Simpson Desert MEDIUM / HARD

Simpson Desert, SA

See more trips

We are planning to cross the Simpson Desert via the French and QAA line , west to east.

This will be our first time.

Because we have been to  the Oodnadatta Track and Dalhousie springs our focus will be to cross the Simpson and thus will skip some attractions on our way up to Dalhousie.

We are also a little bit hooked on flying our drone and some time will be spent to do so.

Tackeling the Simpson needs preparation and we are happy to schedule a meet and greet to talk about this.

Intended itnerary will be uploaded in the files section

Hello Mien & Jack, We normally travel alone so we would like to know what you normally do regarding meals. We normally freeze cooked meals and criovac them. We have a Ziggy and an Oz Pig. Your post mentions creek crossings, any idea how deep please? We have a facebook page (Lets Go Discover Aus) of our travels and also have a drone. Thanks Stu & Kaz

Hi Stuart& Kaz,
If you post a trip on this site and choose a difficulty rating it automatically gives a brief description about what to expect e.g water crossings or steep tracks. We choose rating medium to hard and the site gives a brief description. We don't expect any water crossings:)
Regarding meals, we hope to make camp around 4-5 pm and then either cook, BBQ or heat up stuff

Sorry guys we have to withdraw from this trip as we have a Blue Heeler. We live in our van fulltime and our dog goes everywhere with us. No dogs are allowed in the Simpson. :(

Hi Mien and Jack,

I am contemplating about joining you guys. However I only recently got the Patrol and not sure what I'll require setup wise to make this trip. I know the Navara with the canopy, 80 liter under tray water tank and everything else was up to the task. However Patrol isn't quite there yet. Capability wise I don't think the patrol would have an issue, I also spent thousands on it on preventative maintenance with new cooling system(thermo, water pump, radiator, hoses etc... etc...) and a bunch of other stuff so reliability should be OK - however setup wise I'm not sure what I'd require as 2 weeks away in the middle of nowhere sounds amazing, but also scary haha. I have drawers, fridge, dual battery and limited space in the wagon.

Thanks

EDIT: Also fuel wise I have 90L main and 30 sub. Assuming 20L/100km in low range, that's 600 km. Would that be enough or do I need jerrys etc?

I am actually leaving on Sunday morning for a 10 day snow adventure with my finance - We will try to attend if everything is packed and ready to go for Sunday, but we are keen so will try our best to make it with the Patrol so we can discuss any requirements. Also if we decide we want to come, will need to find furbaby sitters for 2 weeks.. i'm guessing dogs aren't allowed on this trip?

Thanks.

Hi Mien and Jack,
My vehicle doesn't have a winch fitted .... i carry snatch strap recovery gear and max tracks when beach driving, plus i have over 20 years of sand 4WD experience ... i'm wondering if you're ok with me joining your group considering this limitation with my Hilux 4WD ?

Hi Adrian,
Of course you can join without a winch!
It is an automated setting in requirements when you rate the trip on this site, don’t worry about it. Is our itnerary not a long way for you to join a West to east crossing?

Yes, for me (coming from Brisbane) it's a long trip just to start the west to east crossing, but i've always wanted to explore the top of SA anyway. Now knowing that it's ok for me to join in your group's Simpson crossing without a winch, i will work out my own itinerary before meeting your group and how much time i need off work for the whole journey ... maybe 3 to 4 weeks !
I will keep in touch.

Hi Mien and Jack
I’m really interested in this trip but also my vehicle (Diesel 120 series Prado) doesn't have a winch – I didn’t realise it was an automated response & thought you set it as a requirement. I carry a hand winch, straps, chain, Max Trax, Tyre straps – I also have a sand anchor if needed. I’m 7-8 years 4wd experience (plus trail bike riding) mainly Victoria High Country (6-7 trips Wonangatta, Licola, Dargo etc and some sand driving in Big Desert and Murray Sunset Parks (both Vic). Would you be ok with me joining your group? Thanks Rohan 0407536020

Hi All
“Simpson Desert Ed2” free map on “offroad escape” (free App) has a lot of detail and contains trip planning notes. There are other maps (also no charge) for the areas we are going e.g. Oodnadatta and Dalhousie maps

Hi Mien and Jack,
I regret to tell you that i've made a decision and i won't be able to join your trip across the Simpson in two weeks time.
I just can't get enough time during the week to prepare (due to my business). Being single, it's up to myself to get everything sorted and i know that time will be against me.
For me, it's quite disappointing ... i should have made inquiries a month earlier ... i'm not fully set up for desert trips.
Anyhow, i hope you all have a fantastic time and a safe trip .... the Simpson desert crossing is still on my bucket list. Thanks for keeping in touch.
I will plan to do this trip definitely next year, either by myself or with a group.
Best regards, Adrian R.
