A tour around Toolangi MEDIUM

Toolangi State Forest., VIC

See more trips

Having recently getting my vehicle back after an engine rebuild etc, I need to take it for a 'test run' prior to an upcoming High Country trip to ensure everything works as it should. I have classified this trip as 'medium' as I am basing it on standard or slightly modified vehicles attending and for members who have little or no experience driving in the Toolangi State Forest.

UPDATE: Please note change of meeting time at Glenburn.

SO IF YOU HAVE A HEAVILY MODIFIED VEHICLE AND HAVE BEEN TO TOOLANGI NUMEROUS TIMES, PLEASE DO NOT JOIN THIS TRIP AS WE WILL NOT BE DRIVING TRACKS SUCH AS ROCKY, AEROPLANE, RED WEST, (LYNDALLS), COCKPIT, BLOWHARD ETC AND ANY TRACKS THAT ARE FULL OF BOG HOLES.

This will be a family friendly trip so feel free to bring  partners and/or kids, ( no dogs), with plan to be heading home by 4pm. We will have a 30 minute lunchbreak somewhere along the way, so dont bring a bbq as we want to spend  most of the day driving, not waiting for the snags to cook. If you wish to buy your lunch, there is a great bakery in Yarra Glen. I expect us to drive aprox 100 klms max on the tracks so if you need fuel there are stations in Yarra Glen and at our meeting point at Glenburn  The day is designed to be enjoyable for all, a few challenges but nothing that will put anyone outside their comfort zone.

As with all my trips, there are a few 'pre requisites';

1. CHECKING IN.

You must check in at least 18 hrs prior to trip commencing, (midday Fri 28th at latest). If you have not checked in to confirm your attendance, you will be removed from trip. (Common courtesy to trip leader & other attendees).

2. RECOVERY GEAR/UHF.

Everyone attending must have basic recovery gear, (snatchstrap, shackles, appropriate recovery points) and UHF either handheld or in car. Winch is not mandatory.

3. TYRES

A/T as a minimum.

4. BE ON TIME.

Introductions/drivers briefing will commence at 9.30 sharp.

You also must have a sense of humour and not be 'politically correct'....wink

At this stage I have limited this trip to 8 vehicles, but Matt (Discomatt) may run a seperate 'hard' trip on the day for 5 vehicles if there  is any interest.

I have added some of the tracks we will be driving and track rating is based on standard vehicles. Will not put up the other tracks as will depend on how we are traveling as to whether we will get to them.

Thanks Kelvin, it has been a long time. Cooked the engine in May this year and told mechanic not in a hurry to get car back. Bit longer than expected and looking forward to getting out again.

That's a 'bugger' Scotty, as you said it has been quite awhile since we have been out together. To you and Carolyn, keep checking the site as on most trips posted there are 1 or 2 who pull out.

Surprised the trip filled overnight, as when I last checked prior to 'hitting the sack' there was only a couple who had joined. Thanks to all those who have joined and I look forward to meeting you all. If you have any questions feel free to contact me, either here or by pm.

Just out of curiousity, could all those attending let me know how familiar, if at all, you are with Toolangi, as if most have never been there before, I will try to include a few of the other sites that maybe of interest.

Hi Allan,
Looking forward to you trip , Last time and only time I've been there was about 25 years ago , took my brand new GQ up there, running Desert Dueler's , lol.
Needless to say we didn't have a fun time and was full of stinky bogs holes .
And never been back since , lol , so Its all new to me 2nd time around.
Cheers Rick

Looking forward to my first trip with 4wdtrip. Although I grew up in the area (Glenburn) I've only really started 4wding in the last couple years. Mostly touring type driving with camping trips with family in the high country. Looking forward to meeting everyone and having a fun day

Justin, there is no guarantee that both our groups will meet up for lunch. Whilst Matt & I are hopeful that it will happen, if the hard group get held up for whatever reason, I dont want our group hanging around waiting. Matt & I will discuss his planned route and see how we go.

If you want to do the hard trip, maybe ask Matt if you can join as already one member has withdrawn from mine and joined his.

Gidday Rick, yes Toolangi still has its bogholes some 25 years later but we will try to avoid. Quite a few changes up there now, so as you said, will be like going to a new location.

Hopefully you will have an enjoyable day Greg. As you probably know, Toolangi has a great variety of tracks and what we will be doing will have the odd challenge but not too difficult.

Thanks for the offer Jesse and feel free to send the list if you wish. Have done majority of tracks in Toolangi over the years and the majority of the tracks we will be driving are the seasonally closed tracks that will have just reopened.

BTW, am considering increasing the numbers to 10 as have had a few requests to increase numbers. Will give it some thought over the next few hours but dont think there will be an issue as have run groups of 12 in Toolangi a few times on the tracks planned for the day.

PLEASE NOTE THE CHANGED MEETING TIME!.

Caught up with Discomatt today trying to arrange meeting time/place for both groups to have lunch. Also a number of participants are coming from western side of the CBD, so thought later meeting time would be more suitable.

What tracks did you drive last Sunday Dale?

As long as we dont have too much sun on the Friday before the trip; we dont want DUST.

Hi Dale,
Sorry you can't make it, If you can't make my next weekend trip to Mt Matlock , please drop out ASAP to give other members that can attend a spot , as I have many wishing to join this trip.
Its only fair and gives people a chance to organise themselves.
I hope we can catch up soon when your work commitments don't get in the way
Cheers Rick

Greg, keep checking as someone may drop out or a spot may become available if any of the group fail to 'check in' by the cut off time.

Unfortunately I will be 'flying solo' now as my partner will be tied up helping look after her newly arrived grand daughter.

Hey Neil, just noticed you have upgraded your 4wd; well done and look forward to seeing it.

Unfortunately I had to remove 2 members from our trip as they failed to 'check in' by the requested time. Some may find this harsh, but have been caught ouit a few times with members who have not checked in and failed to show on the day meaning others who may have wanted to attend were not given the opportunity. So now, 2 spots available and for anyone who does take them, PLEASE check in at the same time.

Well done on getting on your 1st trip Greg. Is a shame that I had to remove a couple of members, but 'my trip, my rules'. As with all trips on this site, Kelvin gives people plenty of notice to 'check in' so in my opinion there is no excuse not to do so.

Neil, looking forward to seeing your new truck and thanks for your wishes. Again, just confirming 9.30 sharp at the Glenburn servo and if unsure where it is; just yell out.

See you all in the morning.
