Heyfield to Mt Buller Weekend Trip MEDIUM / HARD

Western High country VIC, VIC

See more trips

* NOTE - Trip itinerary has changed for the better (again). In the interest of a better trip I've reversed the direction. This will mean we'll be heading mostly uphill instead of down and we'll camp at better spots. It's also the same distance back to melbourne from both ends; about 2.5 hours. Meeting spot is now Cheynes Bridge Camping Area at Reids's Flat on the Macalister River; GPS 37°45.818'S, 146°40.068'E. It's about 20km short of Licola and hard to miss. I'll be there by about 5pm Friday.

I think the trip plan gets heaps out of a shortish weekend trip. This trip is 150kms of tracks and will cover a fair amount of ground, so we'll be leaving fairly early Saturday morning. It's best if you stay the friday night at the camp spot if you can. We'll zig and zag our way from the Licola region up to a camp ground on Butcher Country Track. On the first day we'll be taking tracks like Dingo Hill, B1, Chromite Mine and Burgoynes. The second day we'll head through King Billy and Howqua Hills ending up near Sawmill Settlement. If the weather is great we'll gain time and be able to deviate from the plan. There will be huge camp fires and amazing rivers to camp near.

You'll need fuel reserves for this trip; bring jerrys! You'll need fuel for about 220kms. The last reliable fuel is at Heyfield for the entire trip; but you can go to Mansfield or Mirimbah on the way out. You MUST have mud tyres for this trip! You must have front and rear recovery points and be completely self sufficient. You must have a working winch, etc, etc. You must have a well serviced vehicle, not a weekend beater for this trip. There are serious tracks on this itinerary, so please only join if you're ready for it.

On a lighter note, I'm looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones. Family are welcome to come along and PM me if you have any great track ideas for this trip; I'm happy to take ideas on board.

Hi Folks,
Unfortunately I can't run this trip on interest alone. I need people to commit or I'm going to pull the plug on it. I guarantee it'll be a ripper trip with some great tracks.

I'd be all over this but have a sport commitment on Saturday unfortunately. Sounds like an awesome trip plan though, hope it comes together.

Hey Folks,
I need atleast 3-4 people to run this trip. I'm not sure why no one is committing. My experience level? I've been on over 50-60 trips in the last three years and run half of them. Other than that... I've got no clue.

I will join you, did have a 5 day trip booked for the middle of march but that had to be cancelled so this is a great fill in. Once I have work plans sorted for the Friday will confirm what time I will be at camp or organise to meet up on the road somewhere.

Hi Folks, Can everyone please confirm that they've seen the new itinerary and meeting place. The trip is going to be heaps better in the new direction.

I've got a chainsaw but everyone should bring one if they have it so only one doesn't get a flogging all weekend.

I'm not 100% what time I'll be leave town so I'll have to meet you all there.

new plan looks fine, better to go up than down the challenging tracks, I will have my chain saw, just need to give it a quick sharpen and service after giving it a good workout at last weeks camping trip to Tocumwal. Quality river red gum, that stuff is like cutting concrete

What time you thinking about leaving tomorrow matt
03 Mar 2016
Matthew (discomatt)
I will be leaving Belgrave at 2.30 - 3.00 to beat the Friday peak hour, last thing I need is sitting in traffic on a stationary freeway again, have spent hours doing that in the last 2 days

Trip Leader Jason (FauxBogan) Premium Member
I'll likely be leaving Mordialloc at about 2-2.30 so we'll both be there in good time. If the timing is right I'm going to stop in Heyfield for a quick bite an fuel on the way through. See you all soon.
