Lerderderg/Wombat forest beginner’s trip EASY / MEDIUM

Lerderderg / Wombat forest in VIC, VIC

See more trips

Due to the interest in the last trip I am running this trip again. If you looked at the map and itinerary from the last trip please look the updated version. If this trip fills and there is still more interest I'll run it again so don't worry if you miss out.

This is a beginner’s trip to Lederderg state park.

If you haven’t had much experience off road this will be a good trip for you.

This is not a training trip but the tracks we will be driving are easy/med to practice on.

This trip is for people who have fairly stock vehicles. (No lift, no winch required. Road tyres ok, all terrains better. Mud tyres not requied) So please if you have off road experience or a very capable rig leave the spot for someone else. These tracks will be easy, anyone with a twin locked 35in rig will find this very boring. If you know the area very well can you please leave space for someone else.

  • You'll need a tyre deflator and compressor, handheld or rig mounted uhf radio.
  • Bring lunch/snacks and drinks. There are tables and toilets the lunch stop but If you have a fold up chair you might bring it.

There is a petrol station in Gisborne for you to fill up before the trip.

Finish up 3-4pm

Hi guys, I can see that the trip is full, and I also cannot make this on the 9th anyway, however I would like to know a little about these tracks.

Although going out solo is a bad idea for unknown tracks (dont have a winch), there are a few in the forest that I know of which I have no issues doing alone. Are the tracks marked for this trip in that category Ie: No major bog holes where I would drown my 4by, and nothing too crazy?

Hi Vaughan,

These track are drivable on your own. Take a look at the Itinerary. There is a small description of the tracks. there are tracks up there with big bog holes but I don't run these tracks on my trips. All these tracks can be done with a standard 4x4 without lift or big tyres. The last (check itinerary) track has a little mud but not much, Look at the link in trip report from last week. The tracks that have ruts have a way around.

If you are coming up this way and want me to come show you around let me know. I have a lot of time off till 18th Jan.

Cheers
James

Thanks James. I was a little unsure as I read your description and one part said about a steep slope 'testing skills'. Ive also looked at a few 4x4 guide books, and given there seems to only be 3 levels of track (easy, medium and hard), I have not yet been able to work out what these actually mean. Seems there could be a big difference across each category.

Will definitely give your map a run next time I am out that way, as the tracks sound more difficult than I have done but should be doable!

Really appreciate the offer for you to show us around out there, and I might just take you up on that offer some time, but unsure when ill be able to get out next!

Hope your trip is a success on the weekend!

The email for this trip come through at 1 am this morning, yet the first comment was 16 hrs ago? The emailing system is not good at all for those that would like to go on these trips. Not everyone can sit on the website 24/7 in case a trip comes up.

I agree. I got excited to be an almost guaranteed spot as I was awake when I got the email. Alas, apparently not

James,
Great work on the map mate I think that's what newbies need to know which gear to use , you seem to have a bit of experience on the trip. I don't think they got it mate when you said: "This trip is for people who have fairly stock vehicles. So please if you have a bit of experience or a very capable rig leave the spot for someone else. These tracks will be easy, anyone with a twin locked 35in rig will find this very boring. If you know the area very well can you please leave space for someone else"

For more of you more experienced 4x4 people you will find it boring, but I guess it is up to James, I think James really does want to show newbies. People like Vaughan (BlackPajero) will get more of a buzz than what the more experienced guys would. Not my place to say but seriously please reconsider going on this trip.

Hi everyone,

Thanks for your responses. Kevin and Mark are both right, this trip is for beginners as the title suggests. If you have lots of experience and bigger rigs then might be bored and might want to lead a trip of your own where you will have more fun. You may have seen I have a 2” lift and 35” tyres but that doesn't mean my beginner’s trips will challenge me or my 4wd. I crawl over these track easily without lowering type pressers or using a recovery gear. This trip is for beginners to get there feel for the dirt and to learn a little about their 4wds.

I was up in the area today on a last min trip with a friend were we drove a couple of med/hard tracks. Where I did have to recover someone. If people want to drive these tracks I can give you the locations however I don’t know enough of them yet to run a full med/hard trip.

To sum up, easy/med tracks are on this trip. Anyone use to harder tracks would probable teach me a thing or two.

Thanks Leigh - much appreciated.

With the exception of going up and down a dirt track and through some mud on a farm my car hasn't been off bitumen since I built it and it's the first 4WD i've owned.

Looking forward to seeing how it goes.'

No worries mate, have a good one. I might make use of the excellent map that James created and drive the route on Sunday. Looking forward to reading the reports!

It you want to head up Sun Leigh let me know. I'm free. I have the new harder tracks I drove today and/or can explore more tracks I haven't driven yet. I don't like exploring in bigger groups as it can be hard to get 4-5 cars to turn around if needed.

I will say, stay away from Andersons Mill TK (AKA Car swallower) without back up.

Thanks James, that sounds good. I wouldn't mind giving those tracks you mentioned a go. I'll be in touch.

Hi, There seem to be a lot of people pulling out. I don't mind people with experience coming along on this trip as long as they relies the tracks are easy/med. and you are not expecting a challenging drive. This will e a an easy drive to experienced drivers but it is still still a good trip if you just want to get out in the bush.

Ricky (R1XSTA)
I'd fill the empty spot but would prefer have my brother in law along in his jeep also haha.

Have fun all.

Hi Ricky, I have opened another spot so you both can come. Grab them quick.

Legend. We will see you then.
I have a GU on 35s and John has a Jeep on 35s.

It'll be his second trip out and my third, so we're still learning the ropes. Plus never been here before.

Looking forward to it!!

That's good to hear. These tracks are good to practice on. I will show a short 3min video over lunch of a harder track up there with ruts and mud. depending on time and what people want to do we could tackle it once we finish other tracks. I drove this track yesterday with a Hilux on 31 road tyres. I did have to recover him in one spot.
