Ellis Track - Secondary Trip to Kelvins HARD

Due to overwheming popularity of Kelvin's trip, and not getting a look in, I am still heading up to Ellis. Feel free to join me. Please make sure that you have full recovery gear and a winch bitch.

Would be wise to bring tools and warm clothes in case you have to spend a few hours on the side of the track.

pack lunch and maybe a back up dinner as it can end up being a long day if there are recovery problems.

I will be bringing my 2 boys, 9 and 11 years old.

The plan is to leave after Kelvins trip but if we only have a couple of trucks, we may head up early.

 

If the track is dry it should be relatively easy going. However, if it is wet, it is going to be loads of slippery fun.

I don't want to have turn anyone away, so please adhere to the minimum requirements of the trip to save any awkwardness/embarrassment of being told you are not coming with us.

Hi Simon,
If possible, please run this trip an hour or so after our group, starting at 8:30am. This should give us time without bumping into each other. It will not be fun to have 10+ cars on Ellis track.

I wish this is my fav track but dont have my play toy any more thos is up with the best of them is aknarley track and add a sprinkle and it just gets better with this rain would be orsm

Simon, 1stly it would be great to catch up again after all these years, but I am not prepared to take my vehicle on that track. But what I was wondering was if you were prepared to have me tag along, park my vehicle at the start of the track & make a video of you guys driving the track?.

Hey Al, just a suggestion. May be you can park your car in town centre and meet Simon over there. I am not sure if it's a good idea to park your car at the start of the track, it could be stripped :)

Mmmm, didnt think about that Kelvin. I remember years ago you could leave your 4wd on a track & nobody would touch it; a unwritten rule amongst 4wders, but unfortunately not the case anymore. I will speak to Simon closer to the date about this.

Simon, my plan was to walk some of the track & video, jump in a couple of vehicles & get some in car footage etc etc.

Hi All. I will be coming on the trip and riding with Kelvin in the other group. Once the trip completes late Saturday, I am looking at camping out on Sat night somewhere at the top of Ellis track (I'll take the chicken run up in my own 4WD). Hi guys.. I will be leading another group. FYI.. this track is no joke.. you will need a winch that is in top/good condition.. the top part of the track "Rock garden" does not have chicken track.. you will likely winch it over so a rock solid rock slider may be needed.... any questions feel free to ask me or Simon.

No that was a separate trip. It was the same trip that the guy in the zook was going backwards and forwards about 30 times to get out of that deep bog hole. It was on a corner and every line was a bog hole.

I am in if no heavy rain sets in the week before and the track stays reasonable. by the time the first group gets trough the track will be torn up if wet. Matt I need a spotter so you can jump in my car if you want.

Thanx for the offer Joe but I already have a seat in another car in the other trip, will be a great morning and can't wait to head up this track again. Would take my car up but can't risk it as its also my daily drive and work vehicle, no car no work....

Joe you make a good point. Those trucks without clearance and decent sized tyres are going to struggle. If they are prepared to do a lot of winching we shouldn't slow down too much. Sometimes biting the bullet early and getting out the winch cable is quicker than spending 5 mins thrashing a section to move 10 metres.

What type of truck damage are we potentially looking at here guys? Flooded - water or crazy mud? Unavoidable panel damage - even with caution and a spotter? Overgrown pinstripe tracks....or....?

Happy to drive some hard stuff but not keen on breaking stuff just to get through a trip. I don't see any achievement in that. lol

Not flooded and not crazy mud either. Lots of slippery sections with boulders thrown in to keep it interesting. side steps are usually the first victims. This trip and Kelvins are currently full. We won't be taking any extras due to the difficulty of this track.

like most 4x4 trips its unknown from one week to another, I all ways pick the easy--to medium trips so I do the minimum damage to my car. I have been on this track this is very demanding. the trip is classed as HARD-----so the ball is in your court??

Well we are a week out. I currently have my my front CV's, King pins bearings and races and seals removed doing a rebuild. Can't drive my truck with the play tyres on anymore as it does does my head in. Had the shake at 75-85 but now I get it at 60. This may not be the cause but I thought I would give it a go anyway for piece of mind.
Glad I did it. No real contamination, but one of the lower king pins was rusting at the base and took a fair bit to get off. Had to wait until the entire knuckle/joint was off to remove it. Just knocking out the king pin races this morning and the rebuild starts.
looking forward to next weekend.

Okay guys. only a couple of days to go. Have got my front end back together now, so pumped to get out on the tracks again. Make sure your winches work and everything is in serviceable condition. We may end up eating lunch on the track depending on where we are at the time. So make sure you have an easy lunch just in case. I don't plan on doing any other tracks, but if we finish quickly I may do more.

I will be on channel 15 in the morning. Will be using 10 as an alternative if there is too much traffic on air.
If you are running a bit late, make sure you ring me so we don't stand around wondering if you are coming.

Hopefully it is only Kelvins trip and us on the track.
