Cobaw State Forest - Day Trip MEDIUM / HARD

Cobaw State Forrest, VIC

See more trips

First time heading out to Cobaw. Have a list of moderate to difficult tracks to check out. Meet at 9:00am, have lunch at around 12 (BYO), and go to roughly 5:00pm. If you want to come up and leave early that's fine.

Recommend having either agressive AT or MT tyres and lift, not suitable for HT's or light AT's. Winch may come handy on the more challenging tracks.

G'day Matthew,
I was out at Cobaw last weekend and just a heads up its getting pretty nasty out there obviously depends which tracks you are planing on but tracks like Alcorns and Pinnacle would probably be out of the question we were out there in a GU and GQ twin locked 37's ect.. and the above tracks are getting hard running that sort of gear. If cars on your trip were running 33s with lift ect.. tracks like stumpy and pole track would be a fair challenge.

Cheers

Thanks for the heads up, that was one of the tracks I was going to look at so good to know. Might avoid it for the first time out there.

You could try the easy line of Alcorns but it also is getting nasty and has some off camber angles you would be right in your setup but other people on your trip probably not. Also You would be right to drive pinnacles and would be a good drive in your car but again if you get other cars on your trip running 33s and IFS would probably be a bit of winching.

Cheers

Nothing wrong with a bit of winching lol. Probably start on some of the "tamer" tracks and see how the day goes. As you say not everyone's going to have 35" + tyres etc.

Nice GQ by the way.

I don't plan to do the really hard stuff there on this trip. As described this trip should be mostly moderate with some difficult parts (Not 37" territory). First trip there, and I have to take it easy anyway until I've done the Simpson Desert (Madigan Line) trip I have coming up shortly.

Good stuff! Great to see some more people running trips and giving it a shot in places they haven't been.

Alcorns chicken track is tough! We did it in March and it had me inching forward with a great spotter - Matt86 - and I got there without winching. It's the hardest chicken track I've seen!

Soil Pit Track and Stumpy are great for a good challenge on 33s. Awesome ruts and off camber stuff that will test you.

Hi Matt, I'm looking to go to Cobaw on the June long weekend. Would you have any track info as I have only been there once. There will be a variety of Vehicles from stock to not and would like to have a bit of something for everyone. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Cheers

Unfortunately our trip was cut short, as I had a brake line fail which swiftly resulted in no brakes. Weather plays a big part in how hard these track will be, but from what we did I can tell you this:
Where Smiths Track and Ridge Road join is a nice car park type area, good for airing down. Smiths Track is a nice and fairly easy start. Alcorns Track (W > E) will be doable by most vehicles (Probably not suitable for 100% stock vehicles though). Avoid Alcorns Track (E > W) and Pinnacle Track for the stock vehicles. Awesome driving out there, and I'll certainly be out there again soon.
From what I've read / heard, (Haven't personally driven) Googies Fireline should be pretty good for most vehicles. Stumpy and Soil Pit track may be suitable also. Croziers Track and the other Fireline Tracks should be good too.
Sorry I can't be more help than that though.
