4 day High Country Trip - Walhalla to Jamieson/Mansfield. (Date Change) MEDIUM / HARD

Alpine National Park, VIC

See more trips

PLEASE NOTE:  Trip date has been changed from March 14-17 to April 25-28 due to the Gippsland fires and the numerous track/road closures.

This trip will be similar to the one I ran a while back, but in the opposite direction. The planned route has a bit of everything; steep & rocky ascents/descents, numerous river crossings, as well as visits to some of the iconic high country huts. Listed below is the basic plan, but this can change due to unforseen circumstances;

Day 1. Erica to Macalister Gorge or Cheynes Bridge.

Will leave Erica and make our way to 2 of the Deep Creek tracks, (1 & 4). Then head to Burgoynes Gap track via the last section of Fultons and either camp the night at Macalister Gorge or Cheynes Bridge, depending on how we are travelling.

Day 2. Overnight camp to either Lovicks or Howitt Hut.

From overnight camp we will make our way into Licola to refuel,(ULP & Diesel available), then head to Howitt Plains via Macalister River Tk, Butcher Country Tk or Dingo Hill Tk. If all going well, we continue onto King Billy Tk to Lovicks Hut for overnight stop, or if we have hold ups, we will stay at Howitt Hut.

Day 3. Overnight camp at either Sheepyard Flats or Frys Hut.

From wherever we camp on Day 2, we will make our way towards Mansfield visiting Bluff & Bindaree Huts, Bindaree Falls and Craigs Hut. From there we will make our way down to Sheepyard Flats or Frys Hut for our last overnight camp.

Day 4. Overnight camp back to Melbourne.

From our campsite,we will then have a leisurely pack up in the morning & head home via Mansfield.

This trip will involve some long days 'behind the wheel'. I am hoping to be at our overnight stops by aprox 4-5pm everynight. Ensure you have enough fuel to cover aprox 400klms with a high percentage of this being in low range, so if unsure carry a 20ltr jerry. I would suggest everyone tops up with fuel in Moe before our meet up at Erica.  We will be driving some reasonably narly tracks so ensure you vehicle is in good condition & has the minimum requirements for this trip.  In regard to river crossings, a snorkel is preferable but if you do not have one, please have a water blind/tarp just in case some of the river crossings are high. All participants must be self sufficent with food/water & camping gear etc and please note that no dogs/pets on this trip as we will be driving through National Parks. Vehicle/Driver requirements are as follows;

VEHICLE REQUIREMENTS: - Minimum of 32" tyres either A/T's or M/T's. No HT tyres or SUV type vehicles; all must have low range. Full recovery gear, UHF Radio

DRIVER REQUIREMENTS: -  Must be experienced, not suitable for drivers new to 4wding, (preferably participated in at least 5 trips on this site).

I have the descretion to remove members if they do not have the minimum vehicle/driver requirements along with anyone who continually joins a trip here then pulls out at the last minute, (which there are many). Am sure those who do take part will have a very enjoyable and challenging trip. Most overnight stops will have pit toilets available so feel free to bring partners etc.

.Any questions, just ask.

Yes it did Brenton, which was a bit of a surprise. I know you and Eddie were/are really keen, so if this is still the case and you both are 100% committed, both of you please send me a PM and I will see what I can do.

Good to see some members who I have yet to meet join up, and it will good to catch up with Julius and Rick again, along with Thurstain who I have met, but yet to join on a trip.

Whilst trip is still some weeks away, I am probably going to stay the Wednesday night in a cabin at the Erica Caravan Park and have a 'hot rocks' steak at the Erica Pub. If anyone is interested, either in a cabin or just to camp, let me know and I will get in touch with them and let you know the costs for the overnight stay.

Yes, it is a good place Thurstain. I am hoping to get away late afternoon on the Wednesday rather than leave at 'sparrows' Thursday morning. Am yet to ring the park, but will do so next week and pass on the info re; $$$$ etc,

Rob, at this stage I wont increase limit above 8. Have run similar trips with 10-12 vehicles and it just slows everything down for all concerned; convoy gets too spread out etc etc.

I suspect 1 or 2 will pull out prior to the trip, so keep checking.

I am in the process of finalizing the route for this trip, but need everyone attending to advise me of a couple of things. Days 1 & 2 are pretty well 'locked in' and it is more likely that on Day 2 we wont get to Lovicks Hut for the night with Howitt Hut being the probable overnight camp. Day 3 will be decided by what the majority want to see, so EVERYONE please let me know if you wish to visit Bindaree Hut, Bindaree Falls & Craigs Hut. If the majority wish to do this, we wont head towards Jamieson but spend our last night at either Pikes Flat or Frys Hut. I have seen all of the above numerous times but if you havent seen them before, they are all well worth a visit. If the majority wish to go down this path, we can do the Jamieson section another time.

Looking forward to your replies.

Hi Allan
Firstly thanks for putting this great trip together.
I personally haven’t seen any of the sites you listed. I have no preference, I’m more than happy to make our way to Jamison if that’s what the group decides.
Thanks.

Thanks to those who replied, greatly appreciated. As Peter & Chris did not reply, I will go with what the majority would prefer, so will adjust the trip accordingly to include visits to Bindaree Hut/Falls and Craigs Hut. This will mean our last overnight camp will be at either Sheepyard Flats or Frys Hut with Frys my preferred option.

Thanks for the reminder to everyone re; 'checking in' Alex, as those who have been on my trips know that I am 'anal' in regard to participants doing so by the cut off time. I knew you would have joined us if you could and must admit thought Gazza & 'Big Kev' might have put their hands up. All good, as we have a great bunch of guys & gals taking part and hopefully they will all enjoy the trip.

Alex, you will enjoy all of those tracks with Climies probably my favourite. In saying that, they are all great and hopefully Balfour wont have as much water in it as it did the last time I drove it.

On another note with the trip now 4 weeks away, I am keeping an eye on any information regarding the Deep Ck tracks that have been impacted by the Thomson Dam/Walhalla fires. I doubt we will have an issue, but if so, I have other tracks lined up to get us to Macailster Gorge/Cheynes Bridge on Day 1.

Also I need to know if anyone else can bring a chainsaw on this trip. I will have one but 2 or 3 would be handy. Finally, I have been away over in Southend, (Beachport/Robe area) the last week or so and am yet to contact Erica Caravan Park re, accommodation on the Wednesday night. I know Thurstain is interested in staying also, so anyone else keen, let me know. I will be hiring a cabin but camping is also available.

Do the cabins have separate bedrooms?

I think I'll be solo unfortunately.. missus might not be able to make it. If cabins are reasonably priced I can either book one also or go halvies with someone assuming they have separate bedrooms.. Beats setting up swag on Wednesday night at 10pm.

Thurstain, they do have family cabins, ($120 per night I think), and happy to share one with you. From memory the main bedroom is separate and bunks are in the main living area. I will ring them tomorrow and let you know.

Honestly it's a bit expensive just for the sake of not setting up the swag. I was hoping maybe cost $80 or so for cabin.

Might call and book a camp spot.

Cost of cabin is $100, so $50 each. Camping is $15- $20 I think. No pressure Thurstain, as I am happy to stay in the cabin by myself, or someone else maybe interested in sharing.

So far the misso (fiance) isn't coming.. I'm fine with you taking the double bed if my missus isn't coming. If plans change I'll let you know then we can either rearrange bed plans or I can book a Campsite instead. But if I'm alone, I don't mind sleeping on bunk beds

Keeping a close eye on what is happening Matt. At this stage, no major changes required, as we are not heading anywhere near Dargo/Talbotville/Crooked River etc, but there are a few fires near Licola that may affect our plans. Will see what happens over the next few days. Just hope nobody has property or stock loss like what is happening in the Bunyip area.

Walhalla is also on Fire. Also I drove past Bairnsdale yesterday (90kms away from Dargo) and it's full of smoke. If we are going to be around the Walhalla fires, smoke is going to be a big problem.

I had a trip around Crooked river this weekend and just pulled the pin on it as some planned camps / tracks are on fire.. I'm thinking if this is going to be similar, I might have to pull the pin on this one too. Although I've got leave booked and really looking forward to this.. but better be safe.

Looking at your trip plan, we will be basically travelling between 3 major fires. Walhalla, Thomson and Licola fires.. and a few more minor fires. Not looking too good at the moment.

Trip Leader Allan (allanmac) Premium Member
Understand your concern Thurstain, and totally understand if you, and anyone else for that matter, prefer to pull the pin. At this stage, the planned trip will still go ahead as the Walhalla fire does not impact us. My real concern is the fire S/E of Licola that has closed the Licola Rd and the 2 up near the Snowy Range airbase. Whilst these 2 are not big, they are both close to Butcher Country Tk.

As we all know, things can change very quickly when it comes to fires, so I will make a call by the weekend in regard to the trip.

Yes Paul, a bit of rain is falling around Dargo now and forecast is for some good falls in the next day or so. Let's hope the heavy falls are in the fire regions.

Well folks, things are looking pretty grim for our trip. Just got the latest update of track closures and many of the tracks/Roads in our loop are currently closed. Some of these are as follows;
King Billy Tk, Bluff Tk, 16 Mile Jeep, Bindaree Rd/Campground, Howqua Tk, along with other roads such as Licola, Howitt, Brocks and Bluff Link. Also closed are numerous campgrounds which include both Lovicks & Bluff Huts along with Sheepyards Flat, Frys Hut, Pineapple & Pikes to name just a few. Unless they are reopened in the next few days, we will either have to cancel or completely change, and shorten, the route that would still start from Walhalla. Let me know what you folks think.

Was informed late this afternoon that many of the tracks between Howitt Plains & Mansfield are unlikely to re open for at least a couple of weeks. Totally understandable as it better to be 'safe rather than sorry'. Will speak to a govt dept tomorrow but at this stage it is highly probable that trip will be postponed until late April. I will post here tomorrow with update, so everyone check at some stage.

It is not looking good, I’m happy to wait a few more days and see but also think even if some tracks open the last thing cfa needs is 4wds Criss crossing around up there. Keen as to go (I even just put in a rear locker😁) but will also be happy to wait till the end of April. I’ll leave it up to you Allan and support what ever decisions you make.

DATE CHANGE FOR TRIP. Due to the fires & road closures have changed trip date to late April. I have left everyone who have signed up for the trip as is, but if dates do not suit you, please withdraw from the trip. Apologies for changing date, but in reality I had no choice.

Fully understand the reasoning behind the date change Allan. I'm ok with the new dates. I'm lucky I'm rather flexible with annual leave dates so can cancel the days I had in. Or I might just have a few days R&R

Cont. Spoke to DELWP office in Mansfield this morning and even if fires in the Jamieson/Howqua area & up near the Howitt Plains are extinguished in the coming days, it is most unlikely that any of the closed tracks/roads/campsites etc will be opened in the next week or so as all areas will need to be checked 1st.

Again, sorry for having to do this, but there is no point in running this trip if we cannot access tracks on the planned route, as well as for safety reasons, I have also changed my booking at the Erica Caravan Park to Wed night April 24th as I still plan to head up that afternoon and have a meal at the Erica Pub.

I already have those days booked as annual leave (starting from Easter all the way through to the end of the week). So far I have no plans, so the dates suit me, unless other commitments come along. Either way I will have a definite answer at least a couple weeks before the trip.

I was really looking forward to the trip, so I'll try my best to make it.

Not sure who is camping, but Trevor & Tracey have a cabin, as do I. I still plan to get there around 6ish and then go to the pub for a meal.

At this stage, King Billy Tk is STILL closed and if it isnt opened in the next week or so, will contact authorities in Mansfield to find out if/when it will reopen.

Also, just an update re King Billy Tk. Spoke to both Heyfield & Mansfield DELWP offices today and it it is highly likely King Billy will remain closed if it is not opened prior to Easter. This track has always been a May seasonal closure and authorities see no point in opening it for just a few days. Fingers crossed it does reopen by Easter because if not, it will have a big impact on our planned route that will need to be changed.

Well folks, latest news is that King Billy Track will not reopen before our trip, which means I had to change our planned route slightly. This means we will not be able to drive up Butcher Country Tk to Howitt Plains as Howitt Road & surrounding area is also closed.

All is not lost, as the majority of the route is unchanged but now includes 3 tracks I have never driven but one of them, according to the reports I've read, is as good, if not better, than Butcher Country.

I have attached a file with the basic plan and please note I have been very conservative with times allocated to each section. If all goes well, especially on the 2nd day, I anticipate the duration of each day will be at least 1 hour less.

Thanks Allan, so by your calculations we should not travel more than 450 kms between major fuel stops (Caltex Moe to Caltex / BP Mansfield).. As I try to not fill up at the "General Store fuel" as quality is sometimes questionable.

I'll have 120L of diesel leaving Moe, and worst case that should see me for at least 600kms.

Thanks for the detailed plan you uploaded. Too bad a section will be closed but I'm sure we will still have fun! Plenty of tracks around there.
10 Apr 2019
Trip Leader Allan (allanmac) Premium Member
You should be fine fuel wise if you top up in Moe Thurstain. Yes, a shame about the track/area closures but 'it is what it is'. Still a very slight chance King Billy may reopen, but most unlikely. If it does, we will go back to the original plan.

No hot rocks at this stage , by the time I get home from work and do the final pack it will be 5 before I leave the house and with the traffic on the freeway at that time it would take me an hour just to hit Pakenham . Correct Matt, they have closed everything in the Alpine NP now. Main reason that Macalister, Butcher Country, Caledonia, Dingo Hill Tks are closed is to stop 4wders having access to Howitt Plains. They have also closed Glencairn Rd, which according to the CFA guy I spoke to today, is likely to be revoked as it is not part of NP.

Have added another file with the probable route for Day 2 due to track/road closures. I have no idea how hard or easy a couple of the tracks are, but according to the rooftop maps, there are a few steep sections. Guess we will just 'suck & see'.

At this stage, we have 4 staying in the family cabin on Wednesday night, Pauly, Paul, Julius & myself. Julius & I are heading up between 3 & 4 tomorrow arvo so if Pauly & Paul can give me an aprox time they will arrive, it would be greatly appreciated. By the way, my computer died yesterday. Scheduled elec works throughout the day and when I got nothing happens when I try turn it on. Looks like some damaged capcitors in the PSU so no video from me till I can replace the PSU and see if that works.
