Mount Sunday Road - Extreme Snow Trip HARD

High Country, VIC

See more trips

Planning to drive from Jamieson to Licola via Mount Sunday Road this weekend. There are few videos on youtube to wet your appetite like this one: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrUEoIDXAHI I havn't driven it so I'll be following my nose a little bit.

Take it with a grain of salt BUT according to the BOM, "Snow falling above 500 metres." on Friday!!!!

If your comming, you will need to be fully self sufficient and capable of self recovery, that means a winch in good working order, no ifs, buts or maybes on that one. Preferably your rig has a locker, if not 2. Your person is also well prepared, ie: decent warm clothing, sleeping gear, food for longer than we expect to be gone, etc. Be prepared for an Adventure!
I plan on leaving Melbourne Friday night and camping near Jamieson somewhere, havn't decided exactly where yet. Let me know in the discussion section if your going to join me.

Camp probably above the snow line somewhere on Saturday night. Get to Licola by mid Sunday. Then back home. I need to be back at work on Monday.

I know its a bit soft but you could book a room at the Courthouse Hotel at Jamieson , they are pretty crude but better than camping and it includes a continental breakfast, Dave Hart and I stayed there one night in winter and with a fresh dump of snow over night we where the first to drive Mitchells track in the morning, the best snow drive I have ever done..

Hello Brad , I've done that area à few time in the past and camped on mt Skeen in winter, Have a look @ my photos in my profile, which tracks are you planning on doing ? Some sections are closed and you need permits.
Luca.

Won't be driving across Mt Skene as we don't have a permit for the Jamison Licola Road. But we might head up the Barkly River Jeep track and come back down again. My main goal is to checkout this Mt Sunday Road which has a turn off up to Mt Sunday it's self. My Rooftops maps show the track as the Australian Alps Walking Track, I have always assumed it was just that a walking a track but I am lead to believe we can drive it. If you have other tracks you want to checkout, I'm all for it.

So I presume Jamieson-to Mt Sunday then alpine walking track (one of the best tracks around) then to barkley river jeep and back to Middle ridge rd , I presume you`ll be taking that rd then to Licola.
I honestly don`t think your going to get that far, if there is snow. but hey some of my best trips are the ones with challenges and surprises .

That track is fairly good, have done it 3 times, if you dont like pinstripes, not where you want to go, also a good winch is needed, it will most likely be an all day'er in the wet. Did a dry weather run and it was 4hrs with 5 cars.
cheers.

Hi Brad ,

Dave from Merrijig - have a look if you want Vic high country bush trips from Merrijig - Facebook site my site - posted a heap of photo of this track ( Mt Mc Kinty )
the track you are doing is Sunday track - inc Mt McKinty ( 1350 mtrs ) - you will call it something else later - the hardest way is from north to south only my opinion .....in the wet I did it - , from south to north - it is 25km and took about 5 hours - winching - only 2 vehicles . highly recommend - you all take chains ...for each vehicle ...also will help heaps in the mud - - or clay sections ...( this weekend )
I have a group also keen in the winter - but if this snow hits hard - I look forward to hear how you go ....it will be very extreme - phone service in one spot only -

there are some short steeps - 1 very short and very steep - rocky outcrop - I call this section the great wall of china .........the last part if heading south to Licola is ..then a very long climb on loose rock - if snow covered - well who knows - you might be the ones that gets it done - or spend a another night out .

it will be one of the best testers of all - if you cant get there - turning back - is an option take care - hope it helps prepare u more .

Cheers Dave.

Thanks for the info. I'm looking forward to it.

If no one else is crazy enough to join me I might have to adjust my plans.

I really need to get my bloody front locker in! I would definitely be crazy enough to join but my car will definitely struggle at this point.. that youtube video looks awesome! And with a bit of snow it'll make the drive that much more enjoyable (or scarier)

Also at this point car also has a rattle I yet need to fix before hitting the bush again.

Yeah best not to come if your truck isn't in tip top shape. I am guessing if I go by myself I'll just drive until it gets too difficult. Setup camp and then go back down the following day. So there will be another trip in the future I imagine.
