Tanjil 4x4 Explore - Recce run (prepare the unexpected) HARD

Tanjil (South of Mt Baw Baw, West of Erica), VIC

See more trips

*** Update - 22 July ***

Ok here is the proposed itinerary, I have uploaded the GPX files to the file section.

Day 1 - From Seninis Camp to Toorongo Falls Camp, north of Noojee (100km)

  • We will drive pass a few camp grounds including Caringal Scout Camp, Tanjil Junction Camp (an alternative camp, if we can't reach to Toorongo Falls Camp)

Day 2 - From Toorongo Falls back to Moondarra State Park (between Moe and Erica) (100km)

  • Back track via south of Noojee, visit Blue Rock Lake, then goes up to Mt Tanjil (and Mt Carmel), finish at the end of Wild Cow Track coming out at Moe-Rawson Road.

You will need to have enough fuel for 2 days (200km).

OK guys, this is a new and unknown area yet to be explored. I am assembling a A-Team with some of the best 4wds and drivers I know of. You have to be in your A-game, with your truck in top-condition.

Tanjil is a large area south of Mt Baw Baw. There are heaps of tracks in the area which are not seasonal closed. You can't find much info about this area. It's an area with lots of rain so be prepared for some mud. I will avoid bog hole at all cost but you never know what's ahead until we go exploring. The plan is to move west and north and head to Tanjil Bend as the finish point. There will be a few camp sites along the way, so we will assess the location and camp on Sat.

I may camp on Fri night at a camp called Seninis camp if any of you would like to camp. We will meet up others in Erica general store on Sat early morning at 8am.

Hi all, thank you for joining this trip. Hopefully it will be a fun weekend. I expect the tracks will be very muddy rather than technical. Well, let's see what we can find over there.

As usual, please double check your winch condition and make sure your winch controller is in your car. Check all the recovery gear, recovery points etc. Now it's time to check your vehicle to make sure it's in top shape. You may still have time to get things fixed before the trip.

Lastly, I want to know if anyone who WILL NOT camp on Fri night.

Hi Kelvin I won't be camping Friday night. Also at this stage I may have to head home at the end of the day Saturday. The wife wants me home for dad duties with my 7 Week old son but I will see how we go I'm still working on her...

No problem mate. We are not too far from main road, not like we are deep in high country.

No problem for those who come late on Friday. I usually get to camp late on Friday late for most of my trips. I am hoping to get there a bit earlier this time.

See you all on Fri night / Sat morning at Erica.

Unfortunately Tanjil area is relatively low lying... we won't go above 900m

Hi all, I will be carrying my mini chainsaw. If you could also bring a chainsaw, it would be great.

I will be meeting Nathan (GU) in Moe tomorrow night and head to camp, possibly around 7ish. If you would like to join us, please let me know.

I will also carry a bag of firewood, if you could bring one, it would be great.

I am pumped, car is packed, see you all tomorrow night or Sat morning in Erica.

Hope you guys had fun. We went straight to Nojee and made away down to Walhalla. Then we climbed up to the top of Mt Selma, managed to find a hut and stayed there the night. Boy was it windy. And then the snow came, basically started at 4am and never let up all day. Kelvin you will need to turn that Patrol of yours into a snow plough for your trip tomorrow haha.

Hi all, thanks again for coming to my exploration trip last weekend. It was certainly full of adventure and unexpected. We ended up finding a hidden cracker track on Sunday afternoon, and spent a good 4-5 hours winching up 3 cars. I have uploaded some photos, you can take a look.

Thanks for those who got me out of tricky situation. The worst part is that the slippery hill has little ruts due to less usage, which couldn't guide my car down. It was definitely a hairy moment sliding down the hill.

Thanks again all, and see you next time.
