc. Anyway, tried it today and it went 'click click' when trying to spool it out. When I tried to operate as per a recovery it worked perfectly but again, just get 'click click' when I try to wind it out.

Any clues?
25 Mar 2018
Alex (TEQ-80) Premium Member
Mine does that from time to time too Al. I slap the box while flicking the winch controller and it works fine. I reckon the contact solenoids move but dont transfer the current due to corrosion, The click you hear is the solenoids moving if its anything like my now 30 year old Warn :-)
26 Mar 2018
Trip Leader Allan (allanmac) Premium Member
Thanks Gazza & Alex. Will try 'Alex's trick' 1st and see if that works, if not, will attempt Gazza's fix. Conflicting reports re; solenoids on Tigerz winches as some say just one solenoid, others say 2. Not that I know, but would suspect 2 as winching in works fine, winching out does not.

Will now get onto the trip report.

Some good shots there. Added the few I took. Likely after easter before I sort the video footage I took, mostly from Burgoynes.

Was quite happy with the AT's, lacked the clearance for the little bit of clay on Beardmores, hindsight I probably needed to see if I could pop the front wheels out of the ruts so I wasn't diffing out.

That little descent on Low Saddle, that was like ice by the time I hit it last, wouldn't be surprised if Alex was silently hoping I could actually stop myself at the end without 'using' his car.

Wonder how things would have turned out if you guys tried Fulton's or one of those tracks along that valley, as Matt said they have rock in them but also some pretty big holes/chewed out parts along the steep sections. Hadn't done Low Saddle before so had no idea what to expect, good condition but pure clay probably wasn't much better hehe.
26 Mar 2018
Matt (Outrage)
Might be AT's but they are near to full tread so decent grip relatively. The large pumpkins on the patrol and the reduced tyre diameter got me on Beardmores though hehe.

The last downhill the small ruts still had decent traction being 3rd car, guessing by the time you went down they had probably been worn smooth and you just start skating down. That's what happened to me on the short downhill when I was last, the surface was worn completely smooth and I just took off like a sled (wasn't braking but it still took off).

Matt, I talked to Raslarr yesterday when I was there for my bike rack. He told me that if you call him and pop by one day, he'll replace the aluminium on your rear bar for free. He said that it happens mainly when the bar is posted, not fitted by them. They fit the bar, then the aluminium, taking out any flex prior to the aluminium getting stuck on. On bars they send away the aluminium goes on first causing some tension that can make it pop up.

Cheers Dutchy, mine was fitted by them. Issue started on a really hot day where it sat in the sun all day, thermal expansion was obviously too much and part of the adhesive (or whatever they use) let go. Was fitted late 2012, pretty much 5 years without issue, and a pretty minor one really hehe.

Not in the area all that often, if I find myself there at some point I'll give them a call if I haven't fixed it myself in the mean time.

he said they use sicaflex. problem is, the old sicaflex will stop you sticking it back on properly. thats why he said the only proper way to do it is remove and replace. maybe have a go yourself, if that doesnt work you can get them to replace it one day
