Dargo Exploration Trip - Queens Birthday Long Weekend EASY / MEDIUM

Dargo Camping in the wild, VIC

See more trips

I have a few friends pull out of a trip. So I will be heading out to explore the high country.

Don't have details of tracks as my knowledge is pretty limited in the area and keen to exlpore some huts and some iconic tracks.

Also still fairly new to 4x4'ing myself so won't be too hardcore.

Take your warm gear as the nights can get cold up there at this time of the year but that just adds to the trip, appreciate your fire and a few drinks to keep you warm at night.

Long weekend + high country = cops, just be mindful and have a great trip

Hey mate, me and two other mates are keen if we have someone in the convoy who knows the area pretty well.

Cheers

No worries Andrew. It will be great if someone knows the area. Otherwise I have a few tracks in mind. So just need to ensure they are not closed.

I hear Talbotville has some great camping spots.
Here is some ideas I am thinking of.

Also looks like alot of the main tracks will still be open which is good news.

Nathan,

Any ladies going? I was thinking of coming with my partner? I have some knowledge of the area, although it's been a while since I have been through the area.

Hey Mathew. No ladies. Mine has something on so she can't make it. But more than welcome to come.

Would be great to have you both.

Nathan, some other tracks i found that seem to be cool are;
Blue Rag Range track
Zeka Spur

I think we should stay in a hut for a night..

Zeka spur is good fun, did it last year but I'm pretty sure it's subject to closure.. There's gates at the top for sure.

Ross, you will more than likely be in National Parks at some stage over the weekend and no dogs allowed.

Given you guys are leaving Friday morning, we can only make it Saturday early morning.

Where will be a potential meeting spot?

Matthew (V8Avenger)
Thanks guys will check with the other half and confirm.

Also regarding Zeka Spur and other tracks mentioned they should all be open. After this weekend they will be closed.

Thanks for the heads up on the tracks Andrew Thurstain. I would love to try head up those tracks as well. Between track closures, and some strict fuel management might prevent me from doing so I think.
The 4.8 drinks fuel like water going out of fashion.

We got a 4.8 and 2 x tb42 Gqs.. all dual fuel though.

Will be carrying atleast 2 x jerry cans each on the roof rack and behind my seat for me.

And i need to know where you guys are planning to camp on Friday night as we will be coming Sat early morning so can meet you guys in your camp spot.

Hey Nathan,
If you are worried about fuel but would like to do Zeka spur you can do as below coming from Dargo:
From Talbotville camping area you can go to Wonangatta Station via Crooked River Track and Wonangatta Track (50km)
If you want to you can even camp there.. it's a great spot behind the station.. from there you can go up Zeka spur (30kms from station to Howitt Rd intersection) and then another 70kms to Licola (dirt road.. which is subject to snow if you are lucky!) where there is fuel. Total 150kms which I'm sure your tank should be enough.

Blue Rag would be quite far so you probably will have to decide which way you want to head, Zeka or Blue Rag . If you decide Blue Rag probably nearest fuel would be around Bright.

Just a couple ideas for you guys to think about. Of course if your doing Crooked River make sure everyone has a snorkel at least.

Hi Andrew,
Yes it would be good for everyone to confirm if they going.
So the plan is to get a camp at Talbotville Camping ground.
https://goo.gl/wDrI8n

Being a long weekend. It may be quite packed. So the back up plan is to find another spot along the river called "Crooked River Track"

So if you don't find us at Talbotville camping ground. Head down Crooked River Track
We will be on channel 29. listening out for you if you decide to come

I love that area and I would come with you guys but this weekend is not looking too good for me.. Was supposed to get my canopy fitted but unfortunately it's been delayed... So I only have a tray on at the moment.. Meaning no storage for camping stuff.. And also looks like some other stuff came up so weekend is going to be busy!

Was thinking the same thing. Maybe it's the leader. Lol.

Am still very tempted to go check it out myself.
But maybe not for the first time. He he

Even got my rooftop map and had post it notes of the planned spots. Oh well. Next time.
