Mt Terrible Hut trip EASY / MEDIUM

Big River State Forest, VIC

See more trips

Planning a day trip to have a squiz at the new Mt Terrible hut rebuilt after beign razed to a crisp after the fires a few years ago.  I've seen some posted images hope they aren't com-generated :-) if anyone has been up there lately and can confirm......

Will be taking an indirect route in the Big River Area to make the most of the day in 4WD.

Planned as an easy to medium trip, suitable for beginners with a capble 4WD, BYO lunch, full tank of fuel from Warburton, GPS navigator with a 'home' function in case the group has to split.

It will be a full day in the forest expected to be back at Warburton around 5.00-6.00pm.

No SUV's Must have minimum A/T tyres and low range plus standard stuff like recovery points straps and shackles etc as there is one spot that's slippery if weather is wet.   Hope to see you there it's a nice photo op.

New hut is actually there then Rick ?
I haven't been up there since the old one was reduced to stumps sticking out of the ground......

Copy and paste this into your browser and you'll see her rebuild on photos. Looking really good, let's hope she survives for many years to come.

Alex, reading your note I think recovery points should read 'required'

Yah, I mean the standard stuff you should have in a capable 4WD - recovery points shackles straps etc.

Not on the route I'm taking unless someone else has a really good knowledge of the tracks in the area.
I'm taking the back tracks to get there and won't be able or waiting for another group to follow our tracks. Way too many turns...... Getting to Mt Terrible is very easy if you stay on the Big River Road and just go up Hope Track / Mt Terrible track but we aren't doing that I have a much more devious plan to make sure we spend most of the day in low range..

Last Wed they were fitting the guttering and getting it ready for the water tank to be installed this week.
They also put in 2 neat picnic tables and a fire pit out front which has been cleared a little to give unspoiled views.
We went via Big River , Frenchman's , No 1 Short cut , Monument Ck , Corn Hill to Ryan's hut and up that way.
Track conditions were great , no trees down and good grip all day , very little water around.
Have fun :)

absolutely fantastic photos Susan, isn't it great that we have some great people in this country to donate all that time restoring those magnificent huts. imagine all the history that this new hut is going to add to the old. I think I will have to visit for a week looks very inviting....

Great job to those involved in the rebuild. I did like the old hut, had character, similar to the ones burnt in Walhalla. The new ones, whilst very nice, just dont seem to have that 'rustic' feel., if that makes sense.

Kev, make sure you see it before it gets trashed and full of graffiti.

If so, there's lots of good sites right on Big River Eli. We might cut down Newmans Track / Danes Spur - which I haven't done- and run along the valley after the hut or even straight down Donald Track- if it's open- which is a bit steeper I went up it many years ago, should be OK. Lots of choices for campsites on the Big River Road from there. Can decide on the day which way to go but I'm heading home have other commitments so can't stay :-(.

Hi everyone, don't forget to BYO lunch and drinks/refreshments for the day, there's no fuel or shops past Warburton so need to be self-sufficient for the day.

Cheers.
