Australia Day in Wombat SF MEDIUM / HARD

Wombat state forest, VIC

See more trips

Planning a day in the bush to celebrate this country’s great outdoors.

This is NOT a bog hole trip. I won’t be drowning cars in mud and water so if you want that, DO NOT JOIN this trip.

Hill climbs, descents are the aim for the day.

Bring food for lunch. I’ll have a bbq on board to cook up anything for a bbq.

Some of the tracks I want to do are

- Nuggety

- Ratcliffe

-Amblers lane

-Blue gum

and there is another one which I’m desperate to try again but I can’t remember it’s name.

Please note that as this area has an extreme fire risk if is warm in the lead up, I will also cancel it, if I deem it unsafe to proceed.

Please be prompt at the meet up point.

Gday Warren.
Thanks mate, I appreciate the input. If you have any further recommendations, by all means, put them forward.
Looking forward to the trip already.

Hi, behind the large wombat steel artwork as you come into Blackwood are a couple of nice tracks, one rocky steep climb thru a gully then follows the ridge and exits onto greenhills rd. Behind the dales creek area are a few, around charcoal tk way, some are unnamed, all easy/med. Good place to explore.

Could we have a show of hands for those who are still keen to go ahead even though it’s going to be 37 degrees?
Cheers

I'm still keen, but completely understand reservations about going wheeling in that heat. There may be issues with cars operating in that heat, there's fire danger and it might just be uncomfortable. Happy to follow the consensus of others. Could even meet at sparrows to do it before the heat gets nasty.

Obviously my first priority is the safety of all coming, and I have reservations about the area and the conditions on such a hot day.
An early start could be the best option, and perhaps wind it up at midday.
Would that suit everyone? Possibly a 6:30am meet up?

I don't mind an early start. Let's see what the others say.

Oh Tom you know I wake up at 7am :)
The area we go to does have inherent fire dangers but all forests do. I would be more concerned about the 500 other ppl in the park. It will be a busy day.
You might have to get some shut eye a bit earlier Steven!
But you are right, it will be busy, but i think if we are on the tracks at 7am, we should have at least 4-5 hours of decent driving before the heat starts to take effect.
Im going to change the meet up time to 6.30am. I hope we can all still make it.
Cheers

I would suggest you install the VicEmergency app on your phone and setup a watch zone in Wombat so it alerts you if there is any fires around you (10km radius I think) and in your watch zone, so while your driving even if you get a bit of reception it will update and let you know.. if there is a fire around a track your planning to go to - you know to skip it or get out of there.
