Mansfield to Walhalla High Country Trip MEDIUM / HARD

Alpine National Park, VIC

See more trips

A 4 day trip beginning in Mansfield and finishing in Walhalla. Trip will include visits to a number of huts, Craigs, Bindaree, Bluff & Lovicks along with many of the iconic tracks in this amazing part of Victoria. *File is attached with basic itinerary that is subject to change.*

All participants must be self sufficent with food/water etc and please ensure you have enough warm clothing as extremely cold nights, even snow, is common at this time of year. We will require a few of the participants to bring chainsaws and we can decide who will do this closer to trip date. Vehicle requirements are as follows;

Tyres:                                            31" minimum being either A/T's or Muddies.

Winch:                                            Preferred but not mandatory.

Lift:                                                 2" suspension/body lift.

Lockers/Traction Aid:                   Not required, but advantageous.

Snorkle:                                          Preferred but not mandatory. Even if you have a snorkle, a water blind/tarp should be included.

This should be a super trip driving some great tracks and visiting some iconic high country huts. I anticipate the loop from Mansfield to Walhalla will be 400+ klms so everyone should top up their tanks at our meeting place in Mansfield, (ULP, Diesel & Gas available). From Mansfield to Licola is aprox 250 klms, (80% low range), where both ULP & Diesel is available, so no need to carry jerry cans if you are sure your vehicle will cover this distance. From Licola to Moe, where 1st fuel available, aprox 200 klms.

Any questions/queries, please ask.

You just want to show everyone "Matt's Hill" as we head back to Walhalla....lol.

Thanks all who have joined so quickly, and great to see you join the trip Nick. Is going to be a long drive from Sydney & back, but am sure you will enjoy the trip as we will be going to places in the HC that you have yet to see.

On no.... 2 Paj's !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
08 Jun 2017
Matthew (discomatt)
I assumed Nick and his better half were going to down this way...
Not wrong about a long drive for a few days in the bush but well worth it.

As far as 2 Paj's the 2 V8's will be able to pull them out IF needed and All has nearly totally rebuilt his so it should be reliable ;-)

Matt, we were up in Sydney last weekend and mentioned trip to Nick & he said he is keen; joined the site too. His wife Mieke wont be coming and Nick plans to make his way down on Tuesday afternoon and meet us at Mansfield.

Am sure the mighty Pajeros wont need recovery unless the trip leader stuffs up.....again. Good to see Outrage has joined, just waiting on Neil now. Will invite one other vehicle to join us making it 8 for the trip.

Am going to send him a pm tonight Matt. You will be fine without a jerry or two wont you Matt?
09 Jun 2017
Matthew (discomatt)
Yep 1 jerry will see me through easily but will take 2 just in case of a last minute turn around . Normal on board LPG and fuel would more than likely see me through but better safe than sorry...

Whoo-hoo, I just looked up my long rang tank spec and its 166 litres plus the original 90 so its 256 all up. Good for 4 days no risk :-)
Never been game to fill it..... Always got scared after $200 came up on the bowser but for this trip it will be a fill to the brim job just look the other way filling up...

Haven't really tested it, didn't hear anything abnormal myself the rest of the trip. There are a few items that make noises on my patrol. Should have a free weekend soon, I'll take it to a dirt road and do some turning around.

Good luck with the D4 Matt; take the ranger????, not a chance in hell as it is not allowed to get dirty.

So you going to take the Bundera Alex?
24 Aug 2017
Matt (Outrage)
Senior engineer I work with has late model land rovers, one a disco. Recently chats have been $700 per tyre for just road ones, $700 battery, $1500 for a replacement windscreen, aren't new cars cool with all the nice features :)
25 Aug 2017
Matthew (discomatt)
When you look at service costs through a dealer the D4 is cheaper than a 200, yes some parts are pricey but a battery is a battery don't you think he may have been stitched up a little? When I had the panel shop 18 years ago I remember some European car windscreens were that much then. I know 1 guy that was charged 1200.00 for a wiper blade for a top of the range BMW and a guy who had a Audi who's high pressure fuel pump was quoted at $28000.
No point in busting your ass at work and having a bucket load in the bank when you die...
26 Aug 2017
Matt (Outrage)
They are very nice vehicles of course. Windscreen has sensors in it, guessing the battery is a top range item, tyres are probably an uncommon size and top range variant, european vehicle likely has a high speed rating. Told him you don't need to fit the 'exact' same tyre/battery. Money's not an issue so really just a case it's easier for him to have the dealer do what they want I think hehe.

Wipe blades were another thing he's mentioned, again they are designed to work at autobahn speeds, cost more as they are stronger and have some aerodynamics about them, could buy standard ones for our roads.

Reckon it would be easy enough to keep parts costs down if wanted to.
26 Aug 2017
Matthew (discomatt)
Not many $$ left over now, bought a new D4 SD HSE long range tank, rear Kaymar with twin wheel carriers, front bar with winch and spotties some extra wiring and a few other goodies :-)
27 Aug 2017
Matthew (discomatt)
I doubt it will be on this trip, need to sort an emergency repair / inflation kit for the air bag suspension , a plug in computer / fault reader and a set of after market wheels before it does any serious off road work.
It is mainly our touring toy but as I get used to it and a few more mods it will be used for 4wding weekends.
Man a twin turbo has plenty of get up and go....

Well done Matt; did you mean BRAND NEW?. Where are the pics?
28 Aug 2017
Matthew (discomatt)
Na not brand new, this model and spec was over $100,000 new plus the extras would have been another 20 :-0
Its 2013 and 30,000 km but like brand new except 2 small scratches.
Was checked by my LR mechanic today and was given the all clear so now they just have to organise the RWC and its mine :-).
Looking forward to not needing to think about fuel for over 1000km on long trips

Geez sounds like a nice bit of kit there Mat. Don't ever let me ride in it.... the old 80 would be hard to go back to. Look forward to seeing it on the right trip when you're ready. Does that mean the Disco 1 is now a fully fledged bush pig ready to fly ? I know a nice hilll......
28 Aug 2017
Matthew (discomatt)
Yep the D1 is now just a bush toy and yes its very nice, by far the nicest car I have ever driven or even been in, I now know why other D4 owners refer to their " pemagrin" when referring to driving their D4.

Picked it up tonight, was dark by the time I got home but will try to get some pics up over the weekend.
It wont take a selfie but the adaptive headlights are a spinout, they self adjust height depending on car angle and adjust to oncoming traffic, the best bit is they turn corners with the car so no lighting up the bush when cornering they just follow the road

Now less than 4 weeks to go. Long range forecast is for some rain on the Monday & Melb Cup day before the trip starts, so with luck we wont have any dust for a day or so.

Just wondering who is willing/happy to bring a chainsaw as no need for everyone to bring one along, think at least two will be plenty. In regard to wood; am sure we can find some along the way but I'll bring a bag for the 1st night camping just to be on the safe side.
12 Oct 2017
Matthew (discomatt)
I will bring my chian saw assuming I will be able to make it. Work as a Sub contractor shits me, quiet last week, nothing next week and who only knows after that.

Think I'll take the main roads this time Al, via cockatoo, yarra glen etc., it's actually the quickest way even from Morwell. Going via Licola is actually quicker than straight up through woods point.

Things are looking better for me now, 2 weeks of very quiet with enough work to put food in our mouths and nothing else I now have the next week totally booked including weekend work with some big jobs starting the following week so $$ wise will be OK now just hope I am not snowed under with work deadlines...

200 series?? surely not a 100 or another 80 .

we might need to organise a trip for the new rigs, no pin striping and no unseen 4 o clock tracks...

So we are still no wiser as to what Alex bought?.

On another note, we took the Ranger and the van away on the weekend to see how it towed etc etc. Skipworth Reserve had always been Cheryl's favourite place to take the van for a few days but she now has a new No.1.; Paradise Valley which is between Glenmaggie and Licola. Not cheap for unpowered camping but has flushing toilets/showers etc, with camping available between 1 & 2 klms along the Macalister River. Was quite busy but the nearest group to us was over 100 mtrs away.

Anyway, the Ranger towed the Jayco as though it was not there, so very happy. Sorry for going 'off topic' but got home tonight and have now packed the Paj for our trip in 9 days; cant wait.

The buggers didn't even thank us for saving them. As I recall they where Nissan drivers.
Yes Gazza, the drive down with a van would cause a few moments for some, especially if a vehicle was coming the other way.

Those Nissan drivers; so inconsiderate...lol

Went for morning swim today and almost stood on a tiger snake; that tested my 'sense of humour'.

Don't laugh- that 'was' a Bundera. They shortened a 76 series chassis, chopped out the Bundera firewall, welded in the 76 firewall and put the whole 76 dash in plus all the 76 panels. Schmick as !!! Told you, about a month's time...... These things take time !!!!!

Have decided I will stay either at the Bonnie Doon Hotel or Delatite Hotel in Mansfield on Tuesday night. Main reason is I am getting old and it is going to be a long day on Wednesday, so will try to get a bit of a sleep in Wed morning rather than leave home at 6am. Will head up late arvo on Tuesday and have a meal at the pub. A couple of good deals available, especially for the family room, so if anyone is interested yell out, as I am going to book tomorrow.

Also, I did a bit of a miscalculation re; klms from Mansfield to Licola. Is going to be between 350 & 400 klms instead of the 250 I said in the trip details, These klms also include the drive up the steep section of Dingo Hill then back down.to Macalister River Tk.

Which weather mob do you use Gazza, as the one I do said some rain clearing on Tuesday, chance of a light shower on Wednesday then fine for the remainder of the trip. Expecting snow tomorrow at Mt Buller, so 2nd time this week.

Alex, plan at this stage is just to drive the steep section of Dingo then U turn back down. B1 & B2 are a bit out of the way and in all honesty are not worth doing this trip as both are nothing to write home about. But we can do another time.

Discomatt, am sure someone might have room in their fridge for one bottle; I cant fit everything in my fridge as Cheryl has made enough food to last me a month.

So TEQ80 is sitting at the workshop getting new engine mounts, yay, new handbrake linings and dogbones plus the rear axle moved over one or two turns. And sitting next to it in the same shop is TREXGQ lol. Now that I’ve fitted the supposed *new and improved* air con idler pulley I benched the old one and gave it a reco to carry as a spare again, just in case. Instead of the single wide sealed roller bearing I’ve put in two sealed narrow NSK’s instead, back to back. But I pulled off the bearing seals of the back to back sides and flooded the rollers with grease before drifting them into the pulley. Even NSK are parsimonious with the amount of grease they put in... I’ve swamped the races and cages with boating grease. So if / when the new one carks it as well, super-lubed double bearing reco is ready to try. Rumble on !

Sounds like you have it all under control Alex

We have new GENUINE engine mounts fitted and a limiting chain between frame and mounting bracket to limit over extension. Happy days. Now, where's a shitbox track to try it out on.......

Also Gaz, fitted a pair of the aftermarket dogbones inside the handbrake shoes that's meant to give you more leverage on the linings. Can't be any worse than the non-existent handbrake all 80's have.

Gotta love e-bay :-) The lower swivel hub bearing cops a hammering which is why they can get brunelling (think that's the word) - when you're straight ahead all the load goes in the same place, every time... Hope so Neil. "And" I just quizzed Marks 4WD if this is a common occurrence and got a 'no'. But then he asked me if I was running the covers over the engine mounts and I'm, like 'what covers'. There's some metal bits missing...... I've looked at a couple of 80's and they are there as OEM parts mine have gone missing during the conversion. Might contribute so I'll scour a pair somewhere but the limiting strap is STAYING. Ellis, pah. Done it 50 times. albeit not recently. Sounds like a job for the Disco 4 and the FJ73 !!!!

In a standard 4wd, towing a camper trailer with a tinnie on the roof; easy easy.

On another note, who is going to the Xmas party on Dec 9th.? Both events are having people pull out, especially the Mt Cole one. Was thinking of going to the one at Templestowe, but will probably go up to Toc for the weekend to get the boat ready for my week up there between xmas/new year.

Also anyone else noticed the forum has almost no activity. As I said, tried to post a report of our trip and no go so went to ask question in general discussion and it wouldnt allow my post. If Kelvin has moved on with his employment, maybe he cant use the software anymore.

I am certainly not going to this weekends trip, camping in that much rain , no thanks but more to the point I think its plain irresponsible to go 4wding when that much rain is forecast. Government only has a very limited budget to repair tracks and having heaps of cars out when that wet is going to do massive track damage and it will be another small reason to close yet more tracks.
Some people talk the talk re responsible 4wding but actions speak much loader than words...Dumb asses IMO

The north/north east of vic had up to 180mm from 9am Fri to 9am Sat, the rest of today has only been up to 10mm for the area.

Melb was up to 40mm yesterday and around 15-20 so far today. Still considerable.

Things were meant to ramp up again tonight. Haven't seen the most recent forecast though as the time based part of the bom isn't working for me atm.

About 50mm all up here. Majority of the time the bulk of the rain either branches south following the hills towards the prom, or the mountains to the north.

I could use a giraffe, have one of those still spare?

Well well well. Yeah, I know, 3 holes in the ground.....

So the missing parts I had from my engine mounts were ordered from Japan for the princely sum of $45.00, or $90 the pair. They are called 'engine stabilisers' on the invoice and I've been missing them since the conversion 3 years ago. Fark me.....

It's like the engine mount is a clam-shell design and I've only had the bottom (rubber) half fitted - 4x4 Obsession clearly left the top (engine stabiliser) 1/2 off ......
The top bit is the 'clam shell' and it goes over the rubber mount like a big cover and limits the amount of 'sway' for want of a better word that the rubber mount can go through before it acts like a big bump stop on the lower half of the mount.
With the stabilisers fitted (yesterday) the difference was OBVIOUS the minute you fire the big 6.0 up. Instead of it feeling like it was jelly mounted - and I didn't know any different before- it now has less vibration and wobble and feels like a tighter install.
Let's hope the combo of both halves of the engine mount now in place, OEM mounts ILO after market, plus the limiting chain (which itself is a stealth install, -thanks to the 4WD Shed in Bayswater -as its covered in black heat-shrink and hidden under the exhaust) is enough to stop something like this happening again and not only botching everyone's trip but making it a PITA to get out of steep countryside on the day.

Anyway, I'm going to heat shield the lot in some of that embossed aluminium stuff and TEQ is track ready again. New and improved.

Anyone got any trips planned there's nothing on the forum these days ! Haven't touched the '73, no time, no $$, it's just sitting there staring at me from the shed every time I drive in and out.

Cheers.
