Anzac day trip at Tallarook State Forest MEDIUM

Tallarook State Forest, VIC

See more trips

Hi all,

I am a moderately experienced driver taking a friend who is a beginner out for another spin at Tallarook State Forest

We don't have bullbar winches but I have maxtrax, a hand winch and an exhaust jack, as well as snatch straps, tree trunk protector.

Both are mitsubishi challengers

Meet at Freemans Camp and Picnic Area https://goo.gl/maps/q86LPk87gRu

If anyone has a handheld CB for my mate he can borrow for the day that would be great!

Who's in?

Dave.

Hey Alisha and Thurstain, welcome and thanks for joining.

Have you been to this area before? I have a few months back just to get an idea of the area. I'm new to 4WD in Victoria. Started my 4WD life in QLD

Hi Dave,
I only expressed interest in the trip as I'm not 100% if I can make it yet. If I can come I'll join the trip.

I never been there yet, been saying I have to visit someday since last year but never managed to make it on a trip.

If tomorrow's plan clear up, I'll join you guys.

HAHA Actually I was at Cobaw doing tracks, not Tallarook! Tracks around Muirs track.

I'm happy to go back to Cobaw tracks or try Tallarook tracks. For now meeting point is still Freemans Camp and Picnic Area

UHF channel 10

that's cool - even if we are all new to the area we can just explore and hopefully find tracks best suited to our abilities - Goldilocks tracks. not to hard, not too easy, just right! :-)

Hey Dave we are interested in this trip but don't want to tackle hard tracks. We have a 6 month old that has been to a few trips. Preferably wide tracks To avoid damage to the car.would you recommend this for us?

Cheers

That area is insane on same tracks haha. There are a few easy ones such as Smiths and Mansfield but some like Alcorns etc are INSANE

if you don't want damage and nuts tracks stay away from Phone Track and Steep Track. If you want a look to see what they are like walk down Phone track a few 100m or up steep track a few 100. I wouldn't even consider either without a winch

G'day Dave, great stuff posting your first trip and having it fill so quickly.

I know Tallarook pretty well and have run several trips from beginner to very difficult.

Here's a list of some good ones that aren't too hard.

(Assumption all vehicles have selectable low range, 4wds not SUVs)
Jenkins #1, #2 and Jenkins Link. Steep with some rocky sections but a stock vehicle will drive them.

Dicks and Stony Creek Tracks. As above.

Tehans 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. All great fun, especially coming up 5. Steep in sections and can be slippery and rutted. Ideally suited to decent AT tyres or better but road rubber can do it. No probs if dry.

Horans, Brandy Corner, Brandy and Corner. Easy.

Cable Track can have a nasty bog section.

Rocky and Mountain Tracks. Challenging for stock vehicles but with spotting and good line selection they are doable. As suggested they are quite rocky and a bit steep.

Gravel Pit, Magazine and Caddell - some steep, rocky and potentially slippery sections but not hard. Good fun.

West Falls Rd - right up the north near the reservoir is steep and slippery clay when wet. Good fun though. Falls Creek Track is a tight and somewhat challenging little track that is fun as well.

Avoid Bills Track. Bog hole nightmare.

Don't touch Steep, Phone, Willies, Red Hill and unnamed/unmarked tracks off the top of Jenkins #1 & Tehans #2. They are particularly nasty tracks.

If you run into any trouble out there send me a message, I'm only half an hour away and can drive out and lend a hand.
