Walhalla Weekender MEDIUM

Walhalla, VIC

See more trips

Another weekend up to the fantastic Walhalla area. There is a amazing variety of tracks available, steep ascents/descents, river crossings, huts to see etc etc. I have rated this trip as medium, but there will be a few hard sections on some of the tracks, so all vehicles must have as a minimum; 31" tyres (A/T's or muddies), basic recovery gear, plus a tarp for river crossings if vehicle does not have a snorkle.  A couple of the tracks we will drive include Deep Ck 1 & 4, Fultons Creek, Trig and a few others such as Tamboon, Beadmores etc if time permits. The 1st 4 tracks are ones that are 'locked in' weather permitting on the Saturday.

It would be preferred if all of those who wish to come arrive on the Friday, whether it be during the day or early evening, (must arrive before 8pm at caravan park). For those who able to take the Friday off and arrive early, we may go for a short drive for a couple of hours that afternoon, or have a look around the Walhalla township, after setting up camp but we can make that decision closer to the trip date. I also plan to have a meal at the Erica Pub on the Friday evening, (the steaks are amazing), so if interested let me know, as I will have to make a booking. The pub is a 200 metre walk from the caravan park.

I have booked 4 powered sites at the Erica Caravan Park under my name, (meaning 3 available as I have already taken 1...wink). Full details about the caravan park with cost/phone number etc etc will be in attached file. When/if you ring up to book a site, please mention the sites booked by Allan McIntyre and if they have been taken, the caravan park owners have noted that a few more sites maybe required. Please note: CASH ONLY for payment. For those who wish to free camp at the likes of O'Tooles etc, feel free to do so and we will make arrangements to meet at a designated point on the Saturday morning for the full day of 4wding. Sunday will be a leisurely pack up before heading home.

In regards to fuel, Moe is the last place to top up with 'motion lotion'. I anticipate the 4wding/low range component of the trip will be aprox 150- 200 klms at most and with Moe being 30 odd kays from Erica, a good guide is having enough fuel to cover 300 klms over the weekend from Moe back to Moe. Everyone will need to be self sufficent with food/drinks etc and please have some warm clothing as it does get cool at night. In regard to campfires at the caravan park, there is a firepit at the small camp kitchen and if we do want a fire around our camp area, we will need to bring our own fire drum, if anyone has one. It would be preferred if everyone can bring a small bag of firewood, either from Bunnings etc or some that you may have at home.

At this stage, I am limiting this trip to 7 vehicles as I will be inviting a friend who lives in Morwell. If he is unable to attend, I will increase the numbers up to 8. This should be a great weekend and I am hopeful that some of you are keen to take part in this trip. For those who have not been to Walhalla; you will not be disappointed.

PS: This is a family type trip, so please bring your partners/children and access to the caravan park for vans/camper trailers is just off the bitumen road. Any questions, feel free to ask.

As Martin said, come up after work Big Kev. As long as you arrive before 8pm all will be good as Saturday is the big day of 4wding. As said earlier, some of us who arrive earlier on the Friday may go for a drive, but not locked in concrete. You may miss dinner at the pub though, but no big deal.

Talking about the pub, those who are coming up early Friday let me know over the next few weeks if you are keen for a pub meal on the Friday night. Martin has informed me that he and Rosita are in for a pub meal. Also, how many have booked into the caravan park?.

I booked 4 sites Matt and said everyone coming will ring up to either book one of the 4 sites I reserved or book another site. I presume Alex took one of the sites I booked, so that leaves 2, if that makes sense. In other words, everyone needs to ring up and book.

Martin, they often dont answer their phone during the day as they are out cleaning toilets/grounds etc. They generally return calls, if not give them a call before 8pm tonight or before 10am in the morning.

Yes Dutchy ring the park to confirm. I got in the shit with them one time due to someone in our group not doing the right thing from a trip sometime back, and dont want it to happen again.

BTW, Gazza said he is probably going to camp at Little O'Tooles or O'Tooles.

Yep 20 spots if you like to do some 'bonding' with your neighbours Martin...lol. Trip is still a month away and as I said in the trip description, if the cost/restrictions of the caravan park dont appeal, no issue if some of you wish to free camp elsewhere. I'll just put in my 2c worth in with a couple of options.

1. O'Tooles is a fair drive, especially for those who wish to go to the pub for dinner on the Friday night. It is also a reasonable drive to meet the rest of us at the 1st track on the Saturday.

2.Those who are 'tenting' could split the costs at the caravan park, as there is a couple of biggish non powered sites; one near the camp kitchen and one up the back. I will find a pic.

3. Coopers Creek is an option for those who do wish to free camp and allows freedom for Dutchy's dogs. Not a big drive from the pub or Walhalla & on the way to our 1st track.

Not fussed what everyone else wants to do but I will be staying at caravan park, but is a bit of a shame that we may not all be together for the 'bush TV' at night.

Not wrong Dutchy, the park manager is a total ass, I just ignore him because it is a good location close to tracks and the pub.
Any chance of leaving the fur babies at home to remove that complication?
Would be great if we were all camping at the one location

Yes Dutchy, like Matt, many find him a prick. To be honest, I havent had a issue with him, except the time I previously mentioned, and in reality he was within his rights to get a bit angry. I know another member of this forum, who has been there before with me got in the sh!t, but that was because a few in his group didnt stop at the office. He does like a drink and that is when he can get a bit narly.

Cheryl and I stayed there when Kelvin run a trip leaders discussion at O'Tooles and I had a good chat to him the night before the event. He admitted he can get narly and be a so called prick at times, but he said he just gets sick of some people who come to the park and think they can do whatever they like and not abide by what are reasonable rules and conditions.

As Matt said, it would be great if we all were together for both nights and Dutchy, before you make a final decision on your camping arrangements, give them a call and explain the dog thing, and see what they say.

Rubber is always better for 4wd applications, poly bushes are good for race track and road use although have heard some good reports about the super pro blue bushes, definitely do not use standard red or yellow polly bushes.

Bloody 4wd's; always cost us $$$$.

Rang caravan park today and was told all of the group have booked in with the exception of Dutchy; thanks everyone. Luckily for us the bike groups are not there on our weekend.

BTW, if there are any tracks, other than the ones I have already locked in, that some are keen on driving, yell out as I will see if I can include them in the Saturday route, or we could possibly do a couple on the Friday arvo before hitting the pub. Was thinking that some might be interested in heading to Coopers Creek, cross the Thomson River and make our way to Bruntons Bridge before heading back to camp via the Walhalla township on the Friday arvo. Anyway, food for thought.

When asking today how many had booked, I asked about Dutchy's dog situation. I mentioned they are all well behaved etc etc but Wicky didnt sound too keen and said they would have to be on leads at all times in the park.

To be honest Dutchy, I think you maybe be better off, or more importantly the dogs, by camping somewhere close by. There are quite a few places close by, Coopers Creek is one that comes to mind. Again your call as plenty of time to decide what you and Jacki want to do.

Sorry Dutchy, I replied before reading your post. If you look at the pic of the park you will see Macca's bus down the end. That would be the best spot and the sites I booked are the ones close by; (you will see my paj and our old camper in the pic)

Again, all you can do is ring and ask and hopefully you speak to Wicky as she is more understanding than grumpy old Fred. Just be perfectly honest and hopefully you will get a favourable response.

The sites I booked are about 50-100 mtrs from the toilet block.

i'll give it a shot.... not very hopeful though. They're probably worried that once they allow it once..... i'll have to look at other options too if they say no, camping is as much for the dogs as for us.... This weekend i'll be packing and doing last preparations for my NZ hiking trip...

Sorry Gazza, I did say that Dutchy had the 5 dogs so not a good idea to say 2 of them are yours. I got the impression it was the number of dogs in the group, not necessarily who owned them.

Did some checking of camp areas close by and a few dont allow dogs, ( Abefeldy Bridge camping area) and the one Gazza mentioned, Sennis, also has a no dog policy. Again, if Dutchy decides to free camp, I think Coopers Creek might be the best option that is close or alternatively the likes of O'Tooles or maybe Walhalla Gardens. Rawson Caravan Park allows dogs as does Caringal Scout Camp which are both aprox 15 minutes from Erica but there is a cost.

Anyway, we will wait and see how Dutchy went with the caravan park.

I'll grab some maps on the weekend and look for options, including the one you mentioned Allan. The half deaf owner hadn't heard my off lead comment, but the female voice in the back ground did.... Anyway, that's why I don't do caravan parks...

Yep not wrong, they cost big time, I am scaring myself with the $$ I am considering throwing into my next project.
Dutchy, have you spoken the park managers yet?
Aha !!! Another convert to the LS family ???
Don't worry about the $$$ it's paid back in smiles per gallon.
No don't be silly, I already have a nice V8 that makes me smile...
Its even worse, jump ship, get a 70 series cruiser and add, auto, Jmax diff and coil conversion and all the rest to make it a good 4by for our tourer

Ahhh, a Toyota man.
Welcome to the fold, yeah, a few mods, take out a few Toyota bits and you end up with a 1/2 decent truck. Sounds like a big bux project, but what the heck !

Might be a good discussion around the 'bush TV'.

Dutchy, there is a little campsite called Thomson Bridge that you might think is ok. Is in between Erica & Walhalla, not right on the river but doesnt get some of the 'ferrels' that go to Coopers and O'Tooles.

Well only a couple of weeks to go and long range forecast still looks good.

As mentioned earlier, I plan to leave Emerald about 10ish, so anyone interested in meeting at the Caltex Longwarry for the drive to Erica, feel free to join us. I anticipate us being at the servo around 10.45-11.00am.

I am planning to go for a drive Friday arvo leaving the caravan park about 2pm to head down to Coopers Creek and Bruntons Bridge. For those who havent seen the bridge, it is well worth a look. The loop back to Erica should only take a couple of hours at most as the tracks we will take are easy; but there is one close to Coopers Creek that used to be good,(well it was a couple of years ago), that we could have a look at.

Am looking at a couple of options for the Saturday drive that will include the 4 tracks I have mentioned, but am also looking at a couple of others that I either havent driven for a number of years, or not driven at all. Am sure I will have more to add over the next week or so.

We'll leave Silvan around 9.00-ish Alan will see you at the caravan park Friday lunchtime or so allowing for a grub stop and fuel top up. I've done the CC-BB drive too, its a nice loop. Wonder if anyone will be canoeing down the river.......
Car's already filled with juice, rear pinion seal replaced ready to roll !!!!

Dont rush to get there too early Alex as I think 'check in' is after midday. I will ring to confirm. No doubt you took out another 2nd mortgage to fill the cruiser...lol.
Agree the CC/BB loop is a good one but will find a couple of pics that might wet the appetite for the others who have not been there.

About time you got the camper sorted Gazza so you and Julie can become 'soft' campers like the rest of us. If ARB made a camper, am sure Kev would be 1st in line to buy one.

Not sure when we will get there, have just had a bit of a barney with a company I am currently contracting too, all sorted once I told them how it was and if they want my services that is how it will be, they eventually saw the light but it was touch and go for a few days so I don't want to push the boundaries to far by taking a day off if we are busy. Bloody work shits me!!

That's a 'bugger' Matt, but no big deal if you cant get there till later on the Friday. Need the $$$ to pay for your 'new project' remember....lol.

Have added a couple of pics of river crossings at Brunton Bridge & Coopers Ck to hopefully wet a few appetites.

If it wasn't for the next car build and the next 2-3 years of trips we want to do they would have been told where they can shove their work...
Allan if you want to wet appetites there should be some pics of the Disco floating sideways down stream or the headlights disappearing into the murky dark,
"na its not very deep" was the call from memory or "UM MMM not that bad you can follow" ;-)

Yes, I should find those videos Matt but it might put some off...lol

So the Toyota drives nearly as smoothly as a pajero now Gazza...lol.

Hope everyone had a good Easter break and are looking forward to the trip. Nothing much to update, but was speaking to a guy at work who drove Deep Creek 1 over the weekend and both he and his mate slashed a tyre on the ledge coming out of the creek.

Neil, no problem meeting you at the Caltex on Friday morning, but there is a possibility that Cheryl & I may head up on the Thursday. If we do I will let you know, but I am sure some of the other crew will be willing to meet you at the servo Friday morning.

Just a small update. Cheryl & I are going to head up Thursday morning, so Neil hopefully some of the crew will meet you at the servo Friday morning. Also contacted the caravan park and Fred said they are happy for our group to arrive anytime from 11am on Friday. Double checked re; fires and as mentioned earlier, we can have a fire in the fireplace at the camp kitchen but if we want a fire around our campsites, they are happy for us to do so, but we must have a fire drum of some description so that grass is not burnt.

Am about to start to plan a route for Saturday; hope all are ok with a reasonably big day.

All good Neil. As I said earlier, am sure some of the guys will be happy to meet you at the servo if need be.

Am looking at buying a fire pit as it would be much better if we can have a fire close to our camps. If the forecast is right, I think dust might not be an issue as they are saying rain from Friday until Wednesday then fine from then, but the nights might be 'coolish'.

Not long to go now.

Matt, will let you know re; fire pit as I bought one off 'Fleabay' tonight so hopefully you wont have to bring yours.

Hopefully you can get the Friday off and I understand you are not bringing the camper???????
20 Apr 2017
Matthew (discomatt)
Just going to tent it, 5 minute set up and pack up, easy to dry out when we get home if it rains, the camper can be PITA to get dry this time of year....
It's only a short trip and not much time sitting around camp so no point in all the extra work with the camper...
After the Border track and Big Desert trip Lisa has realised how easy a tent can make things. I have added a few additions to the Disco to make camping without the trailer a lot easier so for short weekenders it's now the Black Wolf tent.
I was thinking of making it a week trip but decided that I should do the smart thing and not tell work to get stuffed, for the time being ;-)
21 Apr 2017
Trip Leader Allan (allanmac) Premium Member
Probably a smart move; not telling the boss to 'get stuffed' Matt. Spoke to the pub today to increase numbers as mate from Morwell cancelled his other trip to join us. 9 vehicles now, but I have a feeling Dutchy will pull out due to the dog situation. Anyway, the guy at the pub said it had been raining all day with it not expected to stop until Wednesday. If that does happen , could make it 'interesting' on the likes of Trig and the Deep Ck tracks plus with luck the rivers may rise slightly.

Yes Big Kev, pub booked for 6pm. Will be interesting to see if the rivers do rise over the next few days and how slippery Trig Tk will be.

Matt, no need to bring your drum as I bought a fire drum the other day. Just a reminder to everyone to bring some firewood to ensure we have enough for the 'bush TV' on 2 nights.

Great to hear you are still planning to come Dutchy. I guess the 'dogs on leads' is the issue with staying at Erica, but to be honest I can understand the policy as the majority of caravan parks have the same rule. Coopers Creek is not far away and we will be going past on Saturday morning for the full day of 4wding so we arrange to meet you. Another option is a small campground on the left just before you cross the bridge heading to Walhalla. It is called Thomson Bridge campground, not right on the river, but maybe suitable.

Yes Matt, a lot of rain overnight and as Gazza said, 'We wont have any dust'...lol

Hey folks a couple of questions.

1. Who wishes to go for the Friday arvo drive?.
2. And those who do, do you have a preference of either doing Coopers Creek/Brunton Bridge loop back to camp via Walhalla or something else?.

Dont want to do anything too hard and long during the arvo to ensure we back to the pub on time and 2ndly, Saturday is going to be a big day.....

So let me know today if you are happy to 'go with the flow' and/or have any particular track/tracks you might want to drive; no promises though.
25 Apr 2017
Maarten (DUTCHD)
We'll be late arrivals regardless... Won't be leaving home till 5. As for Saturday, I'll go with the flow. If stuff gets a bit full on for the passengers we'll just abort somewhere and let the big kids play!

Thanks mate,
Lifting 21x 63Kg batteries in one day is a bit much.
The problem is that you dont feel it straight away but getting out of bed the next day feels crap.
Was hoping it would get better but helped someone else with lifting 6 batteries in his van and then i knew it would not be good.
Really wanted these muddies to have a workout that is why i bought them :(

Dutchy, hope you get to read this, but I will speak to the owners at the park when we arrive tomorrow. If you want me to ask, and you are happy to stay in the park, let me know before 9.30am tomorrow. I will then contact you via mobile with hopefully a positive answer.

Sad news guys.... after a 2 week fight with ups and downs, vet treatments, blood tests, xrays, ultrasounds and even surgery, I had to have my beautiful big boy Ody put to sleep. Stomach issues that stayed unresolved, intestinal issues that we were trying to manage, neurological issues with the legs, possible cancer in several organs.... We tried to fix those issues we though we could, but when a Lab doesn't eat by choice, it's pretty bad. When after some initial improvements with the legs last week, surgery on the intestines didn't fix what we hoped it would and from Sunday onwards he slowly declined again, to the point where i couldn't justify to keep trying. At 13, with increasingly wobbly back legs and existing health issues, the 2 weeks of events made me decide to see my boy out. Too early and i'll miss his happy face so much.... Glad he'd enjoyed the skipworth weekend, a shame he (and us) missed this one...

So sorry to hear Dutchy. Ody was a lovely dog and I know you will miss him terribly.
BUT, in the end it is the best result for him as am sure you would not want to see him suffer anymore. Cheryl sends her condolences also.
