4x4 Expedition - Wodonga and beyond HARD

Wodonga / Yackandandah / Stanley, VIC

See more trips

On behalf of 4WDTRIP, I am heading to Wondonga on 7-8th Apr for helping a group of Journalists from Motoring.com.au to film a series of 4wd beginner tips.

I expect the filming will be finished on Friday afternoon.

We will then check out the area in Wondonga and beyond, possibly at Yackandandah and Stanley area. Note; this is not a high country trip that you need to travel 200km a day. This is more for exploring unknown area/tracks, possibly some expected hard and steep tracks so be prepared.

Apparently there are many great tracks and many of them are being used by the ARMY for training. One of the well known track is called "Long Tom". Well, not sure if I will try it but want to check it out.

Friday

·       6:00pm - Meet at Yarkandandah Foodworks

·       6:30pm - Head to Camp. There are a few camp sites just 5km south/east of Yark. They are marked as No.1-6 (they may not be sign posted). You will take Bells Flats Road heading south, and enter No.1 Link Road. Please keep driving along all the camp sites until you find us.

·

·       Break camp at 8am.

·       Go back to Yark for supply/toilet/fuel.

Mt Baranduda – 13km

·       Head north to Mt. Baranduda SP. This state park is small but with many steep tracks. Some of the tracks may be narrow or for bikes only so we will find out. There are only few access points and tracks may be gated off.

·       We will loop back and come back to Yark.

·       Through Yark and head ack to Camp

·       Continue on No.1 Link Road until we reach to Long Tom

Is your brother coming on this Antony?, i just thinking for entertainment.. you two are good value.. :)

Antony (Peloza79) Premium Member
Il bring my joke book. Anyhow there are 2 land rovers and a jeep coming, all the entertainment you need
09 Mar 2016
Matthew (discomatt)
Ha Ha, we are more than happy to keep you amused
09 Mar 2016
Allan (Big Pig) Premium Member
Yep it will be entertaining watching us 3 argue over who gets to snatch your sorry Toyota over some lame obstacle.
09 Mar 2016
Antony (Peloza79) Premium Member
No need for a snatch, got a winch hanging off the front for a reason, I will recover myself need be. Will be good watching the little big big trying to keep up with the rest of us though, can't wait :)

Um... should be an interesting weekend..... for us (Patrol Owners), we will probably miss all the actions/entertainment/winching/bitching behind us......

Hey, can you all help suggest some routes/tracks? .... Although I am leading the trip but I don't know much the area. I am happy for someone to lead the trip.

Hey Allan maybe Anthony forgot that the Landrover and Jeep went up that massive track without any assistance while the big LC79 had to winch itself over a branch hmmmm😜

Your lucky I cleared the track for you. I know, I'm a good guy :). Anyhow the way things have been going lately I hope getting stuck is my only problem

Lets not get ahead of ourselves , there is 5 of us on this trip that have to drive the soft sands of Sth. Aust. first. Just saying.
09 Mar 2016
Peter (GQ351C)
Ive never been 4 wheeling in that area before, hopefully there will be some challenging tracks to tackle 😆
09 Mar 2016
Alex (AlexPatrol)
Same here Pete, driven thru the area but never stopped, half the fun is exploring
10 Mar 2016
Peter (GQ351C)
I totally agree Alex, it certainly beets driving the same tracks over and over, really looking forward to it.
10 Mar 2016
Matthew (discomatt)
Yep never been out that way either, can't wait to see some different tracks, and in regards to All's post, from what I saw around carpenter rocks in Feb. some of you might be looking for a new car if your not careful, the soft sand nearly saw me well and truly stuck below the high tide mark, I was lucky to be on 12PSI, have an auto and bucket loads of torque. If I had a manual and needed to gear down it would have been a very rushed and stressful recovery...
10 Mar 2016
Matthew (discomatt)
Have been having a look to see if I can find any details of good tracks up there and can't find any recent info although there does seem to be a lot in the local area.
Kelvin maybe you, or someone, could get hold of Albury Wodonga 4x4 club and see if they can point us in the right direction.

Good idea, will do. I think Anthony is planning some tracks as well.

Matthew (discomatt)
Just watched a video of Tom Long, looks like a good fun track but its all clay base and slippery as if wet, will need to keep an eye on the weather up there and if there has been a few days of rain I think the muddies will go on
13 Mar 2016
Allan (Big Pig) Premium Member
Dam right Matt , I have driven Long Tom in the dry and there is next to no rock or shale I don't think I would drive it if wet but would have a good look at it.

Are you guys keen to coordinate one of the meals so we can have a feast? I reckon a massive slab of meat from Costco would go a long way... and so on.
23 Mar 2016
Allan (Big Pig) Premium Member
Cooking a huge slab of meat takes away a huge slab of 4wding
23 Mar 2016
Jason (FauxBogan) Premium Member
I was thinking more along the lines of steaks, not a roast. You end up eating at 10pm with roasts. I'm all for wheelin.
24 Mar 2016
Alex (AlexPatrol)
Id be up for that, can do steaks with a heap of veg in the fire pit or even something like burgers are easy to do, put it all on a table and build your own.

Sounds good to me. Heaps less waste and less effort.

Hi all,
Seeing some of the tracks in the area on a map, I have just changed the trip level to HARD from Medium/Hard. If you are not prepared, please withdraw from the trip.
This is a 4x4 expedition. I have never been to the area so there will be unknown factors. Make sure you understand the risk.
Let me know if you have any questions.

I say I will be in Yak around 5.30-6.00pm, there is some camping choices 5 minutes out of Yak and close to Long Tom.
Also make sure your tanks are topped up , last fuel I think is Beechworth, please check for your self .
On this trip we will venturing into the unknown in search of interesting (challenging ) tracks, so be prepared for anything.

I won't know times until later in the week, depends on how work pans out for the week, got heaps going on at the moment...

Hi Alex,
Your coordinate should be correct for the No.1 and No.2 camp ground (On mudmap, they should Camp 1 & 2 at the same spot).
If you want, please see below coordinate for No.3 - No.6 camp grounds
No.3 55h 482335 5978158 (This is near the start of Yark Gate Road)
No.4 55h 482463 5976777 (This is at further south)
No.5 55h 483811 5978460 (This is at the Eastern side of No.1 camp, still on One Road)
No. 6 55h 484200 5978147 (This is at the Eastern side of No.1 camp, still on One Road)

Just keep driving through each camp until you find us.

Cheers, I found the track names vary between different maps but found it on one of the hema maps so all good
04 Apr 2016
Matthew (discomatt)
A lot of the tracks appear to be on my hema 6, at least enough to get me to camp so that's a good start
04 Apr 2016

Just a suggestion, the guys who get to camp first could , if they have some hand held radios turn them on to 38 and listen out for the others.

Top work big fella, if we all take home 1 bag each of other peoples crap it will make a difference in the long term.
Just imagine how much rubbish 4wdtrip could remove every year if each person filled half a bag every time they went out.

Hi all, looks like Jason may not be able to make it. Do you all want to cook a big feast on Sat night? I am happy to cook some "famous Chinese sausage fried rice" and throw in a few meat/steak/sausage to share........
Anyway, looking forward to this trip and see you all on Fri night. Remember to check the trip details and my uploaded PDF file. Let me know if you have any questions. Looks like it will be good weather and fairly warm too, so tracks should be dry and easy. Perhaps it will be better for us to tackle some steep tracks.
I may scout the camp area on Thur afternoon. I will update everyone if there is any changes in the trip details.
I will be on channel 38. Drive safe and see ya.

05 Apr 2016

Yea no worries Antony. I am not saying we need to cook/prepare the amount to feed all 8 adults. I thought we can just share them like a buffet with each one of us prepare your own amount :) All good.....

I am looking forward to some challenging action ,and Kelvin I have my weekend menu sorted thanks all the same.
Pete's mate was showing interest in joining this trip, do we know yet if Jase is out .
I also know someone who is interested in joining us.
05 Apr 2016
Trip Leader Kelvin (TREXGQ) Premium Member
Hey Al, I will confirm with Jase tomorrow.
I don't want anyone to join this trip if they are not on the trip list. It's a large group already. Due to the unknown area/track condition, I am happy to keep this trip as 9 cars maximum, no more than that please.
