BEGINNER'S trip to Lerderderg EASY

Lerderderg State Park, VIC

See more trips
Please note that this is purely for beginners! I am running this trip as a passenger while my wife takes her truck out for her first off road experience. The loop planned is an easy one with the aim of learning the basics in 4wding. I want to impart some knowledge about the correct use of high and low range selection, airing down to suitable tyre pressures, basic recovery techniques (though it will be without demonstrations unless in the unlikely event someone does get bogged). I will give a brief talk about recovery equipment that is a necessity for doing 4wd trips as you advance. This is an ideal trip for a first or second time off-roader to get out there and try some relatively easy tracks that have a few steepish sections and maybe some ruts. Stock 4wds with low range selection are suitable.

I will be on radio giving guidance to anyone coming along if you are unsure of the line to take and I will walk it through in front of your vehicle if necessary.

A uhf radio is mandatory for the trip, as is proper recovery points. I know this is a little hard for beginners to ascertain, please look in the photos for this trip as I will post images of points that can be used for winching or snatching. They CANNOT be TOW or TIE DOWN or TOW BALL points. These are not designed for pulling a heavy 4wd out of a stuck situation and can create a deadly missile if the point breaks under load.

If you have any recovery gear like snatch straps and shackles, etc, please bring them. However if you don't, don't worry as I have the basics covered. I also have a compressor that all are welcome to use at the conclusion of the trip to re inflate their tyres to road pressure.

Bring lunch, drinks and toilet paper as well. There are no toilets where we are going so if you need to go then it's behind a tree around a bend.

Meet at 9am, should be finished by 3pm or so. Will start out with a few fun little tracks to warm up around the old quarry then head out along the loop as planned.

Winston, re recovery points: I have a 2015 Jeep Cherokee (Limited 4wd + Low) but no recovery points (so much for don't hold back!) and as yet no after-market solution for this reasonably new model. I have a Mopar tow bar and recovery hitch for the rear but nothing for the front - is this adequate? In this vehicle I only intend to do easy/medium tracks

Hi Tony. I am a little reluctant to say yes in entirety, simply because if you were to need recovering from the front you would be stuck. I personally would not attempt any front recovery of a vehicle without suitable points, purely from a safety perspective. You'll find that medium difficulty tracks can often result in the need for a vehicle needing a snatch or winch to get out of a bog. I've seen it first hand when the points aren't rated for the heavy load involved in a snatch and watched a shackle and mount launch through another vehicles rear window. It was lucky the driver wasn't hit.

It's up to you as a driver if you want to attempt a trip without recovery points knowing that other drivers won't assist if you do get stuck.

You can always get a steel fabricator to make something for you instead of looking for an off the shelf solution.

Thanks Winston, yes I wouldn't even try a recovery from the front unless I had recovery points so I'll have to wait. I see one of your photos is a hitch receiver at the rear so guess this is ok for the back

It's a 5 tonne rated recovery hitch. Designed for high loads in snatching. Always use that, never just put your tow pin through the snatch loop.

Hi all, it's just been brought to my attention that McKenzie's Flats picnic area is a little ambiguous to find in google maps etc.

It's at the northern end of Lerderderg Gorge Rd. It's a dead end at the picnic area so you can't miss it.

As you are coming into the area have your uhf radios switched on and on channel 24, if you are lost try contacting me. It's very easy to find though.

    Hi Winston,
If I can help in any way let me know. I'm up there about 1-2 a week at the moment. I led a trip up there today and taking another tomorrow. I see you have a lot of interest in the trip so if you wanted to run a second group (your track choose) I could lead it for you meeting up for lunch.

Thanks Winston. The maps on the internet are very vague. Looking forward to meeting you on the day.

Hi Mano, if you look on the members list for this trip you will see that some members are listed as going and some are interested only, I assume if you are listed as going then you are.

This trip could be interesting after todays rain. See you guys tomorrow.

    Hi all,

Tomorrow will be potentially a bit more of a challenge with the rain today. We will take it slowly and carefully. Our vehicle is on road tyres so I will evaluate all the tracks as we proceed and if anything is dangerous or too hard we will look at other tracks.

Confirming members for the trip are us, Phillip, Andrew, Lee and Bill (and peoples passengers).

See you all at 9am at Mckenzies Flat Picnic area. If you are running late or unsure of where to go call me on 0412 611 732 as early as possible as I usually lose reception on the road into the park. Otherwise try on UHF channel 24.

Hey Winston, I'm looking at having a play at Lerderderg State Park this weekend and stumbled across your trip which looked fantastic. I noticed you're using the factory recovery point and what looks like an aftermarket one on the other side at the front.

I've been struggling to find somewhere that will do a recovery point for the paj and was wondering where you got yours and what your thoughts are on the factory one as I've heard varying opinions on it.

Hi Ryan. Geez I haven't had the Paj for 3 years now, long gone. As for the recovery points, they came fitted when I bought it.

Maybe try giving the guy's at Auto Parts Co. a buzz. They're in Sydney but ship nationwide, and know their stuff, Jason is a very helpful guy, tell him I referred you and he will look after you.

Ah what a shame I'm loving mine so far, thanks for the reply I'll give them a try.

They're underrated as a vehicle, especially those older models from mid to late 90s, NJ, NM etc. Its surprising how much punishment they will take and how far you can get them.
