Snowy River National Park 15/16th Nov 2014

Friday

We intend to set off early Saturday so please try to get there on Friday arvo. Let me know if you cannot make it so we can organize to meet Sat morning.

  • Arrive at my place Friday and setup camp.

  • Short brief about trip on Friday night, tea, fire, few drinks all fun.

  • I have decided to change the camp area to the bottom of our property for more space. It is flatter and sheltered from the wind. Will update photos shortly.

  • I have also hired a porta toilet from Coats which will be there for all to use. If you want I would love it if each one of you could dip in $15ea to cover the cost of it. Other than this there is no cost at all. I think it is best for the girls/kids and it is too far to our house for number 2s. There will be plenty of fire wood and a generator if required. Obviously as mentioned before you will need to bring your own food, drink, camping gear and 4WD.

Saturday. Up early...

I have uploaded 3 files.

  1. Map outlining the trip and its direction.

  2. Jacksons crossing over the snowy.

  3. Haunted Stream

Dedick Trail The trip starts from Buchan which is about 45 mins from My place. It is all black stuff north till we hit a little town called Seldom Seen (when you get there you will know why it is called Seldom Seen) From there we turn off onto Mickillops Rd (Marked as red on the map) This is dirt road but some caution is required along here as there is steep drop offs on the side of the road (no barriers) and it is in most places only one car width wide. Some amazing views from this road. After we cross the Mckillops Bridge we come across the Dedick trail on the right. This is approx 2.5 hours from my place. If we leave camp early we should have all day to travel on Dedick Trail and some of its side tracks. The Dedick Trail is marked in black on the map. At the end of the Dedick Trail we hit Yalmy Rd, this is a good dirt road and we stay on this until we get to the Varneys Track.

Jacksons Crossing After Yalmy Road we turn off on Varneys Track. This takes us down some hills into the snowy valley. I have included a map of the Snowy river crossing. This is quite easy when the river is low however it can be tricky. We will try to mark the crossing out the week before we do the tirp. We went out there a couple of weeks ago and in was not passable. But by Nov it should be ok and only 300mm or so average depth. The crossing needs to be taken seriously though as it has its dangers. If you are not confident on this crossing ask one of us to go across with you. It is daunting when you head out into what seems way too much water even if it is shallow. My son Joel and I know the crossing qute well, we will do it first then come back and take about 5 across at a time. After the crossing we head back to Buchan on the Jackson Crossing Track, we stay on this until we get to the Running Creek Track (marked as Green on the Map) This is steep and rocky but should be fine in dry weather (great fun when wet) At the end of the climb back out of the valley we return to Buchan on the Basin Rd. Depending on time we will divert for more tracks closer to home then eventually back to camp at my place.

Sunday. Up whatever time and packup.

Leave our place and head to Haunted Stream. I have marked the track as black on the map. This is about 45 mins from my place. We go through some private property for a while then make our way down into the valley. Please note this is not really a place for a camper trailer. So if you are bringing one you should leave it at my place then return to my place to pick it up. The track can be difficult at times but mostly simple. Heading into the valley the track has many large drop offs that are almost straight down for 100 meters or more. Once down to the stream it involves MANY crossings (40+) so please if you do not want to get your 4X4 wet do not come on this trip. You have been warned. It is one of my favorite tracks of all time. The scenery is magnificent and lush forest surround us everywhere. We should be back to Bairnsdale for lunch however I would pack lunch in case we take longer than normal. Those who want to head off early can do so from Dawson City (the end of the track) and work your way back to Bairnsdale or Stratford. If you have trailers you can follow me back to my place and head off from there or you can stay Sun night and head off Monday morning that is up to you which way you go.

Since there is a few Dave's going, I thought that I'd better have a think about this trip too?

Looks like a top area that I would love to check out. Will know later if I can join.

Sounds like a good trip. Once a date is locked I will be able to commit. Just have to check the work roster.

Hey Al I think the plan is to camp out at Jackson's crossing on the Saturday night, a decent drive back to your accomodation
      19 Aug 2014
      Trip Leader Dave (disco)
Hi All, Yes we may not get back to my place on the Saturday night. Jacksons Crossing is about an hour and a half from my place on the Snowy river. There is some accommodation near Buchan called Buchan Farmhouse Accommodation (03) 5155 9394, my guess this is only 30 mins from Jacksons crossing.

Here is perhaps a better option. We leave all our gear setup at my place head off a little earlier then we just come back to my place regardless of time, that way we are all together and have a central return point. Then if we have time we can play a little at Jacksons crossing as there is a few short good tracks around that area. Joel and I will head off about 2 weeks before on our bikes to check the track as well to confirm it is all ok and open. We will also have a better idea of time by doing that.

G'day guys, would a d40 with 2inch lift muddys bullbar and winch be ok for this trip?

Hey Dave (disco), how far is the petrol station from your place?
      20 Aug 2014
      Trip Leader Dave (disco)
Hey kelvin, There is Fuel at Swan Reach (5 mins from my place) there is also Fuel at Buchan which is the last fuel stop on the way. On the way back we can also fill up at Buchan if anyone requires it. (We are doing a large loop of about 200KM) I would think most vehicles should be fine.
      20 Aug 2014
      Trip Leader Dave (disco)
Hey David (Davidb) I would think you should be fine. In most cases the trail is graded after Winter and as I mentioned above we will go and have a look a couple of weeks before the trip. It can get rutted out quick due to rain and other 4x4 going through but it should be fine. Winch/Tires and lift is probably most important.

      Kelvin (TREXGQ) Premium Member
      Thanks Dave....
I am happy to camp anywhere.....so I think there are few options:
      1. Camp at Jackson Crossing (far from any fuel stop but close to where we will be going on Sunday)
      2. Camp at Buchan Cave Reserve (amazing camp site with hot water facility, toliets and awesome cabins, but it's not free)
      3. Camp at your place (a big round trip going back on Sunday but with fuel stop)
      4. Rolling camping (anywhere that suit us on that day)

Correct me if I am wrong Dave.....
      20 Aug 2014
      Trip Leader Dave (disco)
Hi Kelvin, Yes I am open with anything really, whatever works and suits all is easy with me.

Ok, lock me in please. Will have my two boys & hopefully the lovely Kylie will join us? My 2 cents is a base camp as setting up on rolling camp is a pain in the bum when the whole family come. Please let me know if there is any costs involved for camp.
      20 Aug 2014
      Dave (Stoops) Premium Member
The base camp doesn't leave much time for wheeling on the Sunday, 1.5 hours to get to the tracks, 2 hours wheeling, 1.5 hours to get back to Swan Reach and then 3.5 - 4 hours to get home (bloody big day).
      20 Aug 2014
      Trip Leader Dave (disco)
Hi David (Paul Patrol) There is no cost mate you are welcome to stay just bring your own food and drink and obviously camp gear. I have plenty of firewood. You can also use our house toilet on Fri or Sat night if required.

Dave (Stoops) I was planning on Sat being the main driving day and Sunday bit of a sleep in then head home. I do know some other tracks around local to me (10 15 mins away) and we can do them on Sunday if you guys want to but I know it is a long drive home for you all. If you really want I know some very difficult tracks that are only 10 mins from my place.

If you all keen we can do Haunted Stream on Sunday, it is 40 mins from My place and heads from the Alpine Hwy back towards Dargo. So you are kind of heading in the right direction. There is 40 river crossings on the Haunted stream track and it is a great track. Here is a video I found on youtube. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8tA5V6E8uI from mid through to end is the Haunted Stream. We can work this stuff out on Sun morning and make a decision on it then.

Hey Dave (disco), are there any challenging tracks that you want to try in the past but didn't want to venture alone? .... It may be good opportunity to explore them with so many experienced drivers in this trip..... just a thought..... my god... still 3 months to go!....
      20 Aug 2014
      Trip Leader Dave (disco)
Hey Kelvin, yes there is so many areas that I have still not ventured into but the problem in this area is you need a few days to do it properly and we normally do it on the motor bikes as it is quicker and does not spoil the fun of going back in 4x4 I will certainly find more tracks and have many more trips organised for you guys.

      Hi All,

Here is an update to the trip for November.

Friday afternoon (or Friday any-time you like. (We intend to set-off early Saturday so please try to get there on Friday arvo. Let me know if you can not make it so we can organise to meet Sat morning.)
Arrive at my place and setup camp.
Short brief about trip on Friday night, tea, fire, few drinks all fun.
I have decided to change the camp area to the bottom of our property for more space. It is flatter and sheltered from the wind.

      Saturday. Up early...

I have uploaded 3 files. 1.. Map outlining the trip and its direction. 2.. Jacksons crossing over the snowy. 3.. Haunted Stream Track

1.. The trip starts from Buchan which is about 45 mins from My place. At the end of the Dedick Trail we hit Yalmy Rd, this is a good dirt road and we stay on this until we get to the Varneys Track.

2.. After Yalmy Road we turn off on Varneys Track. This takes us down some hills into the snowy valley. I have included a map of the Snowy river crossing. Heading into the valley the track has many large drop offs that are almost straight down for 100 meters or more. Once do

      Cheers

      Hi Shannon,

We will not be doing anything that deep, these creeks or rivers flow fast so we don't want to be too deep. It is up to you, I would always do snorkel just to be safe but should be fine for this trip.

Disappointing, as it looks a great trip. Hope to catch up another time. All the best for the weekend - have an enjoyable time.

Ok, as I'm a bit reluctant to take my kids out of school, is anybody interested in a 4pm meet at the servo on the highway just past the Officer exit? If the majority are leaving earlier I'll take the kids out of school earlier as I'm hopeless with directions.

If you have a firm time when you're heading up & you don't mind me tagging along, please let me know so I can make arrangements........only 7 more sleeps!

Tereza I am guessing the rivers will be down so I don't thing it will be a problem,I will try and remember to put in my water bra that you can use if you think you need to, those Colorado's go alright but don;t go higher than 2 inches, so it looks like you will have the newest truck on the trip, the first scratch is devastating then it gets easier, looking forward to meeting you all.

It all depends if you want to drive 5+ hours just to find out your stuck on one side of a river. You then say 'stuff it' and try and cross, only to break your steps off on a rock and watch them float down the river just before your new truck sucks in a gallon of water doing God knows how much damage. This means you'll need to be pulled out by someone and wait several hours for a tow, if they can reach you at all.
I really don't mean to offend but that's the possible reality.

      Hi Tereza,

I've done a reccy run with Dave few weeks ago and most of the tracks were relatively dry and easy except the Jackson Crossing with very fast current and deep. We didn't end up crossing and had to turn around. Having said that, I have been on a trip with a Colorado and it drove a bonnet deep river crossing without any problem..... on the other hand, I've seen idiot drunk a jeep with creek only 20cm deep..... it's all about correct speed and momentum......

Without knowing your previous experience and your 4wd details, it's hard to say. We always prepare for the worst when venturing to high country. One thing for sure that there are plenty of very experienced 4wders in this trip, we will assist you no matter what happen and we will not leave you behind.

      Hope this helps.

      Trip Leader Dave (disco)
      Hi All,

Today was not a good day, got 3/4 of the way to the tracks to check them out and my front diff blew up. Had to remove my front drive shaft and crawl home. it is at the mechanics now, we pulled it apart and its just a pinion bearing, luck no major damage. So I have to get a new bearing tomorrow and hopefully it will all go back together ok. So I have not been able to check if the tracks are open or not. They are marked on the maps as open so we will just have to see next weekend. If they are shut we know of plenty of other places that we can go. Kelvin if I cant get my diff fixed I might have to ride with you...

Weather forecast for the next 7 days is rain, rain & more rain (woo hoo!). I'm keeping the weather forecast a secret from the lovely Kylie though because she'll stay home if she knows.

Yes, the weather is going to be nice with plenty of rain before the trip.....should help minimize the dust..... I expect the convoy will be over a km long...with car at least 40 meters apart.....
Good idea to have oil changed before this trip...... but if we do a lot of river crossing, may be worth to change them again......

Yes my last trip too, I think the Disco will be fine, we have a good bearing place in Bairnsdale I will be there first thing in the morning to get them. Very lucky that the diff did not get damaged, it sounded like the whole diff broke, then loud winning sound. Ashcroft diffs are awesome, not many standard diff gears could handle that.
      09 Nov 2014
      Trip Leader Dave (disco)
Good news, got the bearings, all fixed up and I just took it for a test drive and all looks good. Off now to get some firewood from the forest.

That's great mate!.... Do you think it was caused by the riving crossing we did few weeks ago?..... Did you change your oil since that trip?
      10 Nov 2014
      Trip Leader Dave (disco)
Hi Kelvin, no the oil was perfect after that trip, I am sure the problem was pulling the bloody truck up the hill 20 times to get the gravel into my driveway. The bearing just collapsed. Mind you that diff has done a lot of KMs now and it was in the green Disco and we both know I put that through hell hahaha...
