Border Track + Big Desert (Sand Driving+Sand Dunes) EASY / MEDIUM

Border Track, Big Desert, VIC

See more trips

Border track from top to Red Bluff (1 day driving), then veer into Big Desert for another day of offroading and from there we will have a couple of options. Either play around on some sand and some dunes and camp in Big Billy Bore, or mission it to snowdrift camp ground which is a good camp spot but is a bit far due to lack of linking tracks according to maps. If we make it to snowdrift it will be around 300kms in total of offroading for both days.

Day 1 - Drive up to Pine Soak Hut Campground $12 Camping Fee booking required + SA Park Entry Permit ($10) - 6.5 hrs drive approx

Day 2 - Border Track to Red Bluff - SA Park vehicle entry permit same as day 1 - Camp at Red Bluff free camping

Day 3 - Big Desert day, find some tracks and some dunes. Camp in Big Billy Bore or Snowdrift - Free Camping

Day 4 - Drive back to Melbourne - 5.5 hrs drive approx.

Border track is in the Ngarkat Conservation Park which has a $10 ($8 concession) per vehicle entry fee. Booking is mandatory -

https://www.environment.sa.gov.au/parks/find-a-park/Browse_by_region/Murray_River/ngarkat-conservation-park/booking/vehicle-entry-fees

Friday night we will camp at Pine Soak Hut Campground ($12 per night) - Booking Requiredhttps://www.environment.sa.gov.au/parks/booking/details#/accom/73211

This place is relatively remote once you are in the desert, so please be prepared. The tracks will be normally very easy driving, the sand in most places is quite compact and some places it's wavy (not corrugated) but it's quite fun area especially giving a red hot go at some of the dunes for a play. Also Border track is one of those iconic tracks that you must do at least once.

Looking at average temperatures and weather in the past around this area, looks like end of September, beginning of October is best as days average 20 to 25 degrees, which is the kind of weather you want to enjoy this environment. Also Daylight savings will enable us to enjoy the days longer. At night it also gets quite cold so be prepared.

Please note that starting point is 6.5 hours drive from Melbourne and where we ending from is rougly over 5 hours drive to Melbourne. So you will need the full 4 days for this trip. You cannot come Saturday and leave Sunday (unless you live in Mildura or close by)

Hey guys, feel free to invite your mates. It's still a while away, but good to see who might be on-board etc.
    12 Jul 2018
    Eli (Triton Noob)
I will invite christo as he seemed keen. Any chance that the date will be brought forward as October is agessssss away.

I invited Christo already through FB.

I looked into putting date forward but there's a couple things
    - Day light savings will let us enjoy the days more, since it's a long drive away I want to get good days full of driving and playing on the dunes
    - Temperature will be perfect in October hopefully low to mid 20's
    - Less chances of rain, makes it more fun in soft sand and whole trip better.

It's a fair effort (12 hrs driving just to get there and then back home), heaps of fuel money to be spent and I want to make sure we enjoy it. I went in the rain back in September 2016, and it wasn't that enjoyable as when I went back in March 2017 with decent weather. And July / August I want to enjoy the snow while it lasts :D

Added another 2 spots. Unfortunately group can't be too big as the first night campsite requires booking in advance and it only accommodates for 12 vehicles.

I am unable to find any good free camp spots around that area for the first night. If anyone knows of some good location, let me know. Otherwise Pine Hut Soak is $12 per night. The second and third night camping is free.

    Yeah mate,
It's very early still but I'll be booking leave next month for these dates. Looks like best dates to me with weather and longer days.

Also we'll need to book Campsite etc.

Do you guys have any other friends you'd like to join? or 8 cars sounds enough?

8 vehicles is plenty, but 10 is possible. Just know that the more vehicles, the slower the convoy will go.. but also the more fun it could be with the right people and the right attitude.

It's still a while away so we can easily book out the campsite for Friday night (which only accommodates 12 cars), and the other camp sites are large enough to accommodate plenty of cars. Let me know your suggestions. I explored a huge percentage of this desert so I am not too fussed if we cover less ground and have a bigger group.. as long as we have a good time between mates.

Just reading the pine hut camp thingy and it says this

"Site booking: Your booking is only for the site specified on your permit. Please ensure you carefully check your site number before setting up camp as you may be requested to move if you occupy the incorrect site. "

I've never booked campsites or even done any longer trips like this before so please correct me if I'm wrong, but does everyone just set up wherever they want? If we all good separately how can we all camp together?
    25 Jul 2018
Trip Leader Thurstain (Tcm9669) Premium Member
That's a general statement in their terms and conditions In pine hut there is no numbered sites, read their first sentence in the camp description

    Description:
Unallocated Campground (sites not numbered). Vehicles must be booked individually

So you just find a spot and set up. Also its not a huge camp grounds, allowing only 12 cars and it's relatively small camp so we will camp together no matter what since we will pretty much take up the whole site lol.

Also, don't forget the parks pass which is $10. It's a once off entry fee which will suffice for Friday and Saturday.

Q : For this trip we need sand flags???
    23 Aug 2018
Trip Leader Thurstain (Tcm9669) Premium Member
When I did it, we didn't use sand flags as the dunes in border track are ONE Way (north to south only) and in big desert most of the dunes are off tracks.

If I remember I'll bring mine just in case, but it's not required.

Mapping out all the tracks that I'm hoping to do (this being the long way to the nice campsite for the last day).. And getting an estimate of kilometers.

Keeping in mind this will be soft sand (mostly), low range driving for about 90% of the time.. How does everyone feel about their tanks doing a solid 400kms (it's less.. but I'd like to think worst case) drive of this? Then another 75kms of 2wd to the next fuel station?

We will have a few options if we are running low on fuel on Sunday...

    1. We can detour 50kms each way (100kms total) and refuel - and go to our ultimate destination (200kms mostly offroad LOOOONG DAY)
    2. We can cut the crap and head to camp quickly via the main road doing minimal offroad driving on the Sunday
    3. Stay at Big Billy Bore Campground and just have a play there and hit a few dunes. Camp early and rest up for the long Monday drive

I personally think the Patrol should be OK with 120L of diesel using absolute worst case 25L/100 (which it won't) still gives me 480 kms till empty. But might get a spare jerry just in case as I'm paranoid lol.

Yes I think so, I read somewhere in SA , if they see a chainsaw , they cónfîscäte it
This is from the National Parks and Wildlife (National Parks)Regulations 2016 for SA

    16—Possession and use of chainsaws
    (1) Subject to subregulation (2), a person must not, without the permission of the relevant
authority, have control of, carry or use a chainsaw in a reserve.
    (2) A person may have control of, carry or use a chainsaw in a reserve—
    (a) in the course of exercising rights or performing obligations pursuant to a
lease, licence or agreement entered into by the Minister or the relevant
authority in relation to the reserve; or
    (b) in the course of exercising powers or performing obligations under an Act or

So will the last word “emergency” be an excuse that ai have one in the car - but only for emergencies?
    Hi Steph,

Thanks for checking first. Under the SA National Parks & Wildlife Regulations, it is prohibited to bring a chainsaw into a national park or reserve (even if it is just being stored in your vehicle). Thanks Chris

    Sorry Luke,
Trip is overbooked already as it is. I am keen on going the full distance to the nicer camp spot on Sunday and convoy is already huge as it is. Initial plan was 6 cars.

Please everyone be prepared as much as you can. DO service your cars before this trip as it's going to be a fair bit kms. Check everything over and fix any issues you might have. We will be a long way from anywhere. Probably the next decent town would be Mildura.. most other towns around the desert are just 2 streets long and 2 streets wide.. and probably the local bakery closes 1PM and the local mechanic retired 20 years ago. So be prepared. I'm also bringing tools and a few spares.

Keen to see you all again. Should be an awesome trip with good mates. Weather is already warming up just like I was hoping... this trip should be epic if the weather is right.
    27 Sep 2018
    Robbie (9580series)
by its very nature an "emergency" is unforeseen and unplanned..
so by definition to carry one for that purpose shouldn't be illegal.
    I'm not traveling without one.
    28 Sep 2018
Trip Leader Thurstain (Tcm9669) Premium Member
I don't get this stupid chainsaw thing. Most of the time we help clearing the tracks! Last time we cleared a massive tree blocking a track that would have been tricky to turn around on. Plus we opened it for emergency vehicles also! Why would they not want people to do this?

Where we're going, only Friday night and Saturday day were gonna be in SA. Once we reach Saturday camp we will be in Victoria technically.. Although from memory, there aren't many trees around to cut anyway 😂 mostly shrubs.

    Hi guys,
I am keen for this trip. One week and one day to go!! Hopefully everyone is as keen as I am and well prepared.

Also please stop sharing the invite link! Originally it was supposed to be 6 cars haha. It's now at 10. I'm happy to lead a big trip but I think now we're at the limit. So please stop sharing invite links.

Cya all at the meeting point.

Damn so many cars now. Omg.

If everyone brings some firewood were gonna have a Bon fire lol.

Also I'm thinking there's so many cars, instead of trying to to mission it to the far camp spot on Sunday, we might camp somewhere in big desert and just go do tracks around and there's a few "playgrounds" with fun sand dunes and good lookouts and we just go and have fun for a day. Play like big kids with our big boy toys haha.

    EVERYONE PLEASE READ CAREFULLY
Due to the massive number of vehicles, I have made a few amendments to the plan. I want this to be an awesome adventure and to ensure this, the below changes have been made:

    1. We will no longer try to mission it to the far away (200kms) camp site. It'll be a stressful day to make it there plus the camp site is a popular spot and not overly big, so we might not find a good spot for us to setup comfortably.. also we will miss on heaps of fun at the dunes as we will be rushing all day. Instead Sunday will be a fun day driving random tracks, visiting some dunes and lookouts. Bring your recovery gear, as chances are someone will get stuck having too much fun up the soft sand.

    2. Sunday we might camp at a campsite with drop toilets or we might bush camp. Depending on the situation at Big Billy Bore Campsite. There are a few not very frequented campsites around and we might make the decision to camp in a bush camp to have a good space just for us to be loud as fuck, drink and be happy.. without bothering anyone else. So please be prepared with adequate equipment and bush etiquette to take a dump behind a bush if you so need to. This is open for discussion.

Bring on your happy faces. Might as well make this an epic adventure between good mates. We are going to be far away from everything, please be self sufficient, bring enough fuel, water and food. Also, it's such a big group I will need everyone to please cooperate and be responsible. This will determine if trip is an epic adventure between awesome mates or a disaster and everyone goes home upset. If issues arise, decisions will have to be made. I led a few trips before and never had any issues, so let's keep it this way :)

See you all at the meeting point. ONE WEEK TO GO!

You kind of tend to hate a car when you keep fixing it on the tracks 😂

ONE Week Today and we will be on our way :) We'll be half way to Bendigo around this time :D - Yes sorry I'm super excited.

Please make sure that you bring the below if you can
    1. Firewood - There is VERY LIMITED firewood to collect there.. unless a park ranger stocks the camp site
    2. Enough water, food and grog for a good time
    3. Enough fuel as servos will be limited
    4. Your car in GOOD MECHANICAL condition as much as possible and CHECKED
    5. PRINT the Parks Pass and Campsite Permit
    6. Adequate clothes. Light clothes for during the day (it should be mid to high 20's) and Warm clothes for the night (sub 10 most likely)

And special note to Faris, bring EXTRA sleeping bags to keep warm if your roof top tent gets wet with condensation! Don't want you to not manage to sleep like the Grampians mate. That was horrible.

Yes I'll try bring my sand flag. Although on border track the dunes bit is ONE WAY so we shouldn't have any head ons.. In big Desert most tracks are flat except some playgrounds with the dunes etc and some off track dunes.

Does anyone have a sand flag that I could borrow? or should i not bother with one?
    08 Oct 2018
Trip Leader Thurstain (Tcm9669) Premium Member
Don't bother. You don't need one. I'll probably take mine off as there's low trees in some places and probably endup destroying the flag.

It's really not required, all dunes are one way on border track and the rest is flat ground.

    Hey guys,
Something to remember when packing up your car.. NO FRESH FRUIT AND VEGETABLE is allowed to go into the Murray region or cross the SA border. This is a fruit fly free zone. If you need fresh fruit and vegetable we will buy them tomorrow before camp.

Please don't bring any fresh fruit or vegetables, if you get caught it's MASSIVE fines.
