ANZAC LONG WEEKEND
Anyone interested in doing a trip along Caledonia River Track?

I have never drived this track before, but I have done Butcher Country a few times (Butcher Country is the track on the ridge above the Caledonia River Track)

Friday Night:
Meet in Mansfield or Jamieson. Camping at Granny's Flat.

Saturday:
Leave Jamieson and head to Licola. From Licola drive north to Tamboritha Saddle. Turn into Dingo Hill Road and up over Dingo Hill, a steep climb, and onto the Caledonia River.
Sunday:
Drive along the river crossing it several times. Then another long climb back up to the Howitt Road at Minogues Lookout. Camping at either Howitt Hut or at the junction of King Billy Track and Brocks Road.
Monday:
Driving Clear Creek Track which sits below the cliff faces of Mt Clear. Rejoining Brooks Road we continue on to Sheep Yard Flat, Merrijig, Mansfield and home.

I already have a few people on this trip (myself and 4 others all in 3 vehicles).

I am only looking for a couple of others that might like to join in.

I am setting a maximum of 5 vechicles for this trip.

NO SMALL KIDS, PETS, GUNS, DICKHEADS eg: loud music, drunked behaviour, wheelies, etc..

I did that track a couple of weekends ago, with a few people. No one had any problems with it. Hey, if you find my number plate in one of the bog pits down there, can ya let me know? Haha

Is a snorkel necessary for this trip?

Hi Dan
Good to know that the track was drivable by your lot a few weeks ago.
I'm guessing that the track is no harder than Butcher Country Track and that the river crossing are all fairly easy?
If I find your number plate I'll let you know.
Cheers Phill

Hi Callym
from everything that I have seen and can find out about the river crossing, they should be fine without a snorkel.
Glad to have you along. Will you be by yourself or have a passenger?

A passenger or two will be fine. I'm just wanting to know how many people there will be. Not wanting a huge group where it's hard to keep track of everybody which all takes time.

I'm not sure I've ever done Butcher Country Track. Most of the bog pits can't be navigated around, so you'll have to go through them. They're not bad though, they have solid bases. As for the river crossings, most of them were puddles. I don't have a snorkel and I didn't have any problems. If it was wet, I'm pretty sure I'd not have made it out though. Most of that would be down to fairly basic tyres though.

Outside of that, I'm pretty sure it'll be busy. We went past the first camp spot to find a larger one. The following 3 (I think, it was late and I'd had enough of driving by that time) were packed. Theres 5 or 6 along the track, so I'm sure you'll find one.

Thank Dan for the info. Sounds like we shouldn't have any trouble.
The main thing that I'd like to know is how long it might take to drive the track? Did you also go in via Dingo Hill track?

Hi everyone
Just wondering what time people think they will get to Jamieson? (or Mansfield, if going that way) I will be in Mansfield at the BP servo at around 8pm, then in Jamieson at around 8.30pm. You can meet at either place. Let me know where you'd like to meet up.

If anyone wants to leave earlier my sister and brother in-law (Brian & Pam) will be at Granny's Flat from mid afternoon. He is in a white Nissan Patrol Ute. Let me know if you are going to be there earlier so I can tell him to look out for you.

Does anyone have any questions they'd like to ask?

The trip report was interesting and t seems everyone had a great time. Even in standard form the Discos go well don't they. I've done a few little things to mine to help it off road.

Hi Callym
I plan to leave Granny's Flay by 9.30am on Saturday morning. It might be easier for you to meet us at Licola a bit before lunch as it's about the same distance and driving time to get there as it is to get to Jamieson from Mt Martha.
How does that seem to you?
My phone number is 0458802937
(phone service will be patchy at best once we leave Jamieson on Friday if you want to contact me after then)

Something went awry with that comment thread back there. Anyway, all good. I hope it's a great trip for you guys. Get me a few pictures please! We got down into the valley just on dark and drove through it at night, so I didn't see much. All in all, it was about three hours from when we finished descending to when we got to the camp spot, I think. It was about an hour and a half, maybe two to get back out.

Also, hell yeah the Discos are great! Any car I can scale the side of a snowy mountain in, with the climate control set to 28 and the heated seats on is great in my books. I've decided I need to do something like you have and get rid of the factory bumper. It's been through at least three now. I could also do with a winch. Too bad mine suffered a couple of things last weekends trip, or I'd probably be on this one!

Hi Dan
I read the trip report from the trip you did, it was pretty good. Thanks a lot of the info on roughly how long it took you to get through the valley. I'll make sure there a few photos taken and put on photos/my trip report.

I love my disco and like you my front bumper was getting a bit beaten. The one on my Disco is a Fine First (or at least I think that's what it's called) They're made in Britain and I got it off E-bay. You do have to cut a bit of the body work when fitting a winch but its not much and it was the tightest bar to the grill that I could find.
Maybe next time we'll get to meet up.

Hi Mark
I could only post as much as in the Trip Report section. It wouldn't add any more after that. I had written heaps more on the trip but it wouldn't add it to the page. I tried about halve a dozen times on writing the whole story and I was totally pissed off with it after it wouldn't add a thing and just when back to where to story finishes now.
