Now that most of the HC has reopened, and before seasonal track closures begin, I plan to head back to drive a few tracks we were unable to do on our recent trip. Whilst route is not 'set in concrete', tracks planned for the Saturday are;

Black Soil, Macalister River, 1st section of Butcher Country, Butcher Link, Caledonia & Dingo Hill.

As the section of Butcher Country from the Caledonia junction up to Howitt Plains is closed, it means we will have to re-drive a couple of tracks back to Licola. Even though this is a 'overnighter', I have no intention of camping and plan to spend both Friday & Saturday nights in the bunkhouse or a cabin at Licola Caravan Park. Bunkhouse has a fully equipped kitchen but no linen, so byo sleeping bags/pillows. I am hoping those who attend will spend $15-$20 per night to stay in bunkhouse, but if not prepared to do so, there are numerous campgrounds near Licola.

On Sunday morning you can either head straight home or join me driving Burgoynes, Deep Ck 4 + 1 to Walhalla then home; choice is yours. Minimum vehicle requirements are;

32" tyres (A/T or M/T), Winch, Full recovery gear, CB Radio (incar or handheld) with some traction aid & snorkle preferred.

Fuel is available at Licola or Heyfield so ensure you have enough fuel for the 150klm+ Licola to Licola loop. Saturday will be a big day with expectation that we wont be back to general store before 5-6pm.

If you wish to take part, let me know if you want to stay in the bunkhouse as I plan to book either that or a cabin in the next few days. Any other questions, just ask.

Good to see Matt, Digger & Alex join the trip. Have just booked the bunkhouse for Friday & Saturday nights, but cost is a little higher than what it used to be 10 yrs ago. It is $30 per person per night so hopefully that wont discourage any of you from staying. If so, just let me know. PS. We need a minimum of 4 each night to have the big bunkhouse.

Glad you joined Gazza; it's been awhile since we caught up.

Have just loaded a couple of files with a basic plan for both days. As you will notice, Saturday is a big day, but hopefully worth it. Sunday's route can be changed to possibly include Cheynes Tk instead of Burgoynes due to it being graded and we could also look at Burgoynes Gap Tk on the east side of the Licola Rd.

Hi Allan,
Having suffered a rear wheel bearing collapse on the 80 over Easter (note: never pay anyone to do something you can do yourself), 10,000klms life out of new bearings vs 290,000 klms out of old ones, the 80 is still up on the hoist and might not be rolling in time. As a precautionary measure I'm replacing the backing plate, axle shaft and hub as these all copped a flogging as a result and show signs of heat distress. Also figured out why my brakes temporarily failed in Tasmania that was linked to this issue too.... But hold my spot I'm waiitng on parts and hope to have it ready.
Dunno if the High Deluxe - which has a winch (hardwired to two batteries heh heh) but no traction aids YET- is ready to go on a high country trip as a shakedown bush run but I'm doing my best not to miss out on Dingo Hill this time !

No worries Alex, still 3 weeks to go so hopefully you'll be able to get the 80 fixed in time. Thanks for giving me a 'heads up'.

Trip Leader Allan (allanmac) Premium Member
A few things before I forget. I plan to take the Friday off and head up around midday; (to grab the penthouse bunk..lol). We will also need firewood for both nights, so rather than look for it on the tracks, might be a good idea if everyone can bring a bag, either from Bunnings etc or home. As we have the bunkhouse for both nights, we can leave all our stuff in it on the Saturday rather than have to pack up.

I am happy to load up the roof rack again, I don't see much point in paying a fortune for a small amount of wood in a plastic bag when there is tons just lying on the ground....
Hope you get the 80 sorted Alex, I would be taking it back to said mechanic for him to fix all the issues as a free warranty job

Never going back to that workshop, ever lol.
It would be like returning your toast in that road trip film because you didn’t order cheese- the waiter takes your order out back, peels the cheese off, sticks it down the back of his pants, farts on it, then returns it with a big grin, ‘here you go sir’
Nup, do it myself peace of mind knowing it’s done right beats the satisfaction of returning it for maybe more shonky work eh!

Fair point Matt re; wood, especially for Saturday night. Was thinking more for the Friday night as I guess some will be arriving reasonably late.

Sorry Gazza, cant burn the top bunks as if my memory serves me correctly, they are all iron. Also I think there is a coonara type thing in the bunkhouse, but that may have now changed.

Understand Matt, as I am told there are few 'snorers' on this trip.

BTW, just got back from Sydney for Cheryl's grand daughters 1st birthday and mention the trip to Nick and he is keen, (if he can get a leave pass), to join us. He has sold his trusty Paj and bought a 105 with everything so would like to give it a good 'workout'. I have sent him a link to the trip.

Allan,
I'll be swagging it instead of the bunkhouse hope thats OK.
80 isn't on the road but I'll putt putt up in the Hilux, park it for the weekend at Licola , and Pauly has graciously offered to chaueffer me on Saturday (yes, I've had to lower my standards but its still a Toyota) then I'll motor home on Sunday maybe via Jambo, see how we go.
Shame Gazza isnt on this one hope you get well mate.

Careful what you say Alex, could be a long long walk back to your swag Saturday night. He he he.
23 May 2019
Matthew (discomatt)
Whats wrong with the 80?
Why wouldn't the Lux be up to the tracks, there only a Lux but not that bad...
After I put a longer set of shockers in the D1 I have had the issue of the rear springs falling out on full drop on the last couple of trips so I went back to the drawing board.
After fitting and testing a couple of sets to get it right I think I have finally got the right combo. 2inch, constant 300 kg with a set of dislocation cones.
Looking forward to testing it out to see how it all works
24 May 2019
Trip Leader Allan (allanmac) Premium Member
Was going to ask the same question as Matt. No probs if you want to 'swag' it Alex as we only need 4 people minimum for the bunkhouse and at this stage we have at least that.

If forecast is correct, dont think we will have any dust on this trip.
24 May 2019
Alex (TEQ-80) Premium Member
Great thanx team.
I've replaced all the rear wheel bearings, new handbrake shoes and new disc pads and rotors in the 80, plus changed out for a second hand axle shaft, hub and backing plate on the passenger side so the back end is shiny as and ready to go. All relates to that failed wheel bearing and that relates to my brake pedal sinking to the floor in Tazzy so will make for a funny story - I've figured it out now and can sequence the failure(s) exactly.
Having farted around with the back end (no pun) I thought it best to check the front bearings as well while its up on the hoist and they've got a wobble too, same workshop did them as well. Just going to re-pack them as I'm on to it early so no failures, but I dont have time to do it this weekend.

The lux is bone stock, only on 29's (at least they are brand new BFG All Terrains that came on it) with no traction aids yet, although the spare disc-to disc and drum to drum 4.88 ratio diffs I bagged in Cowra road trip 2 weeks ago (cheap at $500 :-)) are already stripped with the centres out. Getting the e-lockers I got direct from Harrop in Heidelberg direct last week (Pauly will tell you about Captain ARB Tin-ass aquiring all sorts of bits here and there I'm sure) installed on Monday next week. Once they are in she's twin locked and will have the new 33's off the MWB (I kept the wheels and tyres) slung under her so she'll be twin e-locked on 33's, the 4.88's will keep the gearing standard to allow for tyre size.

I've got a factory turbo 2LT bellhousing off a guy wrecking a grey import Surf coming from SA to allow me to change from a G52 gear box to an R150 gearbox, which is getting built now with a low 1st and tall 5th (0.70 out of a Dyna truck), then an adpaptor from the R150 box to the gear drive transfer which is getting fitted with 4.70 low range gears which is about 110% lower than standard :-)
So with the deeper 4.3:1 1st in the R gear box, the 4.88 diffs to counteract the 33's, then the 4.70 transfers and twin locked she'll be a real crawler in low and a freeway cruiser in high with the modded 5th. Whew.
All shes got now is a winch but I'd have to skull drag it everywhre on those open diff 29 inch tyres....

Just a bit of an update folks.

Spoke to the guy at the Licola Caravan Park/General Store today and he said there is heaps of snow up around Arbuckle Junction at the moment & there should still be quite a lot around on Saturday. Alex & Matt (Outrage) indicated they wanted to take a unpowered camping site which has a cost of $28 per site that can be shared by 2 people, ($14 each). As mentioned earlier, the cost for the bunkhouse is $30pp and all cooking utensils, (pots/pans/plates etc) are available, so no issue if you dont want to bring your own. I can also confirm that the pot belly/coonara is still there, so could everyone please bring wood with them, especially for the Friday night. Hopefully we will have enough for the Saturday night as it is highly likely that any wood on the tracks will be very wet.

For those arriving after the 6pm closing time of the general store, go straight to the reception area of the CP to pay, or it can be done at 8.30am on Saturday morning.
29 May 2019
Anthony (Digger1982)

I am feeling better but not enough to sit and drive tracks.
29 May 2019
Trip Leader Allan (allanmac) Premium Member
Shame you cant make it 'Big Kev'; maybe another time. Good move to arrive by 6 if you can Digger, as that Heyfield-Licola Rd road is a 'pita' in the dark. My plan is to be on the road by 1.30-2pm.

Before I forget, the showers in the CP require coins; used to be 20c for 3 minutes but that may have changed so have a few silver & gold coins.

BTW, 'check in' is now available.
30 May 2019
Matthew (discomatt)
Still a very quiet week for me so I will be heading up early.
Google maps says to get off at Moe then go through Yallourn Nth. , Glengarry , Toongabbie , Cowwarr and Seaton as the shortest / quickest rout.
Do they have LPG at Heyfield and go longer or just fill up at Moe, thinking the Moe option is probably better as its only a 50 km advantage fill wise
30 May 2019
Trip Leader Allan (allanmac) Premium Member
Yes Matt, servo at Heyfield has LPG & it is where I will be topping up with 'motion lotion'. The way you mentioned is a tad quicker but it bypasses Heyfield altogether. I tend to turn off just out of Traralgon and will do the same this time as need to stop at Dan Murphy's for some grog. Let me know if you want to head up together; sometime between 1.30-2pm.
