Definitely not the normal trip here the main focus is the walk into the Sir John Franklin mine ruins out the back of Woods Point. Supposed to be an old waterwheel and misc. ruins so hopefully not buried in blackberries or inaccessible.
I'm not a fitness nut nor the freshest slice in the loaf so it will be an easy pace but expect a steep walk down the valley, hopefully easy out to the other end following the river. It does show as a walking track but I haven't been along it so you need a sense of adventure we may have to climb out of the valley back the way we came if impassable. Sturdy shoes recommended and a backpack or camelback with supplies of water and nibblies.
To get there the plan is to start at Warburton and go to Big River then cut across to Woods Point, it's a nice drive but slow going will be in low range nearly all the way to Woods Point. You will need low range and A/T tyres so no SUV's but is suitable for beginners with bypass tracks around any of the steeper climbs. Plan to arrive at Woods Point around 3.00-4.00pm and camp for the night, either Comet Flat or Scotts Reserve, enjoy a few beers and a yarn round the campfire. Break camp Sunday morning, not too early, and will need to leave several vehicles at the Woods Point Hilton ( 5 minutes from camp) then ride share to the top of Webster Spur, then walk the loop to the back to the Hilton and ride share again up to the cars at the top of Webster Spur.
From there go out the top of Johnson Hill track on to the main road and home via Warburton. I'm really hoping for some nice pictures but if it's bucketing rain will postpone the trip until better weather in the new year.
A full tank of fuel will see the trip, need to be self sufficient for meals and water although a counter meal is available for tea at the Woods Point hotel Saturday night if you prefer.
This is a low stress weekend with a bit if 4x4 action hope there's people wanting to explore!
A working GPS is required and beginners are welcome - while there are some hills to climb there are no deep ruts or wheel lifting holes on the easier bypass tracks. Probably not suitable for younger children due to the walk too.
