Sand/Beach driving weekend at Robe (South Australia) EASY / MEDIUM

Robe, SA

See more trips

Heading to Robe for a weekend (Sat, Sun and Monday). If you are keen on beach driving, this is a good opportunity for you.

Sat (9 Dec)

Initial plan is to meet at Sea Vu Caravanpark in Robe http://www.seavucaravanpark.com.au/ in on Fri  (9 Dec)

The plan is to drive from Robe and head south on Sat. We will break camp early and take our time to explore the area. There are many unmarked tracks around sand dune. It will take time to find our way. There will be plenty of photo opportunity. Winston and Antony will be helping us on leading this trip. Winston will also film the trip using his drone. It will be an amazing opportunity to film your vehicle too.

Depends on our convoy speed and if there are any recovery. We will turn around and return back to Robe.

Sun (10 Dec)

On Sunday, we will head straight to Beac to hport, which is about 20-30 mins south of Robe. From there, we will head north. There are many sand (and BIG) dunes to play around. We will continue to head north, we may keep going north until we get back to Robe. Or we find the shortest/quickest way through hwy and drive back to Robe.

Mon (11 Dec)

On Monday, everyone can decide what they want to do or go. It's your free time and head back to Melbourne.

Accommodation

We will be staying at Sea Vu Caravanpark http://www.seavucaravanpark.com.au/ (08 8768 2273)

They have allocated a special camping area for our group. It's close to the beach and other facilities.

The cost of camping is $13 per person per night if you are going to camp for 3 nights. If you can only stay for 2 nights, it will be $15.

Please make a booking by COB 28th Oct to reserve your spot on this trip. Make sure you quote "4WD TRIP" when booking your stay. Pleaee also send me your confirmation details. Due to high demand for this trip, you will be removed from the trip if booking is not made by the due date. Thank you.

This trip will be suitable for a standard 4wd (sorry, not SUV such as Xtrail or RAV4). You will need low range gear (i.e. 4H and 4L).

Sand Flag

You will need a sand flag to drive in Robe.
Some of our members DIY their own sand flags.
You can also get them on eBay or other 4x4 stores.

Hi guys,
Just going to plan this trip properly. So I am looking at staying at Robe for the weekend. I think best we stay at a caravan park unless you have better suggestion. I am looking at Lakeside Holiday Park
http://www.lakesiderobe.com.au/accommodation/unpowered-site/

Don't know the availability yet, but if you can take a look and let me know what you think.

If you have other suggestions, please post it here by Fri.

Will this be our base camp for the whole weekend?

The campsite you suggested looks good, however unpowered cheapest is $36, possible more as it might be shoulder season

I found this one
http://robeholidaypark.com.au/bookings/ - for those nights is $30 WITH POWER and it's literally 1km down the road

Maybe call them to work out an even better deal for a large group?! Were going to be 8 cars so they should be able to work something out.

On this trip I plan to bring 4K filming and would like to fully film this event . I dont have a drone yet so fingers crossed if I get my xmas pressie early.

Hmmm Allan (BigPig) are you going ?
I've got the drone covered. Will be extensively documenting from the air. Always good to have more than one though. Will be great to have 4k on the ground. I always shoot in 1080 60fps though unless it's a straightforward scenery shot. Makes time stretching so much smoother in editing.

We are considering a rolling camp at one of the 'casual' sites behind the dunes down past Nora Creina. They are outside of NP or SP areas.

Hi Winston, oh I have seen your drone footage - takes filming to the next level. do you need a pilots license to fly one ?
Cheers Steve.

To operate commercially you need a UAV certification with CASA. Not cheap to get.

To fly recreationally, no license needed, but having said that all rec pilots should know all the regulations before putting a UAV in the air. They have the potential to cause a great deal of damage and injury. I've cut myself to the bone in an emergency hand-catch situation to prevent a crash.

Steve is correct, no fires allowed in the area, including most caravan parks, from usually 1st November till start of April. Is a pita, but this has been in place for a number of years. Not sure about the Robe beaches, but at Southend you are allowed fires on the beach ans long they are below the high tide mark and obviously if not a day of total fire ban.

Kelvin, noticed your trip is in 'high season' at your preferred caravan park; $50 for unpowered is pretty steep, but everywhere in the area is not cheap. You could consider Little Dip Conservation Park campsites, but from memory they are not overly big.

Nice. I have just taken one of the spots and il make payment for camping in the next few days. Really looking forward to it. Closest I ever came to driving on dunes is while I lived in the NT. Keen to see how my Patrol holds up there at robe with the sand being really soft in some sections

Hi Kelvin
Excellent. I will book in the next couple days.
I need to confirm if my girlfriend is coming or if I'm going to be alone before I can book.

This is my first time on the beach, is there anything I should do or anything you recommend for rust prevention? I was in robe last Jan I know there's a big car wash 5 mins away from caravan park to wash off the salt.. Would that be the best way to go?

Thanks

Fish oil is a good corrosion inhibitor when hitting areas of high salt concentration. And definitely wash it well as soon as possible to minimise the risk. I'm wondering with the dump nearby do they have water pits for the trucks to drive through?

Thurstain, as Winston said, many use fish oil but it does stink. I have used lanolin, (can get from all auto stores), and spray on. Key is to let it settle for 2-3 days and then try to rub with a rag, (like polishing), and this reduces the amount of sand that will stay attached to the chassis etc. After driving on sand you will find sand will be in all the 'nooks and crannies', so continual visits to the carwash is vital to remove as much as you can.

You guys will enjoy sand driving and Kelvin has picked a pretty good park with very reasonable rates for accommodation.

I'm going to give it a crack at making one using a telescopic fishing rod. If it comes up well I'd be happy to make up some more for other members needed them. Have found the rod for $30, carbon fibre, 3.6m length. Will really just be about working out the fixing mechanism, the rest is easy. I'd say to do it properly it should cost me more than 50-60 bucks. Which means for you guys it won't cost more than 50-60 bucks and a couple of beers. 😊

Thanks I'll look into lanolin. I'm not too worried about the sand I spent a week in wiper field and big desert and sand wasn't an issue it's more the salt that I'm worried about.

For anyone else that hasn't organised a sand flag yet, another option I'm planning on using is a length of orange conduit and a trailer flag from bunnings cable tied to the front of my roof rack.

Height should be perfect and the length should be short enough that it won't flex too much as opposed to using a longer length of conduit on the bullbar. Cost is less than $10.

Steven (ReefMaster) wrote: ARB sells sand flags for $115 . They are detachable and mount to the Bullbar . If time is short , I am sure TJM and Opposite Lock stores will stock them too for similar prices .
Kelvin is there a cost to drive in the SA National Parks ? And I am hearing that they don't like us to carry Chainsaws?
$115! Ouch. I made one out of an old fiberglass tent pole which slots into a short length of 20mm dia. conduit that I fixed onto the bullbar. The pole fits into my awning bag when not on the bullbar. I knew that hoarding old crap would come in handy ;)

Hi everyone, looks like the weather will be perfect for this trip! .... If you are planning to arrive on Sat morning, please let me know. Otherwise, I assume all of you will arrive on Fri afternoon/evening.

If possible, please fit a sand flag on your vehicle to avoid collision from oncoming traffic when going over sand dunes. You will be surprised by how fast people drive on sand dune.

Make sure you bring along your recovery gear, check your vehicle conditions. Also if your vehicle have electronic traction control, please double check your vehicle manual and see if there is an option to turn it off. You don't want traction control when driving on sand.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Drive safe and see you soon.

Kelvin,
I'm counting the minutes. Sand Flag done, replacing engine and diff oils, filters and basic checks will be done tonight after work.

I am now thinking about maybe leaving Thursday night after work and go half way to somwehere around Grampians and camp Thursday night so Friday I can arrive early and enjoy Robe a bit instead of driving for 6 hours all day. Weather in Robe looks like it might be a bit cold but as long as it doesn't rain it should be good.

See you all there!

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Drive safe and see you soon.
Thanks Kelvin, can't wait! Car is all packed and ready to go. I'm planning on leaving bayside Melb around late morning Fri. If anyone else is heading off around the same time or I'll be passing by feel free to send me a text and we can convoy. Otherwise see you in Robe. Cheers, Brett 0438773415
