Mt Cole - The most technical 4wd destination in Vic (Express Interest Only) HARD

Mt Cole, VIC

*** Ignore the trip date for now ***

Alright guys, I can see there are heaps of interest in exploring (well, let's say tackling) Mt Cole, which is considered one of the most technical (insane) 4x4 destination.

I have posted this up for people who would like to join my first trip to Mt Cole when all the tracks are re-opened. Unfortunately most of the good tracks are now officially closed (and gated).

What to know what to expect? See below video from last week.

Hey btw am I reading correctly? 4.8 by patrol???

No more Toyota? No more hilux???
15 Jun 2017
Tony (le Dakar)
Yes. You read it correctly. These type of trips are the ones I enjoy the most, and they would have eventually killed the Hilux. I had already snapped two CV's and am sure there would have been more to come. The second one was with the slightest of tapps against the bank on a gentle climb.
Was sad to see he go, but realistically she was not made for the types of trips like Mt Cole. Have had the GU since January and am very impressed with the 4.8.

Yeah I completely understand.
She was a very sought after vehicle from what i had seen on the interweb and you had her kitted out nicely.
Looking forward to meeting you on this trip mate and seeing the new ride.
GU's are great rigs and have some tough as nails axles...
Though I must say , having an ifs before would have helped your driving style and has probably made you a very technical driver.
Is it auto or manual? (Gu)

Auto George. It was the desire for another Auto that led me towards the 4.8.

Definitely interested, even if I have to work I can make it a day trip as Mt Cole is about 45 mins from home for me in Snake Valley anyway.

Given the number of good tracks that are closed out there this will most likely be November or later. If there is enough interest (looks like there is) I am happy to run a 2nd convoy. This is the kind of place where 5 or 6 cars is the most you'd want in one group.

Chinamans campground is huge and has basic amenities of toilets and a "mess hall" shelter. There is also Ditchfields campground a little further to the south that is quite large and has toilets as well. Both would be suitable for 3 or 4 separate groups to meet up at for a common camping spot to share the days stories if we could get more trip leaders to put their hand up. I can help with the mapping side of things if anyone wants to run a convoy.

Chinamans is a bit of a secret. If you are lucky the backpackers use it to off load their camping gear when they leave the country. So far 2 instant tents, several camp tables, axes, LPG stoves etc.

But don't tell anyone OK....

I guess it's going to get busy around Mt Cole now that you guys have discovered it.

Yes, I am keen to run the "EXTREME" trip, (Twin locked, solid axle,) - or, whoever is interested or is in search for the toughest this place has to offer.
Those in this group please be advised, panel or vehicle damage is probable...

also ,
It would be good whilst up there and planned, to take note of whos leading the other groups, and know what channels they will be or take consecutive channels for saftey reasons if we need to contact other groups, eg 27 28 29
15 Jun 2017
George (Georgie_Kyro)
there seem to be a few twin locked rigs, and single locked rigs, so if we split it accordingly to twin locked single locked groups etc would be good.
I guess we will plan all this when we get closer

Worth noting that around 90% of the park has mobile coverage.

Just to clarify I will be doing just about as hard tracks as the extreme group. But allowing more time to complete as it will be slower going due to the likelihood of needing to winch.

Just had a thought that this may be a perfect location for the Xmas gathering. There is plenty of stuff for easy and medium as well. And Chinamans campground is big enough for a huge turnout. Plus it's only 2 hrs from Melb CBD.

Yes I understand that, it'll depend on your vehicle requirements. I got winch and all the stuff, and my aim is that by November when the tracks re-open I will have a locker in and also diff drop so CV's won't give me issues (hopefully). But we will see later on.. trip is still months away.

Hi all, thank you for those who have expressed your interest in Mt Cole trip. It has really given us a good indication the level of interest. We will post an official trip once we have confirmed the exact details. For the time being, we will remove this trip so that it doesn't get clogged up the actual trip listing.
