Mayford Meandering MEDIUM

Dargo High Plains, VIC

See more trips

Always wanted to do the King's Spur down to Mayford and have a camp on the upper reaches of the Dargo River / High Plains area.

Meet at Caltex Longwarry in the morning and convoy up to Dargo, last fuel stop. Lunch at Dargo store (or Pub) then it will be an early camp somehere on the upper Dargo Road, probably Collins Flat, lots of nice spots availabe, plenty of time to get settled in and spend the afternoon yarning and bending the elbow as life should be. Exit next morning via the river cutting / diversion Matheson track / Downey Road maybe a morning swim for some of us.....and back up the the High Plains road next morning.

Make our way down Kings Spur Track to Mayford, relaxing camp on the river Friday night. Not a lot of driving that day but its a slow trip down Kings. I gather the actual Mayford Spur track has been closed top at Dinner Plain end and bottom at Mayford end for many years due to some accidents and rumoured injuries so its King's in and King's out no choice, but I'd like to try and find the bottom end of Mayford Spur and have a walk and squiz at the old track if we can find the bottom while camped there.

No attempt will be made to drive it even if found as its gazetted as officailly closed.

Saurday morning break camp for the plug back up Kings Spur, then over to Blue Rag Range Track but this time drop off the back of Blue Rag all the way to the valley floor- about 1/2 an hour from what I've seen on trusty YouTube and upper reaches of the Wongungurra River, then turn around and come back up. Back on to the high plains road through to Twins Jeep Track and Dingo Creek Track to Mt Selwyn Road looking for a nice camp along the way.

Sunday is a leisurely putt-putt around the bush through the Buckland Valley Road and then heading for homethrough Porepunkah to be decided by popular concencus on the day. Maybe add an extra day if we're in the mood and/or find a great spot so bring extra grub just in case !

Theres' a couple of cracking spots in the Buckland Valley I know of too. 4 days makes this a relaxing tour of the Dargo High Plains area.

Naturally self-sufficency is required for at least 3 (and maybe 4) nights - food, fuel and a well set up vehicle. Normal recovery gear, winch IS preferred, minimum 31" AT tyres and low range, no SUV's. Trip will be cancelled if the weather is inclement - including high heat / total fire ban-  for safety reasons. Route may be flexible on the Saturday / Sunday after Blue Rag as that's new terrain to me and will be decided if track conditions dictate a change. Cheers.
