Wombat Sunday Run 2.0 MEDIUM

Wombat State Forest, VIC

Planning another trip up Wombat / Lerderderg way. Will start with some hill climbs, continue with some mud and finish with deep ruts, creek crossing and hopefully finding some tracks I never explored before. Trip will begin East and end West if all goes to plan.

Recommended Setup
  • 32 inch muddies or aggressive A/T (nothing less and no HT)
  • 2 inch lift or you will do more damage than you should.. and might bottom out on some places
  • WORKING WINCH is a Must just in case.
  • Front and Rear recovery points
  • Extensive Recovery Kit in good condition (Snatch strap, extension strap, snatch block, dampener, shackles etc)
  • Snorkel if we find deeper creek towards the end of trip (this will require some hunting and driving some unknown tracks if were up for it on the day and if we are making good time)
I will be following some tracks from previous trips but will veer off into the unknown towards end of trip (if we have enough time to) hoping to find some good spots I saw on youtube. Managed to get generic areas where such things are.. but we need to explore the area HOPING to find them, hence convoy will be a small one as we might need to do a few u-turns etc (mostly towards the end of the trip, depending what time we get into the area).. this will be a bit of a recce one (please be prepared for this, don't want people complaining about this.. we might find some good stuff, we might not)

We will be doing a shallow creek crossing that I did last time, and possibly a deeper gnarlier creek crossing (if we find it towards the end of the trip). Snorkel WILL be required for the deeper crossing.

Wombat is always a good challenge and you should not be disappointed if you love 4wding. I never went back home with a clean car and disappointed. Hoping for it to be a solid day of 4wding. Please note that pin stripes and vehicle damage may occur. Last trip we had a Landcruiser break an axle on one of the obstacle.. so please be prepared as Wombat is unpredictable.

This trip will be a mix of rocky climbs (easy in dry, much harder in wet), mud (most bogs have rutted muddy chicken tracks) - be ready to get your car dirty. If mud is not really your thing, this might not be your kind of trip. I won't be tackling waist deep bog holes - but mud will be thrown around for sure.

Be prepared and read description properly so you won't be disappointed. This trip will have it's challenges and should be good fun - should be fairly ok with good tyres and dry tracks. All goes to plan we will cross the whole wombat / lerderderg east to west through tracks. Vehicle DAMAGE MAY OCCUR - come at your own risk and you are solely responsible for your car.

PS: People who joined my last trip in Winter and Rob's trip a few weeks back - we will be driving mostly a mix of those tracks (some in reverse) with some different tracks in between.. so if you want to come again, you are welcome to but be prepared to drive similar tracks as previously.

Also hoping for dry weather. If it's too wet, trip might be cancelled as all the climbs will become quite hard and I have a 2 week road trip after this so don't want to break my car.

Glad to see so much interest in this trip! Trip was full after a couple hours.

This trip will be roughly 75kms of tracks, mud, hills and dirt roads. It's quite a long trip hence group can't be too big. Not sure if we will make it all the way east to west as planned but we will try our best! Few options to stop for lunch depending how we are doing on time and if it's getting late or we are falling behind I might skip a few tracks as I see fit on the day. I'm hoping we have time to explore at the end but might be a tight squeeze... I like to finish around 4PM to 5PM which gives people enough time to get back home at a decent hour.

Hope to see you all there and if you can't make it please free up the space ASAP to give other people chance to plan and join in.

That's actually quite far from meeting place, and that's roughly where we're going to end our trip.. Might even go through it in search of the "deep creek" unless you guys find it at night haha!! Having said that, it's the only Campsite I can think of that's close to a main rd so easier to drive out in morning..

However there's another one in middle of Carrols track (which we will drive), there's one next to Colbrook reservoir (which we might visit for lunch depending on time) and there's more if you have wiki camp's (although not all of them)

Robbie (9580series)
its closer to the meeting point than Langwarrin lol..
I've got wiki camps but there's not a lot around Bacchus marsh

Alex (AlexPatrol)
There are bush camps all thru wombat, if your going in via carrols lane ( off the bacchus marsh- gisborne rd) , I can point you to a bush camp not far away thats at a mine entrance

If you just want a bush camp, coming in from Carrols Lane (NOT Carrols Track) and going into Firth Rd there are a few clearings just off the main rd that I saw multiple people setup camp there. Even if you go on Google Maps if you go in Satellite view, you will be able to actually see a few clearings / white patches. Won't be a nice campsite - but enough for one night.

Thinking of visiting 2 mines in the middle of the trip (Golden Duke and Easter Monday) - are you guys interested? This might be at the cost of not fully finishing the trip and exploring for the deep creek towards the end.

Let me know guys.

G'day Thurstain, happy either way although if deep creek is an actual water crossing that would be good to do.

Hi guys, sounds good I'll plan it that way. Although keep in mind that we can't actually go in them. One of them is enclosed in a cage (I been to this one) and the other one (apparently, never been) is behind a fence although I saw pictures of the inside of it.. so idk if people jump the fence or if there is a way in / around. We can go and just have a look see what the situation is - lots of people try keep these locations a secret so hard to know the hard truth without finding them yourself and going to have a look.

Richard, as for water crossing - about a month ago it was quite deep (I saw videos of it) but not sure how deep it will be in Jan. Having said that, I am not sure if we will even manage to find it.. nobody will fully disclose it's location and it's a "secret".. talked to a guy and we exchanged some "locations" and he gave me a rough location of this crossing but not 100%. If we don't find it this time I will post another trip in Feb/March after my holiday with the aim to find a few hills and the creek crossing in that area.

This trip's aim is to cross Lederberg/Wombat and explore depending on time.

Ok so looks like mine (Easter Monday) IS accessible, the guy who said it's behind a fence misunderstood which mine I was referring to. It has a good opening and is easily accessible. If you are keen to go in bring your own torch / head torch AND of course, you go in at your own risk.. these can be unstable so be aware of that. I'm sure it'll make a good photo opp if you do decide to go in. Bring a hard hat if you have one :)

I'm keen as. Should be a boss trip if all goes to plan.

Sweet I'll be bringing the GoPro as well, been inside Rat Hole mine, all the way to the end, didn't descend though not quite that bold, but still was a lot of fun

Hi Guys,
Just giving you an early warning, as some of you already know, I had a uni joint let go from the drive shaft. I am hoping to get it fixed at the mechanic before this trip - if not I will have to either cancel the trip or I am happy to share my route with someone who will be willing to take the lead.

I'm very sorry for this, but breakdowns happen unfortunately.

Mechanic said won't be able to look at it until tomorrow then they will need to order whatever parts they need and hopefully get it fixed and checked over. If all goes well, I should have it by Friday and the trip will stay on - otherwise I will need a volunteer to lead or cancel trip.

If you'd like to - I can ride shot gun with whoever volunteers as I drove 90% of the tracks we will be driving.

Sorry guys looks like it's gonna be a trip I'll have to lead from the passenger seat of someone else, truck is not going to be fixed on time. Who is willing to have me ride shotgun? I can drive my other car to meeting point at KFC and leave it there, then you'll need to drop me off again at the meeting point after the trip if that's OK.

Thanks.

I've got videos of the first obstacle except the landcruiser, the bog hole rescue, down hill of the mine, inside the mine and the last dry creek crossing haha.

I'm uploading everything on my google drive and will share a link via pm with you all once done (will take a while due to full HD video) or if I get time edit and upload on YouTube.

Was a really good day, I had my doubts if we would complete it but we did plus we did extra XL track and coolbrook reservoir which weren't part of the plan! I drove most tracks in the wet so they were more challenging but in the dry they were much easier.

Too bad the last crossing wasn't flowing, which meant the "deep" crossing I was hoping to explore was probably dry too. Will have to wait till winter and do another trip that area. Last track we did today was insane fun and mud in the wet when I did it last winter.

Also Dennis, fix that car :p it's always breaking in the most important part... Getting into 4wd haha. Hope it is an easy fix mate.

Just finished ordering a new front axle actuator. If only I had a second stick instead of electronics.
I had a good trip thurstain , nuggety was a bit rougher than last time I was there, enjoyed that. Hope I didn't miss much.
Look forward to seeing some pics
