Walhalla to Dargo Madness MEDIUM / HARD

Briagolong /Licola/Dargo, VIC

See more trips

Because of the high volume of traffic that will be in the Walhalla area on the same weekend of this trip, I have decided to avoid the area altogether. With the aid from Alan (thanks for the idea Al & for help planing new route) please take note of new starting point. We intend to still do the tracks as planned for the Dargo area & a few new ones for the trip home:

Meet at The Quarry Reserve Camp Ground (not sure if there is drop toilets here?) on Friday in your own time. I hope to be there by 5pm ish. The camp ground is just out of the small town of Briagolong where you can get fuel & supplies if needed.

We leave camp Saturday morning & hit the tracks straight away and get to Dargo Pub at about lunch time. After lunch we will do Conway Tk & scoot around & go up Billy Goats Bluff Tk, head down & camp at Horse Yards Flats Camp Ground.

Sunday will be quite a bit of 4wding on some great tracks & heading to Huggets Crossing. We should arrive at Maffra (or there abouts on bitumen) by 3.30 to 4.00 to air up & head off home from there.

As per my original trip there will be many very steep tracks, river crossings & challangers along the way. There will be many oppertunities for stunning photos from the top of mountain peaks across valleys etc. There will also be many river crossings to contend with so the challanges will be as before.

I think that this new route might even be better than the original with much more 4wding on the Sunday with a shorter trip home on bitumen (by about an hour or so).

Just so we all clear we will be travelling DOWN Billy Goats not up , then the long crossing of the Wonnangatta then up Conways you will have awesomes views in your rear vision mirrors.
Indeed it will be a massive day Saturday , we will need to be moving in a timely manner all day .
Much looking forward to this one , I have driven all of these tracks ,most of them more than once.

Righto, I've been reliably informed that there is a huge group camping at Otooles for their annual gathering. I will have a look at the map over weekend to find a new camp site. Probably Merringtons but I'm open to suggestions.

Hi Allan. What if we do Comway first then, then up Billy Goats, then shoot around to Dargo? As I said, my first time wheeling in the area and a long time dream to do these tracks so want to do it the proper way.

I still reckon we can do all your tracks and switch some around and go up Billy Goats.
I would think there would be room for us at O'tooles on Friday night.
It's not the 4x4 earth gathering your talking about is it.
I will catch with you and talk about the direction we travel in.

Thanks mate. Yep, it's the Earth gathering.

Hey fellas, keep in mind this is the same weekend as the EARTH gathering so it will be very busy around there, you might not even fit into OTools so a rethink might be required as they will have hundreds of people coming from all over the country, there gathering is from Thursday to Monday
17 Oct 2015
Allan (allanmac) Premium Member
Dave, as others have said, it is the 4x4 Earth gathering and they get huge numbers arriving from the Wednesday, so campsites at O'Tooles will be limited to say the least. Also expect alot of traffic on the Friday arvo/night heading to O'Tooles, so as you said maybe look for another campsite.

If I may, my suggestion would be to forget the Walhalla area and head straight to Cheynes Bridge campsite for the Friday night. Next morning you can do a loop by heading up Cheynes Bridge Tk onto Burgoynes Gap Tk through Macalister Gorge then all your other tracks as originally planned. Yes a bit of a drive on the Friday, but it will save you a bit of time for your big drive on the Saturday.
Anyway, just a thought and would love to join you as you have some great tracks planned, but unfortunately work sometimes gets in the way.
PS: Added bonus is that everyone can top up with fuel in Heyfield if need be making it a little easier for those who might be a little tight with their fuel range etc etc.

Hi all. Thank you for jumping on board for this trip & to those interested.
As mentioned above by allanmac, I've looked up the other mob's web site. They have about 100 people booked in at O'Tooles. They booked their little adventure 12 months ago so with all due respect, I will change our first night. I am thinking of a couple of options. Keeping in mind the amount of traffic in the area because of above has thrown a spanner in the works. Nothing we can't overcome though.
I would still like to explore all of the tracks as mentioned in my trip details. Please bare with me as I ponder this change. This trip is still gonna be awesome.
Stay tuned.

Have fun and enjoy Dave, great to see you and Paul back into the wheeling. Will try and catch up on a trip sometime so I can return your 4WD ACTION stubby holder, although it is a little worse for wear, will see if I can find you a new one...
I might be going on the EARTH trip depending on work so will possibly see you on the tracks that weekend

Gday Dave,
How many other cars are you expecting on this trip that aren't joining through the forum?

Should be a cracking weekend!

G'day mate. I've invited 4 mates via SMS. 1 coming and 2 maybes and one no. The maybes will let me know in the next week or so. If the others don't come along I may open up another 2 spots (max.) on the forum? Will wait & see on that.

For those people that are still interested in this trip, is there room for more?
As I read more spaces will become available, but the number is still 6?

Hi Dennis. I said that I'm waiting on mates that I have privately invited to all confirm. Once I know my definite numbers there is a chance of opening up a spot or two. No more than 8 cars in total is my limit for this trip for reasons that I've mentioned earlier. So far I have 6 confirmed. As soon as I hear from the other two I will let everyone know.

Also, I hope to have the Friday night camp ground confirmed by the end of this week.

Hi all,
Please note that I have changed this trip from the first camp site on Friday night. This is due to the fact that another forum has a massive amount of people (100 4wd's) converging in the Walhalla area & camping at O'Tooles where we intended to stay. This will really slow us down so with the help from Al, please see the new trip details to be fully aware of the new camping spot for the Friday night.
Both alan & myself should be there by 5pm and be on channel so just call out on the UHF if you need guidance in. Should be easy though.
If you want to meet somewhere on the road for the trip up, just let everyone know what time you will head up & I'm sure someone will be heading up at a similar time.
Don't hesitate to ask if you have any questions.
I can't wait for this trip...great crew coming & we should all have a ball.

Gday folks...
this should be a great trip. it's weeks away and i'm already excited.

I'll be leaving work from Malvern on the Friday at 5pm if anyone wants to meet on the road? i'll stop for fuel in mafra but otherwise drive straight through to camp.

always love this part of Oz.

Hi David. Camp site location is on corner of Briagolong Rd where it meets Quarry Rd according to my Hema map.

David you can fuel up at Stratford unless you want to go through Mafra, camp should be only about 20-30 minutes from Stratford.

Dave, if it is The Quarries campground, they do have toilets. Unless things have changed in the last 12 months, there is a camp fee payable ($5 per person), payable at the Briagolong General Store. Not sure if payment is strictly policed though.

Thanks for that Allan. I'll ring the store & let them know we're coming & organise payment. Payback can be the form of a can of bourbon from everyone lol.

Trip Leader David (Paul Patrol)
Ok, I've rang and booked the camp site for the Friday night. The cost (unfortunately) is $10 per site which I'll pay on my way up Friday. I'd prefer & do the right thing & pay them the $10 as I'm sure the money goes to the up keep of the site.....It better be a bloody good site!!. There is a drop toilet there.
Please have ya 10 bucks for me on Friday nigh. Thank you in advance.
28 Oct 2015
Trip Leader David (Paul Patrol)
Oh, on the matter of numbers for this trip, as mentioned earlier I have invited some mates along privately. My maximum for this trip is 8. One has confirmed with me via private message on FB that he is coming (in another bloody Jeep). I would like to finalise the final spot by the end of this week at the latest.
For those of you on standby who would like to join this trip, I will open up for one more spot but only if said person can't come. So please keep an eye out for the potential last spot.
Cheers.

5 sleeps to go , starting to get the Big Pig ready ,sorting camp gear, planning my menu and of course making sure I have a full bottle of Jameson's I will also bring 2x fire in a box, could be a wet weekend,oh well.

David (DSPIES)
yeah i seem to be having p*ss poor luck with the weather at the moment.

On a positive note, rain always makes the driving more 'interesting'.
09 Nov 2015
Trip Leader David (Paul Patrol)
Not long to wait now 😃. Having just looked at the predicted weather, it looks likely that there will be lots of rain on Thursday & showers on Friday for the trip up. Saturday & Sunday should be fine & mild.

With this in mind, it it reasonable to assume that the rivers will be up a bit? We will stop & assess anything that looks a bit nasty as we go. Please ensure that your winches are working, that your recovery gear is in good nick and that your snorkels are sealed properly.

Can I ask that at least one person bring a chainsaw along please. I will have mine but last time I used it it played up a bit so a back up would be ace.

I'm not sure what time that you are all heading up to camp but I will be leaving Berwick at about 2pm if all goes to plan. I'm happy to meet up along the way. A good meeting spot would be the big Caltex Servo in Longwarry which is about 20mins past Berwick. I will stop there at 2.30 for those of you who would like to meet up.

3 more sleeps......woo hoo!

Kylie's not coming Al. Want me to sneak her chair along? 😉

Better leave her chair at home otherwise she might put a contract out on both of us.
Also are you sure you don;t need to change the meet up place in your trip description , we don't want anyone going to O'tooles by mistake .

I have updated the Friday meeting point due to the massive numbers of another group in Walhalla. We now meet in Briagolong The Quarry Reserve. Please bring $10 for camp fee for this camp site. Sorry for the inconvenience but very necessary.
