Walhalla - Mt Selma Loop. MEDIUM / HARD

Walhalla, VIC

See more trips

As Alex's snow trip is unlikely to take place anytime in the near future due to lack of snow, I have decided to head out for a day trip next Saturday to one of my favourite 4wd locations. There is a slight chance that we may see a light dusting of snow near Mt Selma (1470 mtrs), but this is highly unlikely. The trip will be a full day driving a variety of tracks where low range will be required for the majority of the day. Whilst the trip is rated 'medium/hard', most of the tracks will be of medium standard,  but if time permits, there are a couple of harder tracks that may be included in the days adventure. Deep Creek tracks and Trig Track are not part of the  day as all are seasonal closures. Please DO NOT join or express interest in this trip unless your vehicle meets the following minimum requirements.

TYRES:                                        Minimum of 31" being either aggressive A/T's or mud tyres.

RECOVERY GEAR:                     All vehicles must have basic gear being snatch strap, shackles etc & rated recovery points.

UHF RADIO:                               In car or hand held.

WINCH:                                      Preferred but not mandatory.

SNORKEL:                                  Advantageous but if you do not have, please bring a tarp/water blind for potentially high river crossings.

Again, this will be a full day of 4wding so be prepared for a possible late finish. Everyone attending must be self sufficent in regard to food/drinks etc and lunch stop will be only aprox 30 minutes, so do not bring the bbq etc. Rug up with warm clothing as it will be cold. In regards to fuel, last opportunity is Moe, so advisable to top up there. Anticipate the round trip from Moe back to Moe being aprox 200 klms.

As some know, I am somewhat padantic in regard to 'checking in'. If you have not checked in by 9am Friday the 21st, you will be REMOVED from trip, no exceptions, and someone else given the opportunity to attend.

Please be at Erica Pub by 8.45am at the latest as we will leave at 9am sharp after introductions and drivers briefing.

We did a somewhat similar trip a few weekends ago, Thomson Dam to Mt Selma, Licola and back across to Donnelly area and Walhalla. There was no snow at Mt Selma (or even the Jamieson-Licola Road), but on our second day back to Donnelly, we came across a fair amount of snow on South Road. Mt Useful lookout had a fair bit as well.

I'd suggest going up Binns Road to South Road and then head north to Mt Selma. You could even take Army Track from Binns Road up to Store Point (or Williamson Spur before that) and then Morning Star to South Road (Middle Star Track had a section at the start that would require winching for all).

Or you could take Binns Road directly to McEvoys and then South Road up to Mt Selma and on your way back take Middle Star Track to Store Point and Army Track to Binns Road.

I've thrown in the towel and admitted defeat on the snow trip, beaten by this fine June and July weather. So hitting the tracks this Saturday seems like a plan.

Thanks for that Ray. Plan is to drive a number of 4wd tracks up to Mt Selma and then if time is marching on, we will come back via Binns etc. Thanks for the 'heads up' regarding Middle Star; we'll give that a miss as am over winching after our Tallarook trip...lol

Have fun Allan ,
Re last weekends trip.
Despite the lack of snow it was still cold , average temp above 900m was -2 and had plenty of Icy patches on the rocky base sections of tracks that normaly provided good grip , so made things interesting but caused no real problems . Apart from that was Grouse all the way from Go to Whoa :)
Cheers Rick

Chance that we might see some snow on Saturday if channel 7 weather was correct. Snow done to 800 mtrs overnight with light falls again tomorrow; fingers crossed.

Working out which tracks we will do 1st and still thinking I might stay in Erica Friday night. If I dont, am happy to meet at Caltex Longwarry to drive in convoy up to Erica.

Will be a long day tomorrow, pick up ladder at Spring St at 6.30am, start at Footscray at 7.00, workstations to be cabled finished about 3.00 so I can do my bits, hope to finish by 8.00 then 1 hour home, unpack work gear and load up the wheeling gear. Should be on the coach by 10.00.
See you at the servo for some breakfast.
Erwin is my sisters partner and he has just joined the forum to attend this trip so don't be to harsh if he doesn't check in, he is self employed and rather busy...

Thanks for that Alex. Discomatt and I will be at the Caltex Longwarry about 7am and I suspect the 2 other Matts will head straight to Erica as they live in the area. Not sure if Shane and Erwin are going to meet at the servo or at the pub. Unfortunately I have had to remove one of the participants who failed to 'check in', so a spot is now available.

Well done Neil on getting the vacant spot. I know some will find it a bit harsh re; check in, but I do make it perfectly clear in the trip details.

About 10cm of snow fell at Mt Baw Baw last night, so I think we might see a small amount of 'white stuff' up at Mt Selma tomorrow. See you guys tomorrow morning.

Thanks Alex; it was a top day. Hope everyone got home ok and agree, Neil will have been up at 'sparrows' Sunday morning to wash the Patrol. Looks as though we all got through unscathed.

Have started the report in the 'Trip Report & Experiences' section of the forum.
