Photo Trip-Craig's Hut over nighter EASY

Mansfield, VIC

See more trips

This trip is purely for photos. There will be a Super Moon on 15th & I'd like to take my 16 year old son up to take snaps of the huge moon hanging over the iconic Craig's Hut. If there is clear skies, the photos should be awesome. There is a small camp ground near the hut where we'll spend the night.

The next day will be an easy hut trip & also stop for photos at Brindabella Water Falls. We'll wind our way down and into Sheepyard Flats to camp. Then up at sparrows to head off home.

The meeting spot is at the BP Servo which is on the Mt Bulla side of town. If you're not familiar with the servo location.....go through the main street, turn right at the roundabout at the end of the main street to head towards Mt Bulla. Go all the way to the end (about 1 km) then turn left & the BP is about 500 mtrs on the left.

I'll have a white Prado (on it's maiden voyage with us) in bog standard trim....road tires & all. We'll be there at 2pm.

If you arrive earlier and would like a bite to eat, come & join my son and I at the pub in town for a counter meal & a pot. I should be in town by 12.00pm.

Bring ya camera, food and drinks. There is drop dunnies at both camp grounds. We should have the place to ourselves given the dates (during the week).

Begginers to 4wding welcome on this trip.

Yeh, no worries mate. If it's too full there's plenty of other options available. We might do Fry's Hut camp ground instead.

Yes mate, you'll have no problems towing a camper trailer around. Note that we'll be in the mountains so prepare to drag it up & down long climbs. Jeep Track is probably gonna be your biggest challenge however, if your not confident taking it up there, there is other routes we can take.

Ok fellow hut travellers. My plans have slightly changed in regards to the vehicle that I was originally planning on taking (a hired 4wd). I've put me hard earned towards new 2nd hand truck. I'll know 100% by tomorrow but I should be bringing the new addition to our family, a shiny white Prado. It's stock as a rock but will have no problems on this trip.
If this is the case, I'm happy to meet up earlier if everyone likes. I'm thinking it would be a great way to meet over a countery & a beer at the pub? I'll get me hands on a hand held UHF as well so we'll use channel 10.
Once I get the good news (fingers crossed) I'll update & edit the planned trip. If this change doesn't suite please let me know as I'm just as happy to keep it the same but I will definitely be up there earlier.
Word of warning, if your truck isn't road worthy, I have it on good authority that the local plod keeps an eye out on forums such as this & goes out of his way to issue people with canaries. I personally know two blokes that have been canaried on the weekend just gone.

Ok, looks like all hell is gonna break loose in regards to the weather this weekend (the weather burro do tend to exaggerate these days though). It should be fine by Tuesday though. We wont know the condition of the tracks until we arrive but I was hoping to do some tracks that require locking the hubs in (just mild tracks) & two river crossings.
With this in mind, I do intend to keep this as an easy group at beginner level. If any tracks that we come across look out of anybody's comfort zone, I'm happy to find other tracks along the way.

To discomatt & all on the Earth Vic gathering......batten down the hatches boys, it's about to get nasty. Ha ha

Just got back from our trip up there, river are low but it poured with rain last night and today when we were packing up but by the time you get there they won't be an issue. The main roads are in good condition, we tried to get up to Craigs hut via 16 mile jeep track, corn hill and monument, we only got half way up corn hill due to heaps of trees down, the next day after a sprinkle of rain twin locked trucks struggled on 16 mile jeep track but I heard that monument had been graded and was a easy drive

No fire wood around sheepyard so make sure you collect it well before you get there

Thanks Matt. Yeh, we'll probably give 16 mile jeep track a miss. This is only gonna be an easy trip. Corn Hill track is shut until December I believe. Anyway, we'll suck it and see when we get in there but again, thanks for the heads up. How was the earth gathering mate?

Just in case you don't know Mike spoke with Mt Buller resort mgt & they said Clear Hills track & Monument track are closed til 30 Nov & it's a 20 minute walk in to get to Craig's hut. FYI we're bringing our off road camper trailer. Looking forward to it.
Hi Jo. Clear Hills is always closed until December and weather permitting. We can get to the hut from the other side as I have spoken to someone who was resently up at the hut. We'll be right.

Earth gathering was great, good to catch up with old friends and meet a heap of people I have known over the forum for years and never met, heaps of laughs around the fire and a few great drives thrown in.

Well, it seems that my initial homework into the dates for the super moon were out by 1 day. I had a feed come up from National Geographic just on 2 months ago about said super moon which definitely said the 15th. It's actually happening tonight.
Oh well, we'll still be heading up tomorrow & I'm sure that we'll still get some great shots. It's always great up there anyway.
Very sorry for the stuff up. I can't change my plans & get up there in time tonight so still on for tomorrow.

Matthew, glad you had a great time on the Earth gathering.

That's a shame Lorraine. I'm sure that your hubby will be on the mend in no time and we'll catch up on the next trip.
Robbie & Jo, can I trouble you to by one bag of fire wood each from the servo (I'll do the same). Any fire wood available out on the tracks will most likely be wet & not good to burn. Wood is scarce at Sheepyards.
Also, my brother Chippy (Leigh) & his son Coby will be joining us. He's a very experienced 4wdriver and great company.
Make sure you bring warm clothes as it was -1 on top of Mt Bulla last night.
    See yuz tomorrow.
