Champion Spur Challenge MEDIUM

Woods Point, VIC

See more trips

Hi everyone, looking for a few bods in late March to have a 2-night trip out the back of Woods Point area. A bit of exploring and lots of time in low range.

This trip is  for confident drivers who know their rigs and have wheel placement ability and can tackle a steep hill based on their knowledge of what they or their car can do comfortably.  It is not planned as stop, bum out of the seat,  'can someone guide me or what gear should I be in' on hills that can be traversed by a well set up car and experienced driver.

Please don't join if this might be out of your depth as there's ground to cover and I want to keep moving and be back at camp for an elbow bend way before dark. You will need recovery gear, a winch is a bonus but not a definite requirement, you will need fuel for a full day's 4WD plus Woods Point and return, good reliable car with maintenance done BEFORE we leave and A/T tyres as a minimum.

Anyway, rough plan is make your way to Woods Point Friday afternoon / evening and meet at Comet Flat campground, with Scotts reserve as plan B if Comet is unavailable.  Saturday morning , go up Old Coach Road, along Webber Spur Track (with optional drive straight down to the river via the old track, you need 33's and 2" lift minimum to clear the ledges) or stay on the main track and meet at the bottom, cross the Goulburn and on to Champion Spur Track.

Traverse along Champion, which I haven't done, to Mt Selma Road, back to Walhalla Road.  Head south to Violet Town Track, drive along through Red Jacket and Blue Jacket, stop at Jerico for a look at the diversion tunnel and cemetary, then up Jerico track to Walhalla Road, and down Noble Spur back to Comet Flat.

I've done all these tracks except Champion so that part is unknown if anyone joins who has done it great, you're welcome.

Saturday night, beer around the fire and exaggerate how steep the hills were and then de-camp Sunday and head home, might go back down Jerico and out via Casper Creek it s a nice drive with a great view of the Thompson.   Self sufficency for food and water is preferred although there's a pub meal at Woods Point if that takes your fancy.

Hope you can join look forward to seeing you. I'll be leaving Silvan around 4.00pm on the Friday in the slurper if anyone want to tag along in convoy, having a burger fro grub in Warburton on the way.

Hi Tom, not on this one - we'd be pushed to get anything over hub depth, especially in March unless there's freak rains!

Just a heads up on Champion Spur, i've not been down there for a while but it was overgrown as hell the last time i did it!

Big time pin stripes, so anyone who is overly attached to their paintwork or hates the sound of nails on a chalk board, you won't be happy ;)

Had to clear bout 10 fallen trees, so i would recommend carrying at least one chainsaw.

Its a decent track tho, there is a small water crossing but nothing to worry about this time of year.

Have fun boys.

Thanks El, you might have made the same turn that Al (Big Pig) did and took the Alps walking track by mistake..... It parallels Champion in a couple of spots, hope we can find a less-scratchy way through, thanks for the chainsaw tip. If we had a 200 Series though we could send that through for track widening duties......

Hey all, does anyone have small chainsaw we can take for the weekend for any possible track clearing chores and as a handy firewood gathering tool ?

Cheers.

Thanks all with the saw(s) :-)
I've just changed driveline oils - both diffs, stinky job, transfer case and gearbox all renewed I try to do this every year as cheap insurance, but it's still $150 worth of oils grrrrr.

No worries I'll speak to the missus tonight about Toolangi. Every time I got there something goes wrong - last time I punched my sill up over the door and couldn't open the door, and the door then got a dent in it from the sill to add insult.....grrrr.
