I have always wanted to do the Border Track, will try and be one of the first groups on the track when it opens. We will drive to one of the camp grounds ( possibly Pine Hut) on the Friday ready to be on the track when it opens in the morning. we will spend 2 days on the Border Track which should be a fairly easy pace. Drive back to Melbourne on the Monday

Is a dune / sand flag a requirement out here?

Are you planning on starting around Serviceton/Telopea Downs? Lived in Kaniva for a couple of years so know that area well. Won't be able to make this trip but there's a fair bit of fun to be had along that track and especially when you get up in the Big Desert area and some of those sand dunes are a challenge!

I don't think a sand flag is a must, if you have one bring it. The border track is one way so there shouldn't be anyone coming the other way, I have one and I will have it with me so if we go into an area where it's needed I'll be up front so that should be good enough.

I dug up a couple of photos from April 2 years ago when I took a spin in the Pajero up the Border Track from the Serviceton end. I put it on Imgur here http://imgur.com/a/U5Oqp (hopefully this works).

Sounds like a great trip Dave - wish I had the time I'd love to join in!

Fees to pay as you go in too, $10.00 on an honesty system. We did it late last year and all self-registered, of course, just as well, over the 1st dune there were 2 lovely lady Park Rangers waiting to check our rego details.........

Ah bugger, go out for one night and work first thing in the morning and its full, GRRRR, any chance on extending numbers? its a really easy drive with big camp grounds and up to 8 or 9 would be easy to manage...

Last time Dave tried to organise this, like this time, there was a lot of interest initially and then everyone cancelled and we ended up only being 2 vehicles (so we went elsewhere), so I am sure if you keep your eyes peeled some spots might become available.

We all need to get a vehicle pass go to the link.

Also I checked out Pine Hut Soak and looks like we may have to pre book at $12 per vehicle is everyone cool with the costs.

It doesn't display well on my phone...so do we need a 2 month pass minimum? Is Pine Hut the only place we need to pay to camp?

Yes just 2 month holiday pass

I found the following earlier - seems to be a single entry pass?

Can also book online for the night at Pine Soak Hut:

Yes pine hut is the only camp, so you are looking at $40 vehicle pass and $12 camping per vehicle
06 Mar 2017

You can pay for Pine hut at the entry into the camp ground and from memory no need to pre book

I'm pretty sure you can sign up and pay onsite before you go into the national park, pretty sure it's $10 per vehicle. Not sure about camp.. But let us know what dates were camping at pine hut so I can book.

31st march you can pay at the camp site, I tried to book online but won't allow it unless you have an entry permit number.

If we're going to be in the park Friday Saturday Sunday and Monday... Might as well get 2 months pass!

I'm happy to get the 2 months pass if it'll. Make everything easier and let me book Campsite and everything in advance.

Where will we be staying when doing border track? Any Campsites that need booking? Or will we be bush camping?
06 Mar 2017
Trip Leader Dave (Stoops) Premium Member
Yeah you are right it is $10 entry but can't find how long that covers you for. We will be in the park for at least 2 days maybe 3 but the second night will probably be Red Bluff which is in Victoria
06 Mar 2017
Thurstain (Tcm9669) Premium Member
Ok, so I called the number on that page 08 8580 1800 and asked her about the $10 entry fee. She said it's a one entry fee and should cover us for the period that we are in there. The $10 looks like it's a PER ENTRY charge, not per day. She said when you book, in the Date section select your date of entry (I think for us will be 1st April) and that should cover us.

Also from what she said, this is now ONLINE ONLY as of Jan - she said there are no facilities up there anymore for us to sign in before entry. However we can go to Berri info center and pay there if we wish to (as per their website)

Sorry I thought I had posted this in general discussion but instead it was a pm to Francois
, I don't like to plan a trip like this down to every turn and stop, it's not how I roll as I like "play it by ear" but a rough plan is. Day 1 Calder Park - Sea Lake for lunch - Pinnaroo to fuel up - camp at Pine Hut Soak Day 2 Border Track - probably camp at Red Bluff or somewhere on the Border Track. Day 3 Border Track - I'm thinking of checking out some camps in Wail State Park which is the East end of Big Desert Day 4 Look around Wail and make our way home. Of course plans can change due to breakdowns, recoveries or just having too much fun to leave a certain spot.

Pine Hut Soak is inside the park so we will be entering the park on 31st March
07 Mar 2017
Thurstain (Tcm9669) Premium Member
Yeah I understand and I don't expect a turn by turn plan.. No point in that as things change anyway. Just rough dates for booking.

So I'll book Campsite and park entry for 31 March. No worries. Looking forward to it.
07 Mar 2017
Matthew (discomatt)
You don't need to book camp sites, Pine hut is the only camp site that has fees, there is a honesty box and registration area just out of the camp ground, as far as a Park pass goes I will get Saturday and Sunday and that will cover it as far as I am concerned.

goal 1, no damage, no breakages. I personally don't understand people that do hard tracks and say they had a great day and bent this and broke that.

Na there won't by any winching on border Track, Mat and I were talking about Ellis Track which we are doing this Saturday
08 Mar 2017
Matthew (discomatt)
Not this trip mate, a private trip to Ellis Track this Saturday, no winching will be needed for Border track, it is a easy trip and only turns medium if you want to tackle some harder lines up some of the sand dunes or if your silly enough to tackle the bog holes at the southern end after rain which also have bypass tracks

Was the from the locker issue you had on ellis?

Mine is all done. New tyres, new oil + filter, new fuel filter, new air filter, fridge cable was giving me issues but should be fixed now HOPEFULLY. Might try to install intercooler and LED headlights on the weekend but see how I go...

Also bought a front locker, but no way I'll fit it in time for this trip. I think a drinking and drug addiction would be cheaper than 4wding addiction LOL

yeah I'll see if mine fits in, hope we come across some Mallee root
30 Mar 2017
Matthew (discomatt)
Should be able to find Mallee roots, last time in Big Desert we found heaps and they make for a great fire.
Speaking of fires I have just done some research and there are no fires allowed until the 15/4 in that area so we have a cold first night. Make sure your not relying on a fire for your cooking or its a cold meal as well...
I will see if our chain saw will fit but its a loooong time since it has been the better half and me without the camper trailer so not sure how everything is going to fit...

Dave you will be fine at Red Bluff for a fire. According to Matt, you are basically doing the same trip we did 2 years ago to the day.

The quarantine station at the border will check your car/fridges etc so dont take the chance thinking you might get through unchecked. Supermarket at Pinaroo is not that good, but will have the basic fruit/veggies.

Hope you all have a great trip and get plenty of pics. Will be interesting to see/hear if any of the big bog holes at the southern end have any water/mud in them. Easily bypassed if they do. With the rain, hopefully the sand wont be too soft.
