Fraser Island 4wdtrip

Trip starts from Swan Reach Victoria on the 12th Nov at 8AM (You can camp free at my property on the Friday night)

Day 1: Swan Reach Vic to Free camp area on the Yass River NSW Estimated travel time 5Hr 32Min (491KM) http://goo.gl/cgxKuM
Day 2: Yass to Narrabri (Namoi River) free camp area. ETT: 6H 45Min (607KM) http://goo.gl/maps/hexmRjzLKf22

Day 3: Narrabri to Condamine River free cam area (near Yandilla QLD) ETT: 4hr (393KM) https://goo.gl/oly9e
Day 4: Condamine River to Rainbow Beach ETT: 4hr 44Min (404KM) http://goo.gl/maps/Fg6DwqZ7LDv

You will be required to be at my place in Swan Reach on the Sat 12th Nov before 8AM (welcome to come camp on my property Friday arvo/night) OR can meet at rainbow beach on  Wed 16th . Take 4 nights to get there up the middle of NSW/QLD, 5 or 6 nights on the island then return.

Once on the Island we are staying at the Kingfisher Bay resort for 2 nights. The group can head off in any direction etc from that point on, anyone welcome to stay at Kingfisher as well but totally up to you. We can meet up again on the Sat 18th and travel to Dundubara where we will make central camp point for the next 4 nights. We expect to leave the island on the Tuesday 22nd for trip home. Return trip to be worked out on the Island and is open for discussion. I have to be back by the 27th at the latest.

I will be taking a camper trailer so anyone is welcome to as well. Obviously everyone needs to be self sufficient and have ample fuel, water, food, grog etc. Gympie is the last pace before Rainbow beach, we plan to stop there to stock up for the Island. Rainbow beach has a Shell Fuel stop. According to research I did there is also a car wash at Rainbow Beach with underbody protection wash system. Self use car wash is $1 per min, underbody wash is $5, return under body wash is $15. Visa/MasterCard is accepted. Click HERE for their website.

You will also need to organise your own permits and camp permits.

Mantaray ferry to Fraser Island: Car $120 return Car and trailer $180 Return.

Fraser Island Permits: (MUST be organised BEFORE you get on the Barge, no permit no access)
Vehicle access permit: $74.70 (one month permit) Details can be found HERE
You can also purchase online HERE The above fee includes camping on Rainbow Beach which we will be doing.

You also need a camping permit for Fraser Island, this gets complicated because you have to book. You have to join to login then you can make a booking etc. It is not easy and you will need to be patient. Remember you need a vehicle access permit AND a camping permit. You can not just get a permit for the island it is divided up into many areas. Trying to figure out where you will be at a certain day is the challenge.  We will be staying at the Dundubara (Trailer) camping area. (18th, 19th, 20th, 21st)

DISCLAIMER: While we are travelling in a group and I have organised the trip this is as far as it goes. There is no responsibility on my part for vehicle damage or personal injury. I advise you to have insurance and be responsible for yourself. I will attempt to provide as much information as I can and assist where I can. Please ensure you research the Island and its surrounding areas as well. The better prepared we all are the fewer issues there will be.

UPDATE:

Going by the tides map Wednesday the 16th will be high tide in the morning from 850AM so we will likely take the Hook Point bypass Rd which will take us out to just past Durlara then on to the beach again, from here we will travel up the East side of the Island along the beach to Cornwells Rd then head accross to Kingfisher Bay. See Island map and tide time in the files area. I have also marked the map in purle showing our direction on the first day.

DATES: (You do not have to follow us you can go your own way it is your choice once on the island)

Day 1 and 2: Kinfisher Bay Resort (16th 17th)

Day 3,4,5,6 Dundubara (Trailer) camping area (Or tent area) We will use the Dundububara camp area as our main camp as it has toilets, fences, water etc and is sutiable for kids/family. (18th, 19th, 20th, 21st)

NOTE: Maps updated to show the areas to book camping sites. (fraser-island-map.jpg shows the points we are staying at)

Hey Matt how are you? I will certainly ask some as we get closer, still researching and seeing if enough will want to come or not. I have planned it before only to have to pull out with work problems. Its a big trip but one i have been wanting to do for years.

been well mate, flat out busy with work. Well worth doing Fraser, it was our first ever 4wd trip and I had bought the first Disco purely for the trip and planned to sell it when we got home. I was hooked on the 4wding and well the rest is history...

Agree with Matt; well worth going to Dave. There is a video on the forum of our trip there a couple of years ago that might give you an idea of what the island has to offer.

Hi Dave,

Perhaps you can set a minimum number of vehicles or if you can indicate how many cars you need before you can commit to run this trip. This will help people to plan.

For instance, if you need at least 10 cars "interested" or "Going" before say, 30 June.

It's a bit confusing at the moment as this is not for "Express Interest". If you want to find out how many people are interested before you comitting a trip, post it in Forum/Express Interest.

You have 11 interests already, so this trip should be a "GO" ? .....

I am interested to drive up in a group (maybe) but I will have to do my Fraser Jaunt at a later date as these clash with my work placement in brissy in November as far as I know.

I am in Wagga Wagga, NSW

Hi Dave, just had a look over your plans, a few little tips, polish your cars really well before you go, it makes a massive difference at the end with salt damage, treat the underside and engine by with Lonotec or simular before you go makes a massive difference to rust under your car and the underbody protection at Rainbow will be gone before you reach camp. Finally check the height of the high tide because the inland track is as rough as guts and getting on and off it with a trailer is as hard as the beach at high tide, if its a average or lower than average high tide try sticking to the beach, just lower tyre pressure and a bit slower

Hi Matt, Thank you very much for the tips, I will have the Lanotec cans in hand. Have studied the tide charts and plan to go on first day around mid tide. So should be ok. Thanks again for the tips mate, taken on board.

Hey,

I SHOULD be good to go. I still have a few more big ticket items to track down, build a set of drawers and fit a winch. I may also get a synchro looked at, but otherwise the old girl is right to go. If worst comes to the worst I guess I could meet the group on the island after you've stayed at the resort for those couple of days.

I'll fill you guys in closer to the date, but I'm quite confident that it'll be fine. I've finished drawing up the plans for the drawers, the diffs have been fitted, and there's a few things like the roof top tent and such on Gumtree if the 4wdsupacenter doesn't have any in stock - which I'm guessing they won't.

That is unless there's someone in the waiting list that desperately wants to go and is more ready than I am? I was going to go on a solo trip, but a trip to Frasier Island with a group would be better.

Hi Dave,

Sitrep for me is this; got the car back from the mechanic today - a few days later than I had hoped. I drove it around a couple of hundred km today picking up stuff and it seemed to be fine. I did notice a couple of pools of oil under the car when I parked it on the street which I am unsure if it was from mine or someone else's. I'll look into it tomorrow sometime.

I've also almost finished the install of the rooftop tent. I needed longer fixing bolts to attach it to the roof rack. I'll also be living out of tubs rather than a set of drawers. I should survive though.

As for the trip up there, if I leave Saturday I'll probably be trailing a couple of hours behind. Meeting everyone on Friday will depend on whether I finish packing in time.

So yeah, if the oil leaks weren't mine, I'm good to go. If they are, well, maybe it'll be an easy fix and I'll still be good to go. You can look out for a green Defender with a black star on the bonnet (don't worry, not my choice of styling. It was like that when I got it haha)
