Mt Sarah / Buckland Valley HARD

Alpine National Park, VIC

See more trips

So the basic plan for this trip it take a few others on the same track I found a little while ago.

Watch the following YouTube video to find out what your signing up for: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AANZz8mjEv8

I'll be a little more prepared this time and won't be starting the track at 2pm haha.

The idea is to then summit Mt Sarah where hopefully we will find some snow and we will be camping on top of the mountain for the night.

This next link might inspire you or it might scare you away haha: http://4x4earth.com/forum/index.php?threads%2Fmt-sarah-vic-17th-19th-august-2012.20331%2F

I will actually be heading up Friday night and camping at Lake Cobbler if there are others that wanted to join me, otherwise refer to the "Lake Buffalo Picnic Area" meeting point.

I watched your video.. A few days ago and (I think one of your videos was s shared on 4wdtrip fb page and I found this one from your youtube profile) and watched it again today.

What makes this track so hard? I saw there's some parts that are quite rutted with water flowing in the middle of the track.

I'm asking coz I'm interested. I saw the forum post 4x4earth.com and I'm impressed and would love to go! I got a winch and recovery gear (snatch strap, snatch block winch extenders and all the works), also just installed recovery points at the front and got recovery hitch at the back and 32 inch muddies... And I also have a 2 inch lift sitting right next to the truck right now waiting to be put in in the next week.

I don't have lockers yet but I do have an LSD at the rear.

What would make my truck suitable to attend this trip?

Thanks

Hi Thurstain,

For starters video footage always tends to make things look a lot easier than they are due to the lack of depth perception.

The hard parts of the track are a pretty steep rocky hill climb which could be snow covered depending on the weather. And then an almost comp truck obstacle to climb over at the very end of the track. With no easy chicken track around it.

The track is also heavily overgrown in places. While this does not pose a challenge as such, most people probably wouldn't like driving through thick scrub.

You could probably still come on the trip and camp on top of Mt Sarah but just not do the track in the youtube video.

Fair enough. That's why I asked what makes it hard as youtube doesn't really make it justice by the looks of it. Although I don't mind thick scrub, more war wounds on the truck with adventure stories to tell :)

Anyway that's fine. Is there an easier track to get to the top of the mountain?

Thanks

Hi all
I will be joining this trip but I will leave the last spot to our members. I have already contacted Brad and asked him if I could join. So if the last spot is filled there will be 6 cars including mine.

Brad I may join you camping on Fri.

I have taken Friday off altogether and plan to leave Melbourne no later than 10am. Should be at Myrtleford for lunch & then I'll head bush and setup camp at Lake Cobbler. Depending on what I feel like, I might then do some more exploring. Might even do a bit of a night drive, who knows.

Sounds good, I haven't done night drive before so would be keen I'll see how we go might even try to get away around 2ish then.

Hi all,

I have discussed with Brad. We have decided to change the camping spot on Friday to camp grounds along Abbeyards Road. Brad will be there on Friday afternoon. He will check out all the campgrounds first until he finds the best one.

There are 5 camp grounds along Abbeyards Road (next to the river). The first 3 camp grounds are about 30mins drive from Lake Buffalo. The other 2 is over an hour drive.

1. Blades Campground
2. Tea Tree Campground
3. Manna Gum Campground
4. Abbeyards Campground
5. Mclver Campground

So if you want to camp on Friday, please check out the camps until you find him/us.

I have uploaded the map in the Photo section.

On Sunday I left Kelvin and the others and went looking for snow on higher ground, only found enough to make a few snowballs. We found some hunters at Guys Hut on top of Mt Sarah and had lunch with them. They said they got a dusting of snow on Friday night (when we were all getting rained on haha). Don't worry Thurstain you didn't miss out on much. When and if there is another snow storm this year I'll run an easier trip that you can come on.
