BEGINNERS ONLY trip through Tallarook EASY / MEDIUM

Tallarook, VIC

See more trips
Running another of the fun and popular beginners runs through Tallarook.

This is STRICTLY FOR THOSE STARTING OUT IN 4WDING - little to no experience. If you join and it's apparent that you are experienced in 4wding, you will be removed from the trip.

The aim is to give you some tips and guidance that will make you more confident about yourself and your vehicle. The tracks will vary from easy to what may seem quite difficult, but you will have experienced drivers to talk to and supporting you throughout the whole day. There's no pressure, just out to have some fun. A short information session will be presented at the start of the day about the features and driving aspects of your vehicle, convoy procedures, etc. Then another short session at lunch about recovery techniques and equipment.

Full day on the tracks, so please bring lunch, drinks and whatever you need for toilet breaks. Will try to stop at the 1 area that has public toilets throughout the day.

Requirements for the trip:
A true 4wd - i.e. must have selectable 4wd gearing with low range (some newer vehicles excepted such as Amaroks that have extra low gears in the transmission instead of selectable low range)

A decent quality UHF radio, handheld is fine, preferably 5W.

If you have a compressor, recovery gear, tyre deflators, etc, please bring them as some won't and it's helpful to have them to share around.

Aside from that, just the desire to get stuck into it!

Winston, thanks so much for offering a trip for beginners. Most of the trips posted here are medium/hard requiring winches and vehicle mods that newbies probably don't have yet.

Not a problem Jim, it wasn't that long ago I was a beginner and had no idea where to start 4wding correctly, and this site gave me my foundations that I continue to learn and develop from.

Have run several in the past and they're always a fantastic day, lots of smiles and a bunch of drivers confident enough to get out there and start enjoying the tracks.

Look forward to meeting you on the day.

Cool Greg, it's been a while!

I was out there on the weekend doing a filming day, did Falls Creek Rd up from Trawool and then onto the track that follows the east side of the reservoir then hooks up to East Falls Tk near Warragul Rocks. Took us the whole day to do 2 tracks, both have some VERY challenging sections. Well worth a look if you're feeling adventurous.

You can get handheld UHF radios from any 4wd accessory store or Jaycar is another good place. No installation required. You can get a 5W handheld for under $200. For a hardwired unit and antenna, you're going to be over $300. As for installation, it depends how good you are with vehicle electrics. It's a very basic install with a bit of knowledge, you'll just need to find a power source to tap into, mount the base unit somewhere suitable and run the antenna wire through the firewall. For a professional installation it shouldn't cost any more than $100 or they're taking the piss.

So under 24 hours out from the trip and I can tell you it's quite wet up this way. I've planned a route that is substantially less difficult than if it were dry, however the reality is that tomorrow will be very challenging for all of us, especially on anything less than mud terrain tyres.

That said, tomorrow is still going to be a ripper day. We will take it slowly and keep safety at the forefront. We have 4 experienced drivers in the group (including myself), who will ensure you are comfortable with every stretch of track and obstacle you encounter.

Check over your vehicles this evening and make sure everything is in working order. Come tomorrow we will explore new horizons for what you can achieve in your rig!

Hey Brett definitely get it checked out but also make sure all the mud is off the rims, sometimes a big blob of mud can unbalance wheels and cause vibrations as the speed gets up. The Jeep felt like it close to self-destructing on the way home :)

We had an abnormal vibration in our front wheels too. I thought it might be due to mud unbalancing our wheels. I stopped at a car wash, cleaned off a massive amount of mud and the vibration stopped. Hope that’s all that’s causing yours too.

I’d just like to thank those that suggested looking for mud inside my wheels as a cause for the speed wobbles. Turns out this was indeed my issue that I couldn’t see in the dark last night.
Found a massive blob stuck inside a rear wheel and cleared it out today and no more wobbles!

        Lots of lessons learned yesterday!

Hi guys I've uploaded the .gpx route file for those who can use it and also put the map with the route on it in the files section as it won't be compressed that way. I've tried with the videos but it seems like they are too large in size for the files section so I'm in the process of uploading them to dropbox. Will give you the link once it's done.

        Thanks Winston,
What was the last muddy hill where you and Faris recovered that other guy in the DMax?

You can also use Google Chrome with GPX Viewer addon to open the gpx file on the map ;)

Craig that hill was West Falls Road, the section right at the very top of the map I've provided.

Ok guys, sorry for the delays, I've finally uploaded all my vids from the day, plus a couple from the following day just so you guys can get an idea of what sort of tracks we drive for sh*ts and giggles, and a better quality copy of the map. I urge you though to consider buying the map if you are keen on building a collection. The guy who makes them spends a lot of time and effort in their design. There's an extensive series, they are called Rooftop Maps and are available from most 4wd accessory outlets and many servos in 4wding regions. They're fairly inexpensive, many are waterproof, and they are a great source of information for planning trips.
