Another tour of Tallarook. MEDIUM / HARD

Tallarook State Forest, VIC

See more trips

Seasonal closures are not far away, so time to head back to Tallarook before the majority of the good tracks close. Most of the tracks in this compact area are of medium standard, (if dry), but a couple that will be included in the loop are Phone and Steep Tks, for those who do want a challenge. Whilst these tracks can be bypassed for those who do not wish to drive them, vehicle requirements for this trip are based on all particpants attempting either one or the other, or both.

32" tyres minimum being either aggressive A/T's or muddies. (Muddies preferred if wet).

Plan is to drive as many tracks as possible during the day and 'airing up' to head home by 4.30pm at the latest. All participants should bring food/drinks and lunchbreak will be 'somewhere'. There is a pit toilet at Freemans which we may pass sometime during the day.

PLEASE NOTE: As with all my trips, if you have not 'checked in' at least 24 HOURS prior to trip date, you will be REMOVED. Harsh, but been stuffed around by inconsiderate 4wders before who have failed to check in and did not turn up being discourteous to both the trip leader and the other participants.

This should be a fun day and is 'family orientated' so feel free to bring partners/ kids etc. It will be a big day of driving as would like to cover most of the good tracks in the Tallarook State Forest. A full tank of fuel will easily be enough for the day as I anticipate only about 100 klms of low range 4wding at the most. Fuel available in Yarra Glen or for those coming from the west, Broadford or somewhere on the Hume.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

No worries Alex, as I almost pass your door. Will meet Matt in Yarra Glen and I suspect Gazza will probably meet us there as well.

Lockers required? I got aggressive muddies 32 inch, 2 inch lift and rear LSD.. Would that be enough? Might be interested.

Thanks

No worries Gazza. If you go to Healesville Friday, I would think about staying there rather than Seymour. If you do decide to stay in Healsville, we can meet you and Julie at the Kinglake/Healesville & Melba Hwy junction, rather than you having to backtrack to Yarra Glen.

Thurstain, lockers are advantageous but not a requirement for this trip. Phone and Steep Tk are optional but I suspect most of the group will give either or both a crack. Both tracks can be driven without lockers by experienced drivers who have the minimum vehicle requirements as per trip details. If there are any of the participants who prefer not to drive them, I will take them via another route to meet up.

Hey Allen, I'm slightly "green", but very keen.... I also so only have a dual cab Triton, but it's had a 2 inch lift with 33's, winch, snorkel, and recovery gear.... I understand the trip is rated medium/hard so would appreciate your honesty if you think its best that I give this one a miss. Otherwise I'll check my work calendar tomorrow. Cheers

Tritons are a bit under rated Rob, much like the Pajeros. Is your call, but I dont put any pressure on anyone to drive a track that they are not comfortable with. Phone and Steep are not for the inexperienced, but as I said earlier, am happy to take those who do not want to attempt them around to meet the others who do. Some of the other tracks will be reasonably easy but there will be a few that will keep you on your toes.

Again is your call and appreciate your honesty.

Thanks Allen.... Like I said, if I'm free, and now, if someone drops out, I'm come along for the drive.... Just want to get some experience, and it's alway good to do it with a bunch of people that know what they are doing!

Mate, Honestly I don't remember I don't think I did. I didn't have a lift at the time but with a 2" inch lift and good rubber, you wont have any issues. Rob as Al said don't underestimate your vehicle capabilities. Those four words still ring in my ears 2.5yrs after that trip and I follow them today....."SLOW SLOW, CRAWL CRAWL" Rob you will be fine mate. Its all about keeping the vehicle on a straight footing, pick your line to keep the vehicle straight. we hate Angles, But remember I its up to you mate if you don't want to do nasty stuff then don't.

Alex, 7.45am at the Shell servo in Silvan; you ok with that? Gives me time to get my 'coffee fix' at the Yarra Glen Bakery.

Neil, I guess you will meet us at the water tanks as you are coming from the west.

Thanks Alex and Garry. There are 2 bakeries in Yarra Glen and I am now starting to use the one near the IGA, (opposite McKenzies Reserve). Nice coffee and has ok range of sandwiches/cakes etc.

For those going through Yarra Glen, we will make it the meeting point as plenty of parking available.

No worries Matt, didnt think you went via Silvan but if you do and we are there, feel free to stop.

Was checking when was the last time I went to Tallarook; almost 2 yrs ago to the day. Looked at a few pics from a trip I did in 2010 I thought we might try one of the tracks I havent driven since that day. Put up a couple of pics of it, and yes Matt, it has side angles...lol

Last trip there would be when Tony did his CV on Phone track, was that 2 years ago?

Thanks Trina, look forward to meeting you and your partner. We have a great bunch of people who go away on a regular basis and am sure you will enjoy their company, as well as some of the tracks we will drive on the day.

Most of the group drive either Toyotas or Nissans and it is usually up to Matt in the Disco and me in the Paj to lead the way just to make sure those other makes can make it...lol. (Just kidding)

Thanks everyone for your replies; re meeting place. Yes Neil, as you and Matt said, time flies as it doesnt seem like 2 yrs ago we were there when Tony broke his cv.

If I can just add, for those meeting at Yarra Glen, ( Discomatt, Alex, Outrage, Gazza/Jule, Greg and myself), can we change the time to 8.15am at the latest, especially for those who require a bakery stop, as I would like to have the 'wheels moving' by 8.30am as it is aprox an hours drive from Yarra Glen to the water tanks on Horans Tk. We will all air down here and make our way to the 1st tracks of the day. Still working out the route as to whether we will look at Phone Tk for early in the day or towards the end.

What do you folks prefer as I am not fussed, but it will dictate how I plan the day.

Greg, no pressure on you, or anyone else, to attempt the two hard tracks. If they are wet, (which is possible as rain is forecast this weekend and early next week), they will be 'character building' to say the least and no one in the group are interested in damaging their vehicles just to prove a point, if that makes sense.
18 May 2017
Matthew (discomatt)
Yep happy to look at the harder stuff late morning, time to warm up and get the feel of the tracks and time to do recoveries if needed.
I have been sent some video footage of a trip last weekend where a steering rack destroyed itself on a hard track and a new / second hand one was bough in and installed on the track to get the car out so don't want to leave the hard stuff to late...
18 May 2017
Trip Leader Allan (allanmac) Premium Member
Yes, was my way of thinking. A couple of nice tracks to start with, head over to Phone and let those who want to drive it have a go, then continue on and if going well possibly stop at the reservoir for the lunchbreak.

Alex, Matt (Outrage) and myself will still meet you at Silvan servo at 7.30am with Discomatt possibly meeting us there as well. If not, we will meet him, Gazza/Julie & Greg at Yarra Glen Bakery about 8am. As mentioned earlier, I will be going to the bakery opposite McKenzie Reserve,(next to IGA), so we can make that the meeting point. Aim to get to the water tanks around 9.15am to meet Neil and Trina, as hopefully we will be leaving Yarra Glen around 8.15-8.20.

Should be a good day and we will start the day on UHF Channel 18. See you all in the morning.

looks like you all had a fantastic time which does not surprise me with Al as a leader. Great pics Alex thanks for that. Did the gang like the new accessory? Tallarook is a fantastic place for learners and experienced alike. I just love the place. Disco pushing his Disco is always good to see, not bad mate for a guy who hates angles...lol. thats a nice ding on the disco mate, I'm sure you will fix her up.
