Sunday

  1. To be discussed. Some may stay in Walhalla for their own tour.

Weekend trip to Walhalla area to explore the amazing area. Walhalla is an old gold mine town with a lot of amazing history. The trip will be suitable for 4wders who are new to 4wding. There will be creek crossing, steep decent and ascent, and couple rocky sections. There are couple of campsites we can stay for the night. There will be drop toliets and plenty of firewood.

You will need to be self-sufficient. We will fill up at Moe, and there will be around 70-100km offroad. You should not need jerry can but always good to bring if you are concern about your fuel consumption. Bring your own recovery gear and check your winch (if you have one) to make sure it's in working condition. It's unlikely that you will need a winch on this trip but be prepared for anything.

I will have a quick briefing before the trip to ensure you understand the basic of 4wding.

It will be an early start to get the most out of the day. Meeting at 7am in Moe.

Hi all looking forward to 4wding with you all. Now is time to prep your car and make sure it is in top condition. Although Walhalla is not too remote, it is still an area which RACV can't reach easily. The plan is to check out some easy tracks in the area and couple creek crossing. There will be plenty of time to take pictures and chill. Since Nav is new to 4wding I will take it easy to guide him in his brand new 200 series. Also if you coild bring a chainsaw it would be great. I will bring mine as well. Lets have a fun time. There could be scattered rain on Sat but it should be fine.
I will check in again closer to the date. Have a good one.

I'm hoping I find some time this week to seal the snorkel on the Patrol.

How deep are the creeks?

As for RACV, I hope I won't need them after spending $3k repairs on the Patrol, it should be top shape. Winch works, brand new cooling system with water pump and hoses brand new, took it for a few test drives and all looks well... But it's a relatively new car for me but hopefully I ironed out most issues for a hassle free adventure!

Been nearly 2 years since I camped in the VHC, so I'm quite excited.

Most of the creek is around hub depth (30-40 cm), but again all creek crossing will be depending on how much rain it has received. I will cross them first so you know how deep they are. That's good, it's best to replace them before they go wrong in the bush (preventive maintenance).

Hi Thurstain, I am a new member here and going on this trip. Just wondering what do you mean by "seal the snorkel". I am also getting snorkel fix on my Landcruiser petrol version by ARB Brighton, just want to know if I need to get something else to seal the snorkel?

Many thx, Nav

The snorkel is usually in 3 pieces joint by silicone hoses. Although that should be water tight just to be safe I like to put sikaflex around all the joints. If you keep moving in water, it should not get in but if you get stuck and it's not sealed with sikaflex or something similar it might suck in water.

If your getting yours fitted professionally, it should be sealed. However I would ask and make sure that they do, that way you know that it's safe.. Not assume your safe then you endup hydrolocking your engine in the middle of some river. However I'd expect ARB to do it correctly.

I'm just checking mine as it's a Nissan factory snorkel, and Nissan usually doesn't seal them as they aren't meant to be waterproof but as far as Nissan is concerned it's to suck in fresh air from up high... So no guarantee it'll be sealed. However looked at mine and there was some sealant but looks old and brittle, so worth me resealing it. It's a new car to me and I like to know and check everything as you can't trust the previous owner did the right thing.

Good, spewin' I wasnt quick enough to jag a spot.
Wallhalla is good albeit cold at this time of year.
Just reading the thread I heard Nissan snorlels leak from behind the Nissan badge on the base of the snorkel as they are only rivited on with no sealant, so might be worth sikaflexing it on. Although in over 30 years of 4wding I've never drowned a 4x4 (all without a snorkel) from Tassie to Cape York yet. Been worried a few times when water lapped the base of the windscreen and spurts up the gearlever boot though !

Yeah that's what I read too but upon further digging... It's mostly bullshit as the hole of the rivet is just big enough for the rivet and the rivet will fill the hole.. So it should not leak.. Plus that's like water over the bonnet height....

Just spent few hours at Walhalla, nice little town! Hope to see you all again soon, had a couple first timers which travelled really well on the tracks and the stock 200 series impressed us all!!

Also nav, if your interested in the Grampians trip, have a look here... If the days work out for you, join up!
