Long Tom Hill and Wildlife Shelter Volunteering EASY / MEDIUM

Stanley State Forest, VIC

See more trips

Spoke to Glenda the shelter owner, she is very excited that she has a few people comming to help out for the weekend, we just need to be prepared for the cold but dry weather!

I have decided to move the camp to Yackandandah Holiday Park, hubby says I'm getting soft wanting hot showers, and a covered kitchen with open fire, wood supplied and power for my electric blanket! I say there's no point getting older without getting wiser!

If you wish to join us it's $10 per night for power, water, toilets, showers and wood for the fire included. I do need to know numbers so I know how many sites to book.

If you still wish to bush camp, we can meet up with you as we pass the bush camps on the way to the shelter. Lunch plus morning and afternoon tea will be provided.

Julian and I are heading to Kangaloola Wildlife Shelter in the Stanley State Forest near Yackandandah over the Queens Birthday long weekend to do some of those jobs that just never get done; building new aviaries, clearing out a garage, chopping firewood and putting up shelters are just some of the jobs Glenda would love to have done!

http://www.kangaloolawildlifeshelter.org.au

https://www.facebook.com/KangaloolaWildlifeShelter/

a not for profit shelter with over 110 animals run by an amazingly passionate lady who has been working with wildlife for over 50yrs.

Itinerary:

• Friday - We will arrive late afternoon to secure camping spots and get the camp oven going to feed everyone who comes in on Friday night

Arrive at Kangaloola for introduction and briefing before Glenda sets tasks for the day. Camp fireside meal (happy to cater for late arrivals) or head home

• Arrive at Kangaloola for briefing before Glenda sets tasks for the day. Consider dinner at Yackandandah pub as a group or camp fireside meal or head home

• Mon 10pm head out into Stanley State Forest to do some 4wd tracks and tackle Long Tom Hill (weather and conditions permitting). There are dirt bike and mountain bike tracks in the park if anyone is interested as well as a secret underground hut for walkers or head home

We are asking anyone who has some time over this weekend to come along and join us as many hands make for light work! We hope to be camping just 1km from the shelter and we are happy to have a hot meal ready and waiting for late arrivals on Friday night. Glenda will supply the materials and tools for all the jobs she would like us to work on, we are supplying the labour; in return we will ensure you are all well fed at lunch and am/pm tea. We anticipate our days being busy and are looking for people interested in giving something back. You will be surprised what can be achieved in just a few hours if this is all you have to spare!

Please note we are not asking you to commit for the whole weekend, just letting you know what our itinerary is in the hope you can spare a day or two or even a few hours.

Happy to answer any questions

Have a good trip guys, I ran a trip in that area last year, so many things to see and explore. We did Long Tom too, it was a bit dry but still a bloody good climb. Thanks Susan for running the trip.

Thanks Kelvin.
Did you have a map or just take it as it came? I'm having trouble sourcing a good map of the tracks.

We have 3 vehicles and 6 volunteers so far through a 4wd meetup group, could do with a little more man power for some of the jobs Glanda is hoping for us to do.
If you decide to join us please can you let me know what days you are up for volunteering, how many of you and if you are going to be late in to camp Friday or Saturday and would like me to cater dinner for you.
Thanks

Thanks Dave for your interest. If you do decide to join us Friday I can have some food ready for when you get there if that helps and lunch is provided on Saturday.
Enjoy your week.

I was gearing up to arrive Friday for the whole weekend but have to withdraw from the trip as I have to make a trip to the UK for a family bereavement leaving on Friday.
I hope you have another working trip there in the future as I really want to help out there.

Have a great safe weekend.
Mark.
