Selma Snow run. MEDIUM / HARD

Walhalla, VIC

See more trips

The snow season has been very average this year but there has been some good falls recently and the next reasonable dump is forecast from Thursday Aug 17th down to 1100 mtrs for a few days. We had a trip up to Mt Selma a few weeks ago and were fortunate enough to see some 'white stuff' and if the forecast is correct, I expect to see more this time.

As well as driving in snow, we will also be driving some of the good tracks in the Walhalla area on route to Mt Selma. Most of the tracks are of medium standard, but there a couple, Fultons for example, that can be on the hard side especially if wet so trip standard is rated 'Medium/Hard'. If you wish to take part in this trip, you and your vehicle must have the following minimum requirements;

Tyres:                                                                      32" either aggressive A/T's or M/Ts. (no H/T tyres).

Suspension/body lift:                                            Not mandatory, but advantageous.

Winch:                                                                     Preferred.

Recovery Gear:                                                     All vehicles must have the basics; snatch strap, shackles, rated recovery points etc.

Snorkle:                                                                  Whilst preferable, if you dont have one please bring a tarp/water blind for river crossings.

UHF Radio:                                                             Mandatory, either in car or hand held.

This will be a big day of 4wding. Please be at Erica Pub by 9.15am at the latest for a 9.30am departure. Ensure you have suitable warm clothing as it is possible that we may encounter blizzard conditions. Be self sufficent with lunch/drinks as we will stop somewhere for a 30 minute lunch break.  Plan is to be 'airing up' by 5pm to make our way home and if anyone is keen, we can stop at the Erica Pub for a counter meal before heading home.

Last available fuel is in Moe so advisable to top up your tanks there. Total distance from Moe back to Moe will be aprox 200 klms with low range required on a large percentage of the tracks we are driving.

;CHECKING IN'.    ALL participants MUST check in by 1.00pm on Friday the 18th.  If not checked in by this time, you will be removed from trip.

Any questions, feel free to ask.

PS: If anyone has a chainsaw, please bring it along. It is possible that there may be strong winds on the day, so best to have a couple handy in the event of fallen trees.

G'day Al! Since my last trip with Kelvin was rated 'medium', and this one is 'medium/hard', I'm a bit lost at the ratings.... How will it compare to the last Toolangi trip?

Dutchy, as you know I always prefer to rate any trip a bit harder than it actually might be. You have done most of the tracks with me previously, so you will be fine. As I said, most of the tracks will be medium with only a couple a little harder; hence the trip rating.

That filled quickly, looking forward to meeting some of the guys I am yet to meet. Will work out the route over the next few days, but 1st track of the day will be Fultons; (yes Alex going in the direction you havent been) and will then have a few options depending on weather/track conditions etc.

Will see you at the Caltex Pauly, thanks for letting me know. Yes, Fultons has some challenging bits in the dry, more 'character building' when wet. Whilst 80% of the track is probably only medium rating, the other 20% is hard and I always roll my eyes when some say it is a easy track. Have seen many vehicles having to winch one section in particular.

Alex, you will enjoy 'going the other way', especially if we do the full track; l'm not sure if you have done this before. Again it will all depend on weather/track conditions on the day.

Shit Dutchy, you cant take a trick with your dogs at the moment; hope all goes well. You can get by without the sliders on the trip and what locker did you buy?

tell me about it Allan. I've only had Blackers (the black lab obviously) 1 1/2 years, but he's so lovely and easy going. Thought he looked a bit bloated thursday, when it wasnt looking better friday i saw the local vet, swollen spleen, did bloods, Saturday the results showed blood cancer. Basically nothing you can do, just hope you get the timing right when you let him go, if he doesn't go before then. So hard, he doesn't look bothered at all, so hard to decide the right moment.
Harrop E-locker, haven't bought it yet though. Was hoping for a deal at the shop. About $2100 installed normally.

Hi Allan, what time at Caltex ? Is 7.15 the go ?
"AND", it had better not be hot as it looks like I have to drop my air-conditioning belt, the tensioner bearing is starting to squeak. Not bad, it only lasted 12 months grrr.
It's only 20 bux at the bearing shop but I don't have time to do it between now and Sat worse luck.

Dont think you will need your aircon Alex; forecast is for a max of 11 degrees in Walhalla on Saturday so think it will be between 0 and 5 up in the hills. Hope your heater is working.

Yep 7.15am if you want a bite to eat; will be leaving at 7.45am sharp.

Good deal, thanks, yes, the heater is full of kero and ready to burn.
I sent this to Marks 4WD:
Hi Nick

I’ve attached some pics as best I could rolling around under my car just now.
Car was converted by 4x4 Obsession just under 3 years ago. About 12 months ago I had a squeal from the front of the engine somewhere, process of elimination it was coming from the AC tensioner pully.
Took it off and the 2 single row bearings in it had gone dry and started to seize, the pulley had started spinning on the bearing.
I replaced the 2 singles with a wider single bearing and a washer to try and keep dirt out, but 12 months later, probably done 5,000 klms as its not my daily drive, and its going again, same bearing noise.

I don’t so mud, just the odd river crossing, but want to have a spare pulley with bearings already set up so I can quick change on the roadside.
If this is unusual any idea why mine, which does ultra low miles, would be on its 3rd bearing so quickly ?

I’d also like a spare water pump to suit my fan drive as well, just in case that goes on a long trip.

Cheers,
Alex.

Good luck Alex, hope you have success.

Found a link that is Mt Selma specific and forecast only gets better for snow; up to half a metre from Wednesday with a big dump on Friday night. Fair bit of rain on Tuesday/Wednesday so tracks will be slippery, but I guess upside is 'no dust'.

https://www.mountain-forecast.com/peaks/Mount-Selma/forecasts/1463

Could those who are coming please advise who can bring a chainsaw. Mine needs a new chain and I wont have time to replace it this week.

Hi all, hope you have a great weekend! ... Just some info which may help planning the trip. I did Fulton Creek Track from north of Walhalla to O'Tooles couple weeks ago. The condition of the track was "technical" and in some part i would consider HARD if you don't have locker. Some sections are quite rocky now. For those who were on my snow trip, it would be much much easier than Strictland Spur Track but Fulton is a lot steeper. All the crossing level were VERY low, so hopefully it will stay that way. It took us around 4 hours to complete the track with 8 cars.
Have fun guys and thanks Allan for running the trip.

Thanks Gazza. I was wise enough to but a few dabs of bearing retaining compound on the inside of the pulley this time so the pulley couldn't spin on the outside of the bearing. I ripped the old one out last night and have the best quality W5203 bearing they could find coming in to Bearing Wholesalers in Lilydale about lunch-time today. So Ill be changed out and done by tonight. Its easy to get to a 5 minute job. Its a serpentine belt so if it was out of alignment it would throw the belt pretty quick, that said it only goes around the crank pulley, the back (flat) face of the belt runs over this tensioner, then round the A/C pulley and back to the crank, so not much serpentine action. Anyway, I'll have a fully set up 'ready to change' spare in my toolbox in case it ever happens roadside- so far its 18 months per bearing, pretty average. Hopefully this new one is better quality.

And bring on that snow !

Alex are u cleaning your engine bay with degreaser? If so stop now. Degreaser does exactly what it says. Removes all the grease and wax from all those places which should have some sort of protection or lubrication. Use wd40 or similar style product.

Alex - I had the same problem, blanked off the holes in the bash plates as water was getting forced in by river crossings and slowed down ( yes) a bit on any river crossings.
I also now tend to keep away from water on the left hand side of car eg puddles as thats where all the bearings, the starter, alternator etc are.

Thanks for that Kelvin. Like you I consider some parts of Fultons hard to very hard and we will 'play it by ear' as to how far we venture along this track as I have no interest in spending half the day winching. We also did some of Fultons on the earlier Mt Selma trip and I was surprised at how low the river crossings were. I expect them to be a little higher this trip as a fair bit of rain is forecast for today and tomorrow.

Hi Dan long time no see hope to catch you on a trip haven't seen you since I think Woods Point last ?

Eh, wash ? What's that ??? Yeah, no I don't degrease if it's one thing they got right with the LS is no oil leaks. The 1FZ was like the Exxon Valdex in comparison. I'm hoping bad luck the guys at Marks' aren't familiar with it and neither are the 80 series LS forums. Fingers crossed this new bearing goes a bit longer than 18 months, sure the cost isn't a biggie but its something I want to forget about and not have to do every other oil change or similar !

On a side note; if it is raining at Erica for the meet up,might be a good idea to meet at the shelter/toilet block opposite the pub; you cannot miss it. Again, just a reminder, if you have a chainsaw, bring it along if you can.

Hello Alex

I have spoken to the boys

Just for the part you need it’s just over $85.00
There was a change to the product 3 years ago and you must have missed this by a fraction

It also looks like your pulley might be installed back to front
I don’t have one of the original setups like yours but this is how the new one goes together

The bush is designed to run on the bracket side not to be locked down nut side

After talking to management we have decided to send you a new pulley setup and see how you go
Please contact me to organise this
