Walhalla to Avon River area camping trip - grand final weekend MEDIUM / HARD

Walhalla to Avon River camping trip, VIC

See more trips
Heading from Walhalla- starting on Beardmores track across to Fulton's Creek Tk and across to camp the first night at Turpins Flat, then up around the bottom of the Avon Wilderness area and camping alongside the Avon River for the 2nd night. Route is planned, though having not done a lot of the area for day 1 this bit is open to change if need be.

Aiming to challenge myself a little more with Fulton's Creek Track in its entirety. Then across to some easier stuff around Avon area, heaps of river crossings, some good boggy areas and steeps. And the views are the best I've seen.

There will be quite a few kms travelled in days 1 and 2, but we take it slowly, so if you like a fast paced trip this isn't for you. We stop and admire views, have coffee breaks if we feel like it. So if you get impatient with this stuff then leave the spot for someone else.

Have at least one other vehicle joining at this stage. May be more.

I am interested BUT only if the Hawks get bumped out of the finals, if they are out I am in, if they are in I am out so at this stage I will not join for sure just to keep it fair for everyone and hopefully there will be a spot left...

All good Matt. Either way it's a win for you.

I've uploaded the .gpx file of the route for anyone interested.

To those who are interested in this trip I am happy to open it up to more vehicles if someone wants to lead a 2nd convoy. I have everything sorted for maps and planning so it would really just be a case of managing your own navigation and probably having a half hour buffer between start out times. I'm happy to handle briefing for the entire group and will prepare a "kit" for the leader of the 2nd convoy. There's heaps of space to camp at Turpins Flat, and there are about 5 different camping spots with a km where we are stopping on night 2.

Any takers? Let me know and tell me what numbers you are happy to lead and I'll open up the numbers.

Id lead the second if enough takers. Up to 4 more would be fine. Keen to do walhalla. Havnt done much there. But have done a bit around avon wilderness.

Right I've joined the trip as I keen as to get out on one of these but they keep filling up before I get the chance.
I've put down I'll be coming with a friend and my boy but as no one else has any kids with them it might not be the go.

G'day Richard, that's not to say you can't bring your kids. I have no problem with them coming along. Just so long as they can handle the long hours of driving time - especially day 1 I'm imagining. All up I think across 3 days we end up doing around 200km on mostly L4 stuff so it's fairly slow going.
04 Sep 2016
Richard (Papa_Bob)
That's good because last time I left the missus with the kids all weekend she was not in a good mood upon return.
So the nearly 4 year old will come with. He's easily entertained and no problem with long drives.
What times do you think we'll be pulling up for the night?
Thanks

Trip Leader Winston (Winston_FJ) Premium Member
I really hope to be pulling up by 5 at the latest, 4ish would be nicer. 1st day is the unknown, will depend on track conditions and hopefully no turnarounds. I have contingency routes planned if we hit something impassable but if we get caught with winching or recoveries arrival times blow right out.
04 Sep 2016
Richard (Papa_Bob)
Nice one.
That's pretty much what I was expecting.

Looking forward to it.

Of those bringing an adult passenger with them - are they people you would trust to drive your own vehicle? The reason I ask is that there are several sections of the trip that run along ridges or provide big open areas around river crossings where I would love to get some aerial footage of the convoy using my drone. Sadly I haven't mastered driving and flying yet so if someone could take the wheel of my rig at a few select points that would be great.
05 Sep 2016
Daniel (wj_dan)
Sorry. Flying solo. Will be good to see your drone.
07 Sep 2016
Richard (Papa_Bob)
If my mate comes along id trust him enough depending on terrain but it might end up just me and the wee man.

William (stocklandy4dayz)
I possibly will and Yeahh the drone will be sweet to see in action

Thanks for organising this trip for us, my best friend will be joining me and is a very trustworthy and honest bloke that would be OK to drive if required to help out we shall see if required. Let us know if you need anything else.

Cheers Alex ( Lone Wolf )

Thanks guys. The places I'm considering the filming for are all the easier bits where we can get the convoy a bit more bunched up and get some good footage along ridges with amazing scenery in the background. I don't want to waste everyone's time too much with stopping frequently to film - but a few select bits of footage is always good for memories.

Hi guys I'm already doing my pre trip prep list for this one. Can everyone please make sure they have adequate fuel for the trip? Food and water we can share around, but fuel is a must have. Check and clean your winches and recovery gear in advance. Take the time either this weekend or next to give everything a wash out and check for frayed winch ropes etc. As far as cooking and camping gear goes between a few of us that I know are coming we can support a big group but need everyone to be self sufficient otherwise.

If anyone needs a tent let me know - I have a 6 man tent and mattresses I won't be using and it's no big deal to strap them on board. I'll be bringing extra cooking gear - hotplate and gas - as well to do some cook ups when we set up camp.

Am thinking of absorbing both groups into one convoy depending on thoughts. It may take a little patience through some of the trickier sections but really it's only day one that will be hard.

Feedback welcome.

Also don't forget take in=take out. No facilities for 99% of the trip.

Meeting point finalised. Anyone travelling from north or west wanting to meet prior please message me, also have a meet up in Pakenham organised with friends.

Well 10 minutes to go in the footy and Hawks are down by nearly 40 points so they are out of the finals, that's ok we have had our run, time for someone else, Go Doggies they deserve it !!
Enough of the footy I am going 4wding and camping :-)
How many km are we likely to cover?
16 Sep 2016
Trav (dungarover)
Probably travel up there Thursday arvo and stay in either Erica or Rawson for the night, doing nearly 4 hours from Snake Valley for a 9AM meet at the Thompson dam is too much driving in one day especially if by your itinerary you plan on doing plenty of it. Like Matt, also driving a V8 Disco I have the same question as far as distance goes just in case I need to take some extra fuel (the Disco like a drink, kind of like me...LOL!!!). Trav

Looking back through the comments about 200km off road, I am not to bad with 85l petrol and 60l LPG but 4.6 with a cam and it drinks big time when working hard, might bring a jerry or 2 just to be sure. No fuel at Erica

what time are you heading through Pakenham? Its about 2 hours from my place to the meeting point will hit Pakenham about 7.15.

I'm going to stop at maccas in Pakenham to meet friends and have breakfast. Want to be rolling out of there at 7.15 at the latest. Will aim to be there a 6.45.

Matthew (discomatt)
We might keep going through Pakenham and have a bite at Moe, break up the morning a bit more and will have to stop there anyway for fuel, won't be much time between us so will put a call out on the radio as we go past the servo.
What cars will be in that group?

Does anyone want/require any additional camping gear? I have a spare tent, 2 inflatable mattresses, cooker and gas that I can bring along.

Also, does anyone have a hi powered inverter? I've only got a 600/1200W but was thinking of bringing the Aldi coffee machine for some morning greatness and it peaks around the 1650w mark I think.
21 Sep 2016
Daniel (wj_dan)
All good for camping gear. Dont have generator though. But would be keen on a propper morning coffee if someone does. Ill take chainsaw and plenty of tools. (Jeeps need to be prepared)
21 Sep 2016
Matthew (discomatt)
For a real coffee when out camping a stove top percolator or plunger works a treat, I can not stand instant coffee so real caffeine fix is a must have.
For the record can't stand the annoying noise of a generator either ;-)
All good for camping gear, thanks for the offer
21 Sep 2016
Richard (Papa_Bob)
Got to admit I agree with Matt. Percolator or stove. Not too much in the spirit of camping running a pod coffee machine 😉.
I was looking at getting an areopress. I've had coffee from those and liked it but read some reviews that slammed it so might just get a percolator.
21 Sep 2016
Trip Leader Winston (Winston_FJ) Premium Member
Yeah not a fan of generators either. And with the swag of inverters and battery charging systems there's little need these days.

And I know pod coffee its a bit "glamping" but so are fridges. I'm still an ice in the esky man - only because I blew all my budget this round on the other things like suspension, bar, winch, tyres, lighting etc. And beers to consume whilst installing said modifications. 15k in 4 weeks - I had to hit the anchors or the next big spend wouldve been a divorce!

Ok well if anyone has decent plunger coffee they want to bring and plunger one thing I can do is heated and frothed milk.

A heads up as to why a snorkel is essential- the video linked below (courtesy of AllanMac) is one of the crossings on Fultons Creek Tk we will be attempting if conditions permit. I will not be taking any risks to my vehicle nor to the safety of anyone in the convoy, so it will be assessed carefully. All decisions made will cater for the least experienced or comfortable driver and I won't stand for any pressuring of someone to do something that scares them and I want to make it clear that if you have any concerns to please raise them with me, even privately, and I will make the call. Hesitation or a wrong turn can result in a wreck or worse. I already have contingency routes planned to detour sections that could be impassable so changes won't create a problem or chaos.

Out there for a fun trip and to go home with fuel and food being the only things gone from what we went in with, and to bring out with us great memories and big smiles.

I wouldn't say *essential* mate. And I'm not sure how high the OE breathers are on your truck. I'm no mechanical so don't want to give you advice that could prove damaging. My personal approach would be to do a full diff/trans oil change when you return. Better safe than sorry I say.
22 Sep 2016
Matthew (discomatt)
With all the rain around it could be very deep but its the flow of water that is more of a consideration. The rivers up there can rise and fall very quickly so it will be a wait and see...
As far as diff breathers it is a good idea to have them but if you don't no need to panic, just check all oils as soon as you get home and if you have some water in the diff or transfer case drain it and refill with new oil, no harm done if sorted straight away
22 Sep 2016
Matthew (discomatt)
I have never had raised diff breather, have had water half way up the windscreen ( not advisable) and never had water in the diffs. Stop and wait for 5 minutes to let everything cool a bit makes a big difference and saves the brake disks from warping

Would have liked to join this trip, but couldnt commit as not sure if I would have my vehicle back. As Matt said, weather is looking ordinary for Thur/Fri with lots of rain, so think rivers will be reasonably high and flowing quite fast. Even if you have a snorkel, I would suggest taking a tarp as a 'back up'.

Well the forecasters are saying heavy rain for the region on Friday but I'm still holding onto hope that the series of highs moving across the centre of the country will push the wet cold fronts further south and we won't be hit with as much rainfall as predicted. I'm even calling it - sunny skies for breakfast on Saturday. But it's going to be COLD!! If you can guys please bring some firewood with you - the stuff we may come across out there will be wet and some dry stuff will help for getting it started.

Yep guys tarps are a good idea. I'm going to grab a couple today - a bigger one for shelter (will try to set vehicles up in a way we can have racks to attach tarp to and sit between cars - and a smaller one as a crossing bra depending on how fast the water is flowing.

Final checks guys - FUEL FUEL FUEL!! Enough for the whole trip. Don't ruin it for others by running short.
FOOD, WATER AND BOOZE - nowhere to buy anything out there. Get it all on Thursday night. I won't be holding things up on Friday for people to buy alcohol in Walhalla. CHECK YOUR RIG - Make sure your fluid levels are topped up and everything is tight etc. Mechanical issues do happen but good preparation can prevent a lot of them.
RECOVERY GEAR - it's a must.
UHF - make sure it's charged up. We have a big group and there will be a lot of communication especially if we have to reroute.
And bring plenty of clothes - it will be very cold (snow down to 900m) and wet and I personally hate getting back into wet clothes in the morning. Shoes too. Gumboots are a good idea if you have them.

Any queries please call 0412611732. If you are running late on the morning, please call or message before 8am as I will be out of reception after that. It's a big day on Friday and we need to get rolling as soon as possible. I will have my UHF on 18 when I run out of mobile coverage so you may catch me on that if you get close enough.

Excellent video Winston and suspect your drone is going to get a huge workout on future trips. Looks as though the weather was reasonably kind to you and some of the tracks looked quite dry.
