Bucket list time,,,

If your a keen 4wd'er then you'll relise that Australia is one of the best places to wheel. We have it all, from the Vic High Country, to the sands of Fraser Island and the Simpson Desert. Now it's time to start working on that bucket list and this trip will be no exception. Come and be part of the team from 4wd Trips to drive this legendary track, see the outback at all it's beauty, marvel at Lake Eyre, sleep under a blanket of stars every night and explore some of the old gold mining towns as we follow the old train line up the Oodnadatta Track. Once we reach top it's a short drive to Dalhousie Springs where you'll get to soak all that red dust out of your skin in a warm 38 degrees natural spring out in the middle of no where.

This will be one of them trips that you'll remember for the rest of your life. This is one of them trips that all the big 4wd TV stars have done and raved about.

Now it's your turn......

    Grant (308)
Jase, have just done Flinders, Maree, Oodnadatta Tk through to Marla, Ayer Rock. Farina Ruins a Must on the way up, Coward Springs a good stop. Tips: Spare Tyres and/or repair kits, water, fire wood, time of uear is very important!, fuel every 200kms (approx). Next time would have checked out Lake Ayre or Lake Ayre south more, a night at William creek Pub may have been good also. After Dalhousie head for Marla nd highway home.

Grant, cheers mate for that, I'll take it onboard

    David (Paul Patrol)
Hey Jase, any idea of cost? I'm gonna allow (save up lol) a minimum of 3k which I think should cover fuel & food plus any bite the bum scenarios. Do you think this is enough?
    27 Oct 2014
    Trip Leader Jase (Jase69er)
Dave, to be fair at this stage I'm not to sure. I've been spending most of my time working on the 'Little Desert' trip and apart for a quick google search I haven't really looked at the nuts & bolts of the trip. The trip will be around the 4000km mark and I can tell you that on another trip that I'm on (Cape York) we've worked out the trip is around 8000kms. This works out to be $3200 for fuel only. I think your 3k would be a good starting point at this point. This to consider would be how much food you bring with you, how much beer you drink, how many pubs we stop at for a 'Parma & Chips', camping fee's, etc.
After next weekend's trip is done & dusted I'll start to work on this trip and keep everyone posted.

Hi Jase, this trip sound really good and we enjoyed being on the road with you and your family. We are invited to another trip in March/ April , this is a longer trip that includes Uluru and Alice Springs....we still haven't been there. Wish we could do both...but hubby has just not annual leave. Well still enough time to decide.
    13 Nov 2014
    Trip Leader Jase (Jase69er)
Geez Mien, the kids will be really disappointed as they really like you guys.

    Trip Leader Jase (Jase69er)
Ok I'm going to start to research this trip as much as possible and post up what I find out. I'll also leave it up to the group on where we go, what we see and do, route there and route home. From my prelim search there is lots to see and do. So keep checking in every so often as I build the trip brief.

ps Mien, just tell Jack to quit,,, worked for you :-)

Jase, for what is worth i have uploaded a pdf copy of my travel spreadsheet. We could have spent more time on the Oodnadatta but were on a right time frame.

    Justin (Jusso)
    Hi folks,
I've just signed up for this trip and am looking forward to it. I'm happy to get involved with the planning as it will need a good amount of it.
For anyone who is visual like me, I've taken the stopover points from Grant's spreadsheet and put them on a shared Google map so I can get some idea of where we are going. You can (hopefully) see it at https://www.google.com/maps/d/edit?mid=zVEpimtB37JY.kOQPIbK1YboM
I'm happy to either update that map with any details/features you wish to provide or give you edit access if you want to help maintain it.
Jase, happy to give you the data if you prefer to maintain a map yourself.
    15 Dec 2014
    David (Golddigger)
This is certainly looking like a great trip. I am really hoping to be able to do this & thanks Justin for the google link. I know it is concrete yet but that looks like it is that once in a life time trip. I have never been to Ayres Rock & hope it does go that there.
    15 Dec 2014
    Justin (Jusso)
The trip is scheduled for 13 days/12 nights and, based on Grant's schedule (used as the map stopovers) we would need at least 15 nights by the time we allow 1 day to get there, 1 day at Uluru and Olgas and 1 day back. We too have never been to Uluru and would be happy to go there but are happy to go with the consensus.
I think it is going to be a matter of figuring out what else we want to see on the way to Oodnadatta. It is about 700km each way from Oodnadatta to Uluru so it would still be a fair hike to add that on. I have a feeling we are going to build up a fair list of places to go along the way.

    Matthew (discomatt)
convinced Liza that this would be a great trip and to take some long service, the only decision now is do we bring the camper and extend our trip by a extra week or 2 while in the outback or just tent it, any thoughts on route and how long at Dalhousie yet? wouldn't mind catching up to sort out some definite plans as we might make it a 4 week holiday
    26 Jan 2015
    Trip Leader Jase (Jase69er)
Hey Matt, camper trailer for sure. If your looking to do 4 weeks the you could head from Dalhousie to Ayes Rock and even the Finke Gorge which looks really beautiful. I'll have a proposed route up soon, been flat out organising the Easter trip. Once I post up the route then happy to do a 'get to gether'.
    27 Jan 2015
    Matthew (discomatt)
sounds good, at this stage we might be heading toward the outback a couple of weeks before this trip then meet up along the way, need to speak to a few others and then make some definite plans, once I done that depending on what pans out I might post a trip pre trip, I really want to spend about 4 weeks out in the desert.

Matt, just a suggestion, but head up earlier prior to school hollies & meet the group somewhere along the trek, or at Dalhousie. I would head up at least 2 weeks prior, spend a few days in the Flinders Ranges, possibly even head to 'the rock', then make your way across to Dalhousie & head back to Melb with Jase & the rest of the crew.

    Trip Leader Jase (Jase69er)
Hey all, almost have the itinerary completed and ready to publish for you all to view. I'm thinking of hosting a get together at my house for all those planing on making this trip to make sure everyone is ok with the itinerary and to meet each other (just an excuse to have pre trip drinks). Thinking around June if that's ok with everyone.
    15 Mar 2015
    Matthew (discomatt)
Top work Jase, Liza and I have decided to make it a longer trip as Liza has to take at least 4 weeks long service, at this stage we are thinking 1 week around wyperfield and big desert then about a week around flinders rangers then catch up with the rest of the group.
Once you have final plans we will finalize our plans then I will post up our bits in a separate trip and see if anyone wants to join us.
Looking forward to seeing your plans and catching up for a sipper

Jase can you please post up or send me a pm with rough thoughts on the trip so far, don't need definite plans just a idea of when you will reach Leigh Creek or Maaree , at this stage we are thinking of catching up with the group in either place so I would assume 2 days into your trip and start the real touring trip from there

Is anyone else towing a camper on this trip and does anyone else use LPG?? Or am I the only sucker do this trip with a gas guzzling V8 and towing? Yes I do have a large fuel budget...
    30 Apr 2015
    Mien and Jack (DutchDuo)
Jase, just checking if you expect us on the Saturday as it will be 23rd of May not 24th....
    01 May 2015
    Matthew (discomatt)
Freya, I have done a bit of ground work regarding LPG and fuel. Last LPG supply is Leigh Creek if they have any!! Have seen reports on other forums of people getting there and they have run out or the pump doesn't work. From there it will be roughly 1000km before coober peddy where the next lot of LPG is available. Petrol is available about every 200km but at a price, I am budgeting about $2.50 / L.
I have 58L LPG and 87L petrol and will more than likely fit a sill tank that I have in the shed which will give me another 55L so I will have a range of roughly 1000km towing on the black top and 700 if the going gets tough ie soft sand or slippery mud

One thing to remember folks; DO NOT take fresh fruit or vegies as you will lose it all at the Vic/SA border. Last place to get these items at a reasonable price is Renmark where they have a big shopping centre with a Woolworth/Safeway supermarket etc.

    Thanks Matthew,
When last at Leigh Creek the gas was more expensive than petrol ! I couldnt believe it. I have an issue that the main tank is gas and sub tank is petrol so very small I carry jerry cans for fuel. Roughly speaking I allow 200kms for the sub tank (I can push it to 230kms but prefer not to). I think I will be carrying all four jerrys just to be safe! Thanks for the message looking forward to meeting you all and this trip.
    04 May 2015
    Matthew (discomatt)
Wow LPG more than petrol that sux big time!!!

Regardless of cost I will be filling with both as I need all the motion lotion I can get, the disco is a real gas guzzler...

    Jase,
Firstly, thanks for your hospitality on the weekend. It was great to meet everyone who will be going.
Secondly, I know you will be posting the full trip details in a few weeks but by the time I got home, I couldn't remember all of the places we will be staying to be able to update SWMBO. Any chance you could just give me a list of the stopovers. Below is what I could remember but I am a few days short.

Melb > Wakerie > Leigh Creek > Haligans Bay > Somewhere near Oodnadatta > Dalhousie Springs / the other spot Liza mentioned > Coober Pedy > Adelaide > Melb

    Trip Leader Jase (Jase69er)
Hi all, sorry for the late reply, I've had a few issues with my account here and I've been unable to gain access - locked out.

Ok after confirming all the info that we talked about 6 weeks ago I can tell you all that nothing has changed from the original plans. But the only issue I/we have at the moment is accom at Marree. At this stage they wont take our booking for 10 cars as they already have a large booking for 50-60 cars the same night with the Vareity Bash. What ever is left after that will be on a 'first in' basic.
Over the next few nights I will start to post up the itinerary with maps for each day. The info should be fairly complete but if you don't understand something or you fell I've overlooked something please feel free to smack me over the head.

I can also tell you that Poppy G (Gary) will be bringing his 16yr old nephew riding shotgun in his new truck and we have no 'pull out' with the exception of Diana who I'm still unsure of her intentions.

With a little over 2 months left until we leave I hope everyone is getting excited and prepping up. If anyone needs a hand with anything please feel free to contact me, alway willing to help out.

hate to disappoint Jase but unless you plan to just drive between Melbourne and Adelaide 17 times you need to put up some different maps

Do you have Dropbox or similar when you can store them a share a link to the folder perhaps?
    20 Jul 2015
    Trip Leader Jase (Jase69er)
No mate, no Dropbox,,, it just won't upload any other file except for one. If I delete that file and try to upload another file it keeps going back to the original. Really not sure what is going on, I was locked out of my account here for weeks too. If I can't get it sorted out I may have to pull the trip from here and run it as a private trip. If this is the case then I will personally get intouch with everyone via phone and email.

Jase, you can send me the file(s) to my email address so that I can upload them for you if you have trouble uploading them.
Unfortunately ipad may not work well on uploading files occasionally. It's easier to upload them from a computer/laptop. I will send you a PM with my email address.

For ease of planning and so everyone knows who is and who isn't going could everyone (excluding Jase, have talked to him and know where he is at) please confirm attendance to this trip or if in doubt please withdraw your attendance. It is so close now if there are any questions on whether you can come or not need to be finalised.
    Crunch time people....

We are still coming. I really would like to get a hold of the itinerary. We want to plan food, fuel, etc. but need to know where we are stopping as per my message several months ago.
Jase, any chance of getting more details?

Due to a few issues and some politics that I don't want to go into Jase is no longer a member on this forum. HOWEVER this trip is still going ahead. For the time being we can still organise what we can on here if need be and there are also all the details of the trip on facebook. As far as I'm aware Jase has contacted all here that have joined the trip to notify them of the facebook details.
If you are not aware of contact details through facebook please PM me and I will pass them on.
