Haunted Stream and Youtube Video making about the history of the area MEDIUM

Hi we will be meeting at Deptford camping area (on the Barnsdale side of the river) some time after 2.00pm and camping for two nights, I will be making a youtube video about the history on the long forgoten town, from there we will be moving up to Stirling on Haunted Stream for one or two nights to camp, I will be making a youtube video on the history of the town and how it stands in our history, from there I will be driving up Haunted Stream track, on the way home I hope to go by Billy Goat Bluff Track if I can. One of the youtube video I will be making is on "How not tobe a dickhead 4x4er" along in line with how to crap in the outback style. You are welcome to join me. As you may not know making videos take time and we may have to stop from time to time along the way.

Hi Jim, got your email and replied, like Dave, i too can do the weekends only at the moment after having a fair time off work, all of Feb and March and just got back (desk bound at the moment, M-F) Would be keen to join. cheers hoddz

Afaik a large section of the haunted stream track has been closed for a couple of years. The fun section with all the river crossings. I was looking at doing it last year, can't remember where I read that though. Would be worth checking with the DEPI.

Thats true, rumor is funding has been made available to work on repair and eventually reopen at some stage. Thinks i got as far as Dogtown over the summer from the east end. still nice trip and two good trout!!

The latest update from DEWLP Gippsland is that the Haunted Stream track is now open. Here is the post they put on their FB page
"Forest Fire Management Victoria Gippsland is pleased to announce that the repair work to the Haunted Stream Track has been completed.
The track will be open to the public from Monday 10 April until the seasonal gate closure is enacted after the Queen's Birthday long weekend.
This opening will allow visitors to use the track over the Easter long weekend.
Repairs to the track have included filling in the large bog holes and replacing a collapsed log fill crossing with a ford.
Forest Fire Management Victoria staff will be patrolling the area regularly to ensure that the investment into the repair of the track is not compromised by inappropriate use of vehicles.
Any signs of intentional or major damage to the track surface by vehicles will result in the gates being locked prior to the seasonal closure."

So access should be ok if the weather holds out. The below link for the DEWLP track closures shows that the full Haunted stream track is open. I'll upload a screen shot of the map in the Photos section.

Yep the Track is open and I'm making a "are you a dickhead 4x4er" with DEWLP when I'm up there if all go's to plan.

Drove the Dawson city track over the weekend and also heard from another 4wdriver that the Haunted Stream is now open. It was pretty wet from what we saw. . Found a great little spot to camp at Deptford. Drive past teh designated areas and there is a track to your right ( depending on which way you come where you cross the river onto a hidden exit before coming to an amazing camp with a great firepit and you'll most likely be by yourself

HI Jim,

Looks like I will be able to make Saturday for the Haunted stream trip. I am a photographer and I will bring along my DJI Inspire 4K drone and I also have a handheld DJI OSMO that will shoot in 4K as well. Cant promise that I will be there as work is intermittent but at this stage looks good.

Me too, work commitments means no time off for me I'd have love to have been on this trip as the history is just as interesting as the drive.

Hi Jim,

When you say you are staying at Stirling are you referring to the junction of Haunted Stream, Five mile spur track and Stirling track in the camp area?

I might be able to make it Friday night, I will see. Its all go for Saturday though if I can get there Friday.

I am trying to entice the missus to come too, what was the plan at Dawson City? I was thinking continue on to Dargo, maybe have lunch/tea there?

Hi Dave I be camping at the Stirling old town site, and I will be making my way over to Dargo and If I can I do the Billy Goat Bluff Track on my way home this will depend on how long I be in Haunted Stream making the video.

Hi Dave it would be good to see you there, I will be making a few different video's on this trip. It will be good to have some 4x4 trip member's in the footage, I hope we have a dry time but who knows, I'm am looking for some footage of Deptford including the Deptford Cemetery site and again I need footage of Stirling and the Stirling Cemetery site, if I can get some I won't say no to any footage that I can get, I have one of my drones with me and hope to get some footage.

Hi Jim, Just did a run up the Haunted from the Omeo Hwy end. Mixed bag of weather but humid most of the day plus thunder storms ! The big hill out of dog town was a challenge!!and lots of traffic!!! Where is the best place to meet Saturday? Dawson City ? cheers Hoddz

I can not make it on Friday night but I can on Saturday morning early.

You say you want to meet up at the old sterling site, I have been through Haunted Stream many times and the only (Old Sterling) site I know of is at the junction of Haunted Stream, Five mile spur track and Stirling track, is this where you want to meet up on Saturday morning? if so I can be there around 8AM. Dogtown is about 6KM along from Sterling and is at the junction of Moomba Spur Track and Haunted stream, there is still a lot of old (rusty, broken) machinery around this area.

At Dawson most people go out via Dawson City Track, this is normally good but can get slippery when wet. If we are going across to Dargo we use Boomerang Spur Track, Mt Baldhead Rd then Jones rd which joins the Dargo Rd just North of Dargo.

The track from the Alpine HWY to Sterling is normally pretty good, it does have some large (I mean LARGE) drop offs on the side of the track at times.
I have worked with a guy that worked in Sterling about 10 years ago. He was part of a claim that attempted to pull out more gold. The issue is the cost of getting it out not that there is no gold there. The plan failed after 12 months work. Many get the remains of this mixed up with the real Stirling as they are both in similar areas. I have been trying to get hold of him so I can find out where this is exactly but as of yet I could not find him..

We would love to do Billy Goats with you. I would like to get there before sunset and shoot sunset up there. I have been there many times but never at sunset, I think that would be a great shoot.

Hi Dave I be at the old Town site of Stirling till about 09.00, we will be using CB ch 10. I will be making Video all the way up the Stream, so I be stopping and staring a fare bit, I have not worked out the way I got from Dawson but I will be making a video there about the murder that happened there.

From there we can work the way we go. I'm hopping to do Bill Goat early in the morning, I would love to fly the drone up there if there to get the early morning fog, I'm hope to camp at the start on the track on Saturday night. I have been on the Billy Goat Track more times than I can remember but every time it's one of the best tracks.

Hi I be at the old Town site of Stirling making a Video about the murder that happened there till about 09.00, we will be using CB ch 10. From there I be taking my time up the Stream if you are behind you should be able to catch up, I will be stopping and starting alone the way the video. I have no idea of the time frame of when we will be at Dawson City, but if you want we can meet you there.

Gday Jim, Ill make my way via Deptford or even Engineers Rd and come into Stirling on Five Mile Spur track. ill come up on channel around then. Coming in via Tambo crossing end is too slow going. The large hill climb outside Dogtown proved a challenge for many on Saturday, with rain and plenty of mud and very greasy!! many had to winch up.

Hi Allan I been working on the content of the Video's for 6+months and have found out some very amazing things about the area lot's of murders, lot's of hold up's and some amazing people. I will let 4x4trip know when I got them up.

HI Jim,

I am very sorry I am not going to be able to make it. My Land rover over heated today taking a load of wood home. The radiator has nearly given up, I doubt I will get one before the weekend. It is ok to get around town but I would be very stressed to take it to such a remote place. Very sorry mate and I was looking forward to this.

Yep I put a Deptford youtube video up https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A31ZO-22Ca0 and I'm working on the Haunted Stream one and will have it up soon, I ended up on my own but when I say I'm going apart from death or 4x4 break down I'm there. I put a ding in the left door but hey that's all part of it.
