Jamieson/Woods Point Weekender. MEDIUM

Jamieson and Woods Point., VIC

See more trips

Alex has asked me to run a trip that includes driving Black River and Webber Spur tracks. As some already know, there are plenty of other tracks we can drive as well in the area...smiley. I have rated this trip as 'medium' with Black River probably being the hardest track, but I have no doubt that nobody will have any issues, especially if dry.

In regard to the campground, we have the option of either Skipworth or Knockwood Reserve. Both have 'pros & cons'; Skipworth being close to Jamieson for fuel etc and access is via a bitumen Rd. Con is that it can get busy due to its easy access. Knockwood is bigger and doesnt have as many pit dunnies, is closer to Woods Point and generally is not as busy. Disadvantage, for those towing a caravan or camper, is that access is gravel road for about 30 klms from Jamieson. Those who going to attend, please let me know your preference. As my partner will be joining me I will be bringing our caravan, so those who have a van/camper trailer feel free to bring along as there is no issue towing via Mansfield on the Mansfield/Woods Point Rd. Whilst trip is aprox 70 klm longer than the Black Spur/Marysville option to Knockwood, time wise it is slightly shorter if you are towing. Best option to Skipworth, if we choose that location, is via Mansfield/Jamieson.

Saturday the 21st is the day we will be doing all the driving, so if you cannot make it Friday night, dont stress, we plan to head out about 9-9.30am on the Saturday morning. Am sure some might even consider a 'night drive' either the Friday or Saturday nights. Sunday will be a leisurely pack up to head home with some heading back via Big River and others the way they came in; entirely up to you.

Everyone must be self sufficent with supplies re; water/food and fuel. For those without a long range tank try to top up in Jamieson or bring a 20 ltr jerry as no fuel is available in Woods Point. I anticipate the low range component of the trip will be about 100 odd klms.

(FYI, return trip; Mansfield/Knockwood/Mansfield is aprox 150 klms and the BP in Mansfield is open until about 10pm if memory serves me correctly)

In regard to vehicle requirements, as per usual everyone must have basic recovery gear, (shackles, snatchstrap etc) and whilst a winch is preferred, it is not compulsory.

Still a month away, but as most are bringing vans/camper trailers, do you have a preference; Skipworth or Knockwood?

Not fussed where we camp, never had an issue at Skipworth even though many say it gets full of ferals, have never camped at Knockwood so have no opinion.
Up to you mate

Great to see that you and Liza can join us Matt. (How did the job interview go?)

Like you, never have had a problem at Skipworth and as Gazza said, a little easier access for vans. Added bonus is that Jamieson township is close by for fuel/basic supplies if required. As mentioned earlier, Knockwood is closer to the Black River/Webber Spur tracks but it is only about a hours drive (via some 4wd tracks) to get there from Skipworth. Will give it some more thought as imo opinion both are great campgrounds with Knockwood far more likely to be quieter.

I'm not fussed where we camp, I think Skipworth is nicer though will go with whatever the group trend is. Knockwood, never stayed there only driven through, if there's shade then that's good enough too.

To be honest, my preference is Skipworth but I guess it all depends how busy it is.

Great to have you join us Neil; are you bringing your van?. Also, no matter where we camp, we will find a place many many metres away for Kev and Christopher to camp. Some of us know the reason why.

Back in town and as they say; 'when it rains, it pours'. Air conditioner blew up up along with the bloody oven....grrrr.

Anyway, hope all had a great new year. My preference is still Skipworth but if busy will go to Knockwood. As mentioned earlier, I will be heading up mid morning on the Friday and if Skipworth is not busy will stop there and try to reserve spots for everyone. If it is busy/almost full, will continue on to Knockwood. Problem is phone reception is non existent so there is no way I can contact people with the campsite we will stay at. My suggestion is presume we are staying at Skipworth, but if you dont see my paj, you will know we have moved down to Knockwood.

Wasnt the paj aircon, but one at home.

Hope you can get the Friday off Martin. What I hope to do, all going well, is check out Skipworth by 2ish. If all good there, I will head back to Jamieson and send everyone a message saying;"Skipworth it is". If no message, it will mean I have moved onto Knockwood.

Now I have purchased 5 cans of ARB sunshine from the Pakenham ARB store. Now as you all know it can still rain while the sun is shinning, so I have looked on the web and have found a product that is sold by TJM Sunbury. It is what they call NO RAIN SUNSHINE I will pick up 5 cans of this as well and test both. .

Thanks to those for letting me know what time they plan/hope to leave on Friday, I think Alex is working the Friday, so he wont be up to early evening and not sure whether Naomi will head up with Kev/Gazza at this stage,

Still a week away, but weather doesnt look all that flash. Rain forecast, but it will probably be perfect sunshine. Due to possible crap weather, can everyone bring some wood with them so we dont have to go hunting for probable wet stuff.

Well, weather looks better now but still some rain Thursday night and Friday morning; great no dust....hopefully.

As mentioned previously, I plan to be at Skipworth by 2pm and hopefully that will be our camp for the weekend. I am meeting Neil at Yea 11.45am-12 noon and he and family will follow us from there. I know Gazza and Kev are heading up Friday morning also, but guys be aware that there will be little or no mobile reception the route you are taking so I guess you should plan to head straight to Skipworth. Personally, still think it is quicker via Mansfield unless you guys are doing some tracks along the way.

I think Discomatt and Martin are still unsure what time they and their partners are heading up and Naomi said she and the kids wont be up until Friday night. Not sure about Alex and family, think he might be a night arrival if he is working. If you guys can give me some idea of aprox departure time, it would be greatly appreciated.

Again, if we are at Skipworth I will send a text message "Skipworth". If no message, we will head to Knockwood. At both the campgrounds, no rubbish bins etc, so we all have to take our rubbish out. Remember to bring some wood for the nightly fires, along with our 'sense of humours' and no ARB talk!.

Hopefully it will be a great weekend and if anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.

PS: Matt, if raining, DONT set up the trailer where you did the last time it pissed down.

No worries Alex. Text will be sent by 3ish on Friday arvo if we are at Skipworth. Yep, it will be good to catch up again and will show you and the others, time permitting, some of the other tracks around Jamieson.

Agree with that Gazza; especially if you are bringing your camper trailer. If you and Kev decide to go that way and want to meet at Yea, just yell out.

Matthew (discomatt)
We will probably head up early Friday, work is still quiet and there was no joy with the recent job application so still basically on holidays :-)
If ahead of everyone we will either have lunch at Jamieson and wait or head to skipworth and meet people there, will call or TXT if we end up first there

Thanks for that Matt. We might see you on the way as we plan to leave Emerald by 9.30ish.

Allan (allanmac) wrote: Well, weather looks better now but still some rain Thursday night and Friday morning; great no dust....hopefully.

Hi Allan,
Just confirmed my kids will be with there dad this weekend so it's just me and my fur baby if she's allowed....If not i'll make arrangements for her.
Finishing work early so will be up there before 5pm

Trip Leader Allan (allanmac) Premium Member
Thanks Naomi. As we are not in national parks, your 'fur baby' is fine. There is a chance that some of us who arrive early may go for a short drive and if we do, we should be back by 5ish. If we are not just look for Kev's ARB crap laying around camp.

Neil, wondering if you can be in Yea by 11.30am at the latest.?. Is aprox 1 hr 30 mins from Tullamarine, so if you left home by 9.30, you guys would be there with time to spare for toilet stop etc etc.

Are you heading up with Gazza Kev.?. If not, feel free to join us in Yea and then convoy to Skipworth. As I mentioned in reply to Neil, I want to be leaving Yea by 11.30ish, stop at Mansfield to top up with fuel etc and get to Jamieson/Skipworth by 1.30-2.00ish. If it is overly busy, (which I doubt), will then head to Knockwood.

PS Folks, remember to check in. (I know all you guys do it but thought I would just say it...lol)

Great to hear Martin; feel free to meet a few of us in Yea if you like. Mansfield police are not bad imo, they just grab the 'shitebox' gq's and landcruisers/Hiluxs that are totally unroadworthy due to excessive lift/huge tyres, no mudflaps etc.

Nah mate, i have this habit of not sleeping with a man and surely not one that snores loudly.

Ok folks, think we are all organized.

Thanks Neil and Martin re; replies meeting in Yea. Park where you can and have your uhf's on. If you 'google map' Yea you will see there are a few spots available in the main street for those towing campers/caravans.

Kev, all good that you are going with Gazza, so we will see you guys at Skipworth. Looks like Matt & Liza might head up earlier and have lunch at the Jamo pub and meet us at Skipworth.

Added note. For those who havent been to Skipworth, there are plenty of available sites so we dont have to sleep on top of each other. Perfect spot for all the group is just on the right as you drive in. Usually that is one of the 1st areas to get taken, but hopefully no one will be there. If it is taken, it would be good if 'Big Kev' and Gazza, (as I expect them to arrive 1st), could possibly grab the area just as you drive in, (again if no one there), as this would be the best area to have the 'communal fire/get togethers' if we need to spread out in the campground. Have put up a pic of both areas in the photo section.

Thanks Mark. Still hoping Skipworth is the place we stay, but last time I was up there was expecting it to be quiet and it was full of 'grey nomads'. Guess we will play it by ear and I will text the later arrivals, Alex and Naomi, with 'Skipworth' hopefully.

Weather doesnt look too bad now and the expected rain on Friday should be great for the tracks.

Thanks for 'checking in' and look forward to seeing some of you at Yea and the rest at the campground.

(Thanks Kev for letting me know about Christopher. Just makes it easier for us to find you a nice spot to share your snoring with the wildlife).

All good Gazza. If it is gone, it is gone but still plenty of other spots....hopefully.
As you said the Eildon-Jamo road is mainly dirt, but very windy if I remember. did a check and even though from Healesville it is 40 klms shorter in distance, it is aprox 20 mins longer than via Maroondah Hwy etc, and that is not towing. Think it will take a bit longer for Alex towing the camper,

Latest forecast is for 30mm rain and localised flash flooding but clearing Friday and good Saturday and Sunday. Could be a rather wet start to the weekend and some "interesting" tracks.
I would be thinking twice about going the back way unless you want trailers totally covered in mud.
What Tracks are planned? or do we need to keep that until Friday night discussion around the bush TV

Tend to agree about driving the dirt roads Matt, but Alex wants to go that way, his call. Tracks planned can be discussed around the 'bush TV' with one or two tracks that some might want to see but unlikely to want to drive.(You know the ones Matt). May even go for a drive Friday arvo if some are interested. Think we will be ok with the river crossings unless it absolutely pours tonight/early tomorrow.

Again, should be a great weekend with plenty of driving and great company. Will see some in Yea tomorrow morning and the rest of you at Skipworth if all goes to plan.

Gazza and Kev, guess we will meet you guys at Skipworth. Even if it is busy, just prop there as we should be there by 1.30ish. If all ok and we stay there will text Alex and Naomi to let them know.

Alex, I know the Yea/Mansfield leg can be boring but imo opinion still a better option, especially if it is wet.

Allan mate it was a fantastic, fun, full weekend meeting up with all you guys again. We had a great night around the fire on Friday. Got to bed early for a full days drive Saturday. That's another story the tracks and the chicken tracks some of the group chose to take. To all on this trip I had as usual a fantastic time with some great bush loving Australian's and their families, that love to get out and just look and admire this great country we really do have.. Allan I have said this on numerous occasions and I shall say it again my friend..... you are my icon of 4wdtrip.com.au. Always a pleasure and privilege to travel this great land with you that we all call Australia.
