Beginners Trip.

if you are new to the 4wding sene & you would like to gain some tips from the old stages, then you are welcome to join.

each group (if more than one?) will have a lead vehicle with an experienced driver and a tail end Charlie who will also be experienced. You will get advice on track ediquite, wheel placement, safety tips, use of a spotter, vehicle recovery, convoy procedures tyre pressures etc.

Meet at Glenburn Servo at 8.30 am for a 9am briefing & 9.15 departure. We'll stop for lunch at about 1pm at Luke's Creek Rd. Camp Ground so have your own food & drinks & banter on the ready.

we'll then hit the tracks again with full bellies & finish back at the Glenburn Servo at about 4.30. I will have some fun awards to give out at the end of the trip so make sure you head back to the Servo.

i will ring the Servo closer to the date (when numbers are finalised) to let them know that we are coming. They have burgers, bacon & egg rolls etc forbreaky in the morning........oh, we meet in the car park at the rear of the Servo.

For those of you who want to spread the weekend out a little longer, I will be heading up Friday night to camp at Luke's Creek Rd Campground. I will also camp on the Saturday night for a drive on some more challenging tracks on Sunday before heading home. You are welcome to join me.

I'll more than likely need experienced people to help out by leading groups & tail end Charlie's. I'd like to keep the groups to 10 vehicles or less

The tracks that we will be driving are reasonably easy however, I'm sure that Toolangi will throw up the odd challenge. Your vehicle should have A/T's or M/T's & bring any recovery gear that you have. If you're brand new, no worries as the more experienced among us will have all the gear including winches. Nobody will be left stranded on the tracks.

Bring the whole family along to join in the fun. My two boys will be with me.

See you there!

Hi all. Welcome aboard Rob (robbo1312), Dale (colli)..... Good luck on your wedding mate, yeh prolly should turn up to that mate, Andy (andyh) & Mary (daisyDukes76). I look forward to meeting you all.

Mary, if you have no recovery gear you'll be ok because as I said in my trip post, there'll be experienced people on board with all the gear & we all know this is a beginners trip so we expect this to happen. This is the trip for newbies to learn stuff.

I recommend you get a UHF as communication between vehicles is extremely important. If $'s is an issue, go buy yourself a decent handheld UHF. You should be able to find one for under $100? No snorkel will be fine on this trip. Also by a tyre gauge as you will be airing your tyres down. Bring a shovel & make sure that you have rated recovery points on your vehicle & learn where they are....very important.

      You'll have a ball.

I think as far as telling people not to worry about recovery gear, it's probably not the best idea.
I think anyone coming on this trip has more than enough time to get themselves at least a handheld UHF, a snatch strap and some shackles as a minimum.

Hi Mary. This trip is for beginners. Sounds like that you are a beginner therefore I reason that this trip is for you. The more experienced among us will show you the basics including you other gear shifter (the awesome one). We will be very patient with our newbies because we were all in the same boat once. After this trip you may want to join a club & do a course or simply gain experience from finding new mates through this forum & going on trips that suit your ability. I believe that one of the gentlemen showing an interest in this trip is a professional instructed.

      Hi Mary,
Just about any 4x4 outlet will have the, you can also try places like JB HiFi, and there are heaps of places on line too, I got mine here http://www.prestigecom.net.au/ I reckon they are reasonably priced and have a large range, also have some start packages which include the antenna. Make sure you get the 80 channel versions. Obviously the in car types will need installation, but its not that difficult to do. however if that's a problem, you could always get a hand held model, they are generally a little cheaper too. Alot of people end up with both, as its a good idea to have a hand held if you are spotting wheel placement for someone communication is a lot easier with a radio. - hope this helps. If you need more info just ask hey
      15 Sep 2014
      Trip Leader David (Paul Patrol)
      Hi Mary,
I wasn't sure which brand/type of UHF I wanted for my patrol for a long time as I didn't want anything that cluttered the inside of my car (I bought my patrol as stock & slowly built it up over time as to how I want/need it to my needs). So for about two years I just used a hand held UHF which I bought from Anaconda for $90. Two came in the pack. Mine have a 5 km range which actually don't have more than about 1 km range when used in hilly terrain. I now have my in dash UHF & also use the handheld at camp or if doing a recovery whilst I am the spotter. I'd get a hand held one for now as it will do the job fine until you decide on your future needs.

Ok, now that there is 15 trucks coming on our little trip, I think that it's time to call for more volunteers. We'll need another trip leader & another TEC please.
15 trucks in one group is just too big. This will result in clogging up the tracks & causing grief to other users of the tracks. To be a trip leader you'll need to either know the area well & or bring a good map of the area. I'd prefer that you have experience in being a trip leader, have patience & common sense. You will be in charge of leading recoveries, convoy order, planing your route etc. as well as having full recovery gear on board, you will also need a chainsaw for track clearing if needed.
To be a TEC you will also be required to have full recovery gear, comprehensive tool box (you're in charge of assisting with breakdowns) understand convoy procedures & relay any delays forward to the trip leader.
Both of these jobs are very rewarding.
If the group grows to 25 plus we'll need more assistance again.
Please in box me if you would like to help ASAP as there is only 2 weeks to go.

HI Dave, if needed I can come for the day to assist in leading or tec, have been to toolangi heaps of times and know the area reasonably well and have roof tops of the area. I have never been a trip leader as such but know the ropes....

1 thing that I would recommend though is that ALL vehicles have rated recovery points as the factory tie downs are NOT safe to recover from. Having said that a rear tow bar is all that is needed as a minimum as I am sure there will be a couple of removable tow hitch recovery points in the group ( a tow ball should NEVER be used to recover a stuck 4by!!!!!!!!!!!)

Anyway let me know if you need a hand
      28 Sep 2014
      Trip Leader David (Paul Patrol)
Well only 5 more sleeps for those of us coming up to camp on the Friday & only 6 more for those coming up just for the day. Thank you to everyone who has put their hand up to help. Greatly appreciated. At this stage I think that we'll stick to one group but will practice common curtesy to others that we see on the tracks if we hold them up. Domenic was first to inbox me in regards to being TEC therefore mate, you've got the job if you still want it. I personally haven't been out to Toolangi for quiet some time (over a year) so getting lost & then finding our way again is going to be half the fun. If you come up for the trip on Saturday Discomatt, I'm more than happy to have you up the front to give me a hand if you like. I have a trip planned which starts off easy & builds up as we grow in confidence. All of the tracks chosen I have driven up in a stock Pajero, all though that was a loooong time ago lol. Again, keep in mind this trip is for beginners so please don't stress that you think the driving will be too difficult. It won't. We are not out here to scare anyone.

The trophies are made & the tracks are planned. The weather looks like it's going to be awesome. Bring on the weekend!

      HI Dave,
More that happy to by your TEC, also happy to share the role during the day too. Looks like you have quite a few experienced drivers coming along so it might be a good idea to set up the convoy with an experienced driver in front of and behind a not so experienced one - I sure you have already thought of that. Anyway looking forward to the trip and meeting every one.

Hi all, firstly thanks once again Dave for organising the trip and for the report - it was indeed a pleasure to meet you and your boys. Also, great to catch up with a group of friendly 4x4 enthusiasts. This was my first trip in real mud and found it challenging in part but great fun. Thank you Dom for your encouragement - it was great knowing you were just behind with the odd wise word when needed. Also, thank you Michael for dragging me out of the mud more than once - might have one of your shackles so check and let me know as I think I came home with an extra one! Wife was impressed how many times the troopy got a mention in the report - I had to explain it was for all the wrong reasons. She also saw the photo of the lean - doubt she will ever get in the troopy again!! Hope to catch up on future trips. Regards all, and once again thank you for an enjoyable day.
