Never been to cobaw so I'm out to tackle the tough ones like Alcorns. I'm going to be a bit savage on this one - if you join and your vehicle isn't set up for it or you can't demonstrate that you've driven REAL hard tracks then I will remove you from the list. I don't want to to waste half the day winching someone out when they aren't properly equipped to take on the challenge in the first place.

I was up on Alcorn Trk about a week ago and broke my tail light, cooked my Clutch and the winch got a very good workout. My mate broke a CV 20m into the track on his GU.
We were both running 33's 2 and 3 inch lifts and both twin locked.
It was harder than it looked on the 4x4 Adventure Club episode. (Considering a Colarado went up).

Depends what line you take on Alcorns, the far left line going up is the hardest. It's a mental track, damage is HIGHLY likely so I wouldn't recommend starting with it. Rigs with 35s, twin lockers and heaps of flex should be right. Get warmed up first and have a good look at it before you choose your lines :)

Avoid googies fireline tk; after the good hill climb it's been destroyed by a tornado. Seriously haha you will be stuck all day clearing it.

In my opinion Cobaw can't be beat for tough tracks, enjoy! 👍😬

We will be filming this as a part of a new highlight for 4wdtrip - we will film 10 iconic hard tracks in Victoria over the year.

Well I guess we will see how the fj goes.. only 33s but 4" and twin locked at least. I've never driven it so it will be an interesting day for sure.

My brother was at cobaws yesterday and did alcorn track on the bikes.
Looking at the footage it is looking rather nastier than it did this time last year.

Dont be misconstrued by the footage of the Colorado, if it's the same footage that i am thinking Kate missed the nasty section up the main part and went to the track on the left.

Either way , these days twin locked, solid axle autos have the advantage here

If you want to film some of Victorias hardest tracks I'm up for taking you to Walking track at toolangi , was up there yesterday and can say it's up there with alcorns and ellis... and I'm meaning the hard lines.

Will be keen to head out some time to see your fj do alcorns track and walking track.
Given your vehicle is Ifs, I'd been keen to see how it mixes it up with the twin locked patrols and cruisers, i know the feeling personally having a highly capable ifs rig and it was always fund heading out with the big boys

Best of luck and I hope you all get home with no damage!
Stay safe fellas.
Cheers
Georgie!

Awesome day out !!!!!!!!!!
Had a ball and Cobaw exceeded my expectations
Thanks to everyone for making it a fun day out.
Now to swop tyres again and do the after trip inspection, I am expecting a few extra dings and scapes under the old girl but hopefully nothing to major...
Looking forward to some photos and video of the days entertainment

Clive (clive22)
Hi Everyone
Great day out, especially for those who love ruts, rocks, side angles and who can live with some dints and scrapes.
Thanks for Winston for running the trip, great map print out/route location at the start.
Cobaw has seen very little maintenance so the tracks are rutted, rocky and tough with lots of cross axling the granite soil produces deep sharp edged ruts.
Anyone talking the tracks needs great flex and/or a locker/TC or two. People with short travel will be stuck. Bring your chainsaw too.

Lots of fun had by me, had to leave at 4pm for family reasons but still got to drive Alcorn's which has developed into a very tough track now (harder than 3 years ago when I drove it), with deep holes next to rock ledges. I took a line which gave me a scary amount of wheel lift at the big rock shelf near the top, which I'll remember for a while.
Put some photos up which give you some idea, but as is the case with photo's it's they make it look easier than it is.
Cobaw may well be the best place at the moment for hard tracks.
Hope every one got home safe without any real damage, 'cause I heard a quite a few nasty scrapes and bangs over the day.
It was great to see everyone helping out getting others through, you need it up there.
Cheers
Clive

Nice photos Clive, thanks for sharing.
I have washed and detailed the car, changed the tyres and given it a going over, yep got a few new scapes and battle scars, ah well that's why I drive an older 4by...
No major damage so all good

Cheers everyone. Saw some great driving yesterday with many comfort levels being pushed.

Alcorns is without doubt totally off its head as a track. The chicken track is not much easier.

I had a good day, learnt more about my vehicle and also about myself. A bit more experience needed before taking on that level of difficulty. And some sliders.

Today was good fun - Soil Pit threw up some really technical and tricky sections for Julius and I. Had a great time.

Thanks to all of you for your assistance across the day. Great drive with great people.

Did anyone drive alcorns (the hard line?) OR did they require winching...
Love this place been going there since 92 and that track has always scared me.as a kid!
20 Feb 2017
Trip Leader Winston (Winston_FJ) Premium Member
3 drove it. Clive, Al and Matt (Patrol). Discomatt and Julius both had very solid attempts but got hung up on rocks. I wasn't game to attempt it without sliders. Coreys pajero- without lockers, despite his great driving just wouldn't have made it up.

winston, loved the pics of your trip
you need to post up on the forum page so everyone can enjoy. alcorns looks harder than i have seen it in the past. did you get any video?

I did. Very busy week away with work will edit it when I get back and write a report too.

Clive drove the hard line the hard way, Matt and Allan drove the hard line but both went the left hand side of the track, Clive went the right and wow what a drive that was, one of the most impressive drives I have ever seen and he was pumped and full of adrenalin when he walked back down.
I was the last car and the surface was ripped up and just couldn't stay on the high line over a rut and with 32's just couldn't clear the rocks, Julius was in the same boat as he has 33's everyone else was on 34, 35 and 37's
