Hi guys, just curious! If you're from Melbourne, why is the meeting point in Adelaide?
I too am planning to do the Simmo next year and am looking to go with a group. My plan was to go via Mildura, Broken Hill, Cameron Corner, Innaminka, Birdsville, Dalhousie, Then down the Oodnadatta to William Creek, Renmark and home again.
Is that do-able for you?

Regards

Dave (disco)
HI Greg, Or even through renmark, flinders ranges then Oodnadatta to Dalhouse then across the desert would be my choice. Heading West to East is the best way to cross the Simpson.
04 Nov 2016
Trip Leader Richard Downing (downingr)
Hi all. I've done the Simmo 5 times so far. On paper west to east easier as the dunes are less steep that direction but that is balanced out with more sculuping (from drivers who don't know what they are doing !) on the western approach as more traffic comes that way. So I think now days its much the same either direction 'on balance' although West-East maybe a fraction easier. Greg's suggested route is a great plan, as is Dave's (Which I guess is much the same but just the reverse direction), both work well. In regard to Greg's idea, the best way from Innaminka to Birdsville is via Walkers Crossing but that track is often closed. I did that track a few months ago and it was really good, better than doing the Birdsvillse track all the way up. If you go via Innaminka (either direction, IE before or after Simmo depending on if we go E-W or W-E) and Walkers crossing is closed then you head across the top via Cordillo Downs.

Another question to be decided is do you do just the French line across or tackle the WAA line (somewhat harder). The Rig road is not worth doing as its clay capped in bad condition and you miss the fun sand dunes of the French or WAA lines.

I'm also from Melbourne so can't see the point in meeting up in Adelaide, which is quite a long way out of the way

I like the idea of us getting together before hand, maybe in Melbourne somewhere as it appears we are mainly from Melbourne ?

My wife has never done the Simmo with me (but done heaps of other trips with me like The Cape, Ningalo, Karanjini etc) but she has promised to come so this looks to be a great opportunity for her to come as it looks like it will be largely couples.

My phone number is 0411 220 200 If anyone wants to call.

Regards

Richard

As preparation (I'm from Bendigo BTW) I was planning to do the Border Track from Pinnarroo to Border Town on Labour Day weekend next year.
Some great sand hill experience before doing the simmo!

If we could plan to do the corner country in our trip, I don't care which direction (however I liked the challenge) so....I'm in.

;)

Greg, I think the Border track is still closed on Labour Day but head into Big Desert plenty in there to get some sand driving practice.

I did the crossing (W to E) at the start of August, we did it 14 days melb to melb, which we all thought was doing it fairly quick and wouldn't of minded having an extra couple of days to relax a bit more etc. Admittedly we lost a day due to a break down but you need to at least allow for that. It's a great place to take your time :)
10 days might be rushing it.
cheers.

I am also hoping to do something around July, August, September 2017 whether that be with this trip would mostly depend on length of trip. If only 10 days I would probably head off somewhere along the route with anyone interested in going further as I have long service leave.

I'll also be coming from Melbourne... keen for a catch up prior, also wouldn't mind heading out to Little Desert or similar for a play in the sand. I'll likely come on my own or with a mate - out of interest, what age kids are coming? I've got a 3 and 5 year old, but might be a little much for them I think.

Hello everyone, I am new here, me and the wife are keen on this trip, we are also coming from Melbourne, It is the first trip I have shown interest on here, but between now and then we will be going on many more trips.
We would like to come along, but because we are new, we understand if we have to make room for another member on this trip and we can withdraw from the group if this is a problem?

I see Dave is on the list, The only person I kind of know :)

Good Afternoon,

I got a bit overwhelmed with how much interest was in the trip and how quickly it filled up. Being the first time I have used this platform, there is quite a bit of learning how it works, too.

As it is a longer trip, I think it would be good if we can come together and catch up, so that everyone feels comfortable with the group as well - after all its all about having a good time together :-). As we have people from all parts of VIC, including Bendigo and Castlemain, I suggest that we meet in Sunbury, which hopefully would be accessible for most people, https://www.royalhotelsunbury.com.au/ . As it is getting closer to Christmas and everyone no doubt will be busy, I suggest we meet on Saturday December 03 around 11.00 am and aim for a 2 hour initial meeting.

Can you please inbox me to let me know if the time suits? I look forward to meet up with all of you

Good Afternoon,
I recently invited the confirmed participants for the Simpson Desert Trip to have a first "get together" on Saturday 03. December in Sunshine. Since than a few people have either cancelled their interest or are not sure if they will be able to go.

As the member from Bendigo is now not attending, I like to move the meeting closer to Melbourne, and I like to invite not only the confirmed Trip Members but also the people that have shown interest in the trip but so far missed out. Maybe we can create 2 groups at different dates depending on preferences. The meeting will now take place in http://www.theeastpantry.com/ 14 Centreway, Keilor East, Victoria - close to the freeway at 11 am on Saturday 03. December. Can everyone who likes to attend - also those who have previously confirmed the Sunshine Meeting, please let me know their attendance, so that I can make reservation for a big enough table? I look forward to meeting everyone. Holger

Hi, I'm down as coming and plan to come for sure. My 4x4 was written off as i was taken out by a B-Double on the Hay Plains 2 week ago. I've just purchased another 4x4 and in the process of setting it up. I won't be able to make the meeting in Melbourne as I'm based in Mildura. However I am 100% in at this stage and with my 3 boys and planning on tagging along as you past by Mildura.

Hi guys,
My understanding is that this is some serious remote off-roading. I understand that the trip is full ATM but I would like some more information as to what fuel range is required? and any other "special" stuff for such remote exploring. Also not sure what sort of tracks are there and hoping my 4by can handle it (see my page for details)

Trip is still a long way so things can change, I am not 100% on dates etc but in case I end up being available and someone withdraw from trip I would want to join knowing more details.

Unfortunately I am unable to do the meetup as I have another trip to attend to (4wdtrip get together)

Would appreciate your help. Thanks

Hey Thurstain, you would be fine you have a bit of sand driving experience now and your 4wd will be up to it. The only thing I would suggest for you is to get a fridge and be organised with your food supplies. Would be good to catch up on a trip again.

Hi Dave,
Thanks for your reply. Yes it would be good to catch up again and I am actively looking into getting a fridge but I'm still looking at the moment for some Christmas specials or something. If I end up coming to this trip and I haven't sorted fridge out yet, I can always walk into BCF and buy one last minute as long as I setup dual battery first.

But the dates don't align 100% with my girlfriend uni so will need to confirm that first and will see if a spot comes available closer to the dates. Also just wanted to make sure my setup is good for this trip. Sand experience should not be a problem by then after the week I spent in Big Desert with you and Dennis, going Robe beach driving in 2 weekends with Kelvin and planning a trip to QLD in summer so might do some beach driving in NSW / QLD too.

Could you please tell me how many days travel and total litres of fuel required between fuel depots? Thanks, Jono.
04 Dec 2016
Trip Leader Richard Downing (downingr)
Other than the actual Simpson Desert crossing there are regular fuel stops along the way such that any vehicle with standard fuel tank will be OK

In regard to the actual Simpson crossing the distance from Oodnadatta (the last fuel stop) and Birdsville is 600km.

I have crossed the Simpson five times. Once was towing so ignore that fuel Consumption and on three of the trips used about 100littrs of diesel driving a manual diesel (4.5lt twice and 4.2lt once ) and used about 130litres in an automatic 4.5lt diesel. Each time I carried 180litrres so always had plenty of spare fuel when I got to Birdsville. I like to have enough fuel in case things go pear shaped. Other vehicles in our conveys over the years with the smaller 2.5-3.0 lt diesels always used much the same as my 4.5lt diesel. Obviously a petrol vehicle will use a lot more in the heavy sand driving as does automatics which tend to use about 30% more than manuals in heavy sand driving.

One fact is the less load you have on board the less fuel you use so avoid overloading

Hope that helps

Thanks Richard - very informative and most helpful.
05 Dec 2016
Brett (Gxlhunjee)
Thanks Richard. I've got 140litres Diesel on board the 100 so should be able to get by maybe with a couple of 20lt jerrys for good measure. I'm interested how much water you carried on previous trips? Going on the minimum 7l per person per day, I'd be thinking minimum 40lt per person for the Simpson crossing. Would you say that is about right? Considering a flexi water bladder that fits between the cargo barrier and the 2nd row seats. Is there water anywhere along the French line route (assuming thats what we end up doing?) Cheers, Brett
07 Dec 2016
Trip Leader Richard Downing (downingr)
WE have never used lot of water as we do not shower or wash. So I normally head out with a primary tank of 60 litres and a working bottle of 15 litres. I usually arrive at Birdsville with 3/4 of the water left (with 2 people in the car). One of my car's has a bladder of the type you mention. When I first installed it I had problems as the standard outlet valve at the bottom of the bladder for getting the water out leaked, in the end we replaced it with a much better quality valve and have had no issues since then. So I suggest install it well before the trip, and then fill it and keep it full fro a few months to make sure no leaking. We also found that 'ruling' on the bladder was a problem but we detected that very early and then sheathed it in a sacrificial plastic outer which we can replace when it wears through on any spot. We keep an eye on it each trip fro that reason so we can put some cloth tape over the sacrificial layer if it wears through part way through a trip.

You cannot get fresh water at all in the Simpson, but you can get a shower at both Delhousie Springs and Punie Bore.

Regards Richard

Hi all. Holger had planned a meeting shortly, which I was unable to attend as I'll be away in USA when it was to be on. If anyone wants to catchup with me before the trip, feel free to give me a call on 0411220200 and we can make a time to catch up.

There are 4 points to note in regard to your trip planning, as the Simpson Desert is a remote location and preparation is key.
1. Fuel - Diesel Cars should carry 170-180 Litres, you should get to Birdsville with maybe 60 spare, but you need to have extra in case of the unexpected. Petrol Cars should carry 250Litres
2. Water - I carry 80 litres and usually arrive in Birdsville with at least 40 litres (thats for two people). But that does not allow for any washing so between Punie Bore and Birdsville will be 4-5 days between showers (it won't be too hot so t's never been an issue)
3. Tires - Must have 2 spares and tires must be in good condition on preferably of LT type
4 Vehicle Service - Get your car thoroughly checked before you leave.

Regards Richard

I have posted a detailed trip plan which is under the FILES tab. Please feel free to give me any feedback on the plan. One doesn't want to 'micromanage' everyday as the group can be spontaneous to changing conditions but some group members may want to join the group along the way rather than leave X Melbourne together hence I have published clear dates/times/locations for the early part of the trip. Hi everyone.

I'm hosting a 'meet and greet' evening, on Wednesday 24th June at 7pm at Fairfield Victoria, if people would like to catch up and get to meet before we head off in August. If your one of the 'interested' people, feel free to come along as well in case you decide to join in.

We will meet at Unit 10/44 Sparks Avenue Fairfield and I'll provide some nibbles, tea/coffee and drinks. This is not my home, its a warehouse I use for my 4wds and gear and there is plenty of room for us to meet and greet.

Please bring along your 4wd, and we can also talk about trip preparation etc.

Hopefully you can all make it, please let me know if you can make it.

My Phone is 04111 220 200.

Hi all, just reminding you that we are planning a get together this coming Wednesday 21st June at 7pm, address Unit 10/44 Sparks Avenue Fairfield. It is an light industrial complex and my factory, number 10, is marked in a yellow sign 'Richies Toy Workshop'. Hopefully we will all meet then. If you can bring your 4wd that is even better as we can go through any trip preparation questions you have. I've just returned from the Simmo this week and it is looking great at the moment.

Hi all.

Well its only a few weeks to go before we head out to the Simpson Desert, hope you are all ready to go and excited.

I believe Gary&Janette plus Mlke are meeting the group at Coward Springs on Tuesday evening. Trina and Peter on the toehr hand are doing some adventuring before hand and so will meet us at Pune Bore just before the Simmo Crossing. Banger is going to meet at Burra on the Monday evening.

I was originally planning to be at the BP Calder Outbound on the Monday morning, but turns out I only get back from watching my sons Rugby in Tasmania at Midnight Sunday, so I plan to leave my car fully packed at the airport, get off the plane, drive for a few hours and then camp out and keep moving towards Burra on the Monday, to a drive at Burra Monday night as planned.

I'm not sure what Rodney's plans were, but if they were to meet at the BP on Calder Outbound, can you now meet at Burra Caravan Park on Monday evening instead ? Can you please message me and confirm or let me know what plan you have to join the group, so we know whiner and when to look out for you.

Everyone else, let me know if I have your plans incorrect.

Regards and see you all on the track

Richard

When your planning your drive, as you pass through Dalhousie Springs, keep an eye out for us in case we are still there swimming !!! Hopefully you recall what my White Nissan Ute looks like with the rooftop White tent on top. Otherwise proceed to Punie Bore and meet us there. Depending on what time you arrive at Punie Bore, we may move on into the desert proper that day. If you arrive 3pm or alter, we will camp at Punie Bore. If you arrive by lunch time, we will probably move on and camp out in the actual Simpson Desert. We will play it by ear. When you arrive at Punie Bore, we will probably try and camp well off the track next to the lake, so don't panic if you cant see us when we arrive. There is only ONE track leading to the right near where the Toilet/Shower is and that track is a dead end about 500m along, chances are we will be camped towards the end of that side track away from the main track and parking area. Don't forget to send my SatPhone a text message as you pass through Odnadatta which will probably be the last place you will get phone signal, and ion the MSG say what time you are passing through, so we will then know roughly when you should arrive. Regards and see you there. RIchard

Thanks Richard,
We will top up with diesel at Oodnadatta for safety, and will text your SatPhone from there with departure time as we leave.
I do recall that your Patrol Ute looks a lot like mine - just the wrong colour!
Are you planning to be on a particular UHF channel (other than 10) on which we should try to reach you on approach to or from Purni Bore?

Hi Peter and Trina

Hope your trip is going well if you've already departed.

If at all possible, can you try and meet up with the group either at Mt Dare on the Wednesday night or at Dalhousie Springs by 10am on the Thursday morning. After reviewing the trip plans I am keen that we move on from Pune Bore on a Thursday and make some good headway into the Simpson on that day. Let me know if you get this message and what is possible. My regular phone number is 0411220200. Regards Richard

Hi All,
Hope everyone got home safely.
What news on the ZD30, Mike?
After the run down the dog fence, we dropped in to Silverton to do the galleries, re-stocked and dined in Broken Hill before making our way to Mungo Lakes NP.
Very interesting history & great camping, but the hiking across the dry & ancient lake-bed was a bit ho-hum.
Camped on the Murray & hiked through Hattah-Kulkyne, before making our way down to Hopetoun - very nice camping on the lake.
Another 17km hike in the Wyperfeld NP with lots of interesting desert info before heading home.
Great trip, thanks all - expecting Pauline has the full trip report well in hand ;-)

Hi Guys,
Just to let you know, I eventually got the ZD30 back on the road (in Broken Hill) last sat lunch time. Proved to be very difficult to get anyone interested in sourcing the part or doing the repair. Eventually I sourced the part and got local Volvo Truck repairer to fit for me.. Made it home sunday night. All part of the outback travel experience
