*************ATTENTION***********

Trip will only go ahead if the snow reports are positive, so please be aware that it will be cancelled

if there is no snow.

4wd's can have all terrians as long as you have a winch, which is mandatory for this trip.

The trip will start from Warburton at Ottery's carpark opposite Shell service station at 8.00am, please be a little bit earlier.

Trip tracks will depend on conditions but will mainly be around the Mt Matlock area, I have led this trip last year.

Want to confirm if my truck is up to scratch for this trip? 32 inch muddies, winch, recovery gear and all the fancy stuff but stock suspension. Did a couple other medium trips and had no issues.

Also what time will the trip finish roughly? Have work on Monday and need to head back to Western suburbs.

Thanks

What's the prospective route from Warburton? Up reefton spur to woods point I assume?

Liam (BeardMoto)
Also, I would like to make sure my car would be suitable. MQ patrol, stock leaves, 31" federals. All recovery gear (minus snatch strap), bar and Runva 9500lb winch. I hope that's sufficient.

Hi David I am just wondering if my mate johno and I can join this trip without a winch. Johno has a jk with 2 inch lift 33 muddies. I have a d22 with a 4 inch lift and 33 muddies. And we have descent recovery equiptment. We have done a few medium trip perfectly fine.

Any chance we can run 2 groups with 2 leaders if anyone interested can lead?

I'd prefer you had a snatch strap, it just makes it easier but a winch does help. I wouldn't envisage not to much trouble but there are couple of tracks around the mountain that can be challenging but you can always go around.

If you want to lead a trip that would be ok. But this trip is reliant on that there is going to be snow.

Anyone able to roughly outline this on HERE maps? I'm unable to find reefton spur on hema maps or HERE maps just so I have a rough idea and can plan around it.

We had a ball guys, check the Matlock snow trip from the 23rd (Saturday) lots of pics. Watch that river crossing at the bottom of Dearlove if you go down there, she's mighty deep, up to the windscreen and flowing hard.
Lotsa snow it was falling on us from around 900 metres.

Thanks for leading the trip Dave, it was a good day out.

For your amusement please read below.

Things certainly did get interesting for me after we departed. I noticed a weird smell sort of like a hot brake smell so I slow down to 30 km to assess. Accompanying the smell was a metallic scraping noise which I thought may have been gunk / gravel somewhere in the drive line from that big bog hole I went through at the end [BTW did everyone go through that?]

I pulled over to hear a popping and hissing sound coming from the back end and watched my driver's side rear tyre completely deflate in about 3 seconds. That's interesting I thought. Looking behind the tyre I notice my spring had popped out, obviously at that last bog hole. Friction from the spring had completely worn away the inside wall of the tyre and left a gaping hole. Shit. I've upload some images of the spring and you can see bare metal where the tyre has worn away all the paint. I set my bottle jack under the axle ready to jack up but first I have to bash this rear spring in while the axle has dropped so I get out the hi-lift and start jacking up the back of the car only for it to slip and fall onto the bottle jack before I can get to the spring. Now I'm in strife because I only have one bottle jack. I can lift the back of the car with the hi lift but I can't raise the axle now, no good trying to dig a hole in that road to fit the tyre it's full of rock.

Righto I have two option drive the car to a soft spot and dig a hole for the tyre to fit or come up with a plan B. I have my chainsaw so measure the axle height of the good side of the car and go and cut out a log slightly higher than that. Coming back with the log I then get the hi lift on the lowest setting and lift the axel enough to get the log under and then the tyre on. I drive off the log slowly and then have to jack the car up again at the back with the hi lift so I can bash the spring back in - finally success!

Let's just hope I don't get a puncture between Andersons and Warbi! Got home at 8pm. No-one passed me while I was working, it was getting darker and colder but job done.
