Annual Victorian Ranger/BT50 Weekend EASY / MEDIUM

Alpine National Park, VIC

See more trips

The Annual Victorian Ranger/BT50 Weekend is on again for 2015.

Dates: 20-23rd November 2015
Location: Beveridges Station in the Alpine National Park 40km south of Porpunkah (Bright) at the end of Buckland Valley Rd.

Everyone welcome: male, female, young & old; interstaters more than welcome if they want to make the journey.
The Annual Victorian Ranger/BT50 Weekend is a great opportunity to get away for a few days and to meet fellow Ranger & BT50 owners of all ilk’s. To have a few beers (or not) and discuss our chosen vehicles; their problems, their potential, to share ideas and modifications and last but not least, do some wheeling in the magnificent Vic High Country.

There are only 3 hard & fast rules on this trip:

1. Rangers & BT50’s ONLY ... No exceptions! All models welcome (note there will be 4wdriving, so if you have a 4x2 then maybe it’s time to upgrade lol).
This trip isn’t called the “Annual Ranger/BT50 Weekend” for nothing: if you want to bring a different type of vehicle then don’t sign up for this trip. If you want to invite your mates in their Cruisers, Patrols, Jeeps etc, then it might pay to organize your own weekend away.

2. No morons! This event will be attended by a diverse group of people ranging from young to old, male & female. By all means feel free to have a drink or two around the fire and even use the odd bit of profanity here and there (situation depending of course). But if you’re thinking about getting shitfaced, doing circle work or hacking into healthy trees to burn on the fire then maybe this trip isn’t for you.

3. No dogs – Being a National Park

To stay up to date you can view original and ongoing post at http://www.4wdaction.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php…

Hope to see you there

This sounds like an awesome weekend ,when I read the guide lines I wished I had a Ranger, but I don't ,I hope you get a good turn out from 4wdtrip.
    25 Aug 2015
    Trip Leader Jason (JBird)
Cheers Allan, would love to make an exception mate but that kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it ;)

Well this is the 3rd annual trip we've held, and if the last two are anything to go by it should be a fantastic weekend. Numbers are increasing every year and the company is always great, and it just doesn't get any better than that.

    Chris (Cdolman1)
    Is this a day trip?
    26 Aug 2015
    Trip Leader Jason (JBird)
Chris, you're more than welcome to come up for a day if that's all you want or can do.

The idea is the "official" trip is over a 4 day period being Friday the 20th November through to Monday the 23rd November. These dates were chosen as this is the time of year when the tracks reopen after winter and also that working people can organize to take the Friday or the Monday off or both to get the most out of the weekend.

When all is said and done though, anyone is welcome to come up or leave whenever they like. If you'd prefer to only attend for a day that's fine, however just be aware that from past experience the boys like to hit the tracks early to get the most out of the days, therefore I would suggest if only coming up for a day (Saturday or Sunday for example) that you try to arrive at the campsite probably no later than say 9.00am otherwise you run the risk of no one being there at all when you arrive.
    26 Aug 2015
    Chris (Cdolman1)
Oh no I'm keen for the whole trip. Just wasn't sure of what was planned. It's my first proper 4wd trip

Hollycrap, I didn't realise we have so many Ranger/BT50 owners on our site. Calling all of you, you should really go out more and post some trips. Ranger/BT50 is way more capable than you can think of.

    Hi Chris,

All you'll basically need mate is your accommodation/sleeping for the weekend ie: tent, swag, camper trailer, sleeping bag, doona etc; your food and drink for the weekend (Bright is about 45km drive from camp site and has a supermarket if needed); clothes for the weekend and any recovery equipment you may have for your vehicle. If you don't have any recovery equipment don't stress too much as others will have some gear if needed...oh, and don't forget the toilet paper and shovel (or a porta potty if you prefer) as there are no toilet facilities at the campsite.

Shouldn't be a problem Kevin, just top her up before you head down Buckland Valley Rd. Worst case scenario bright is only 40 kays down the Rd.

I plan on bringing a 12v shower setup. Has anyone else used one or can give any tips on the whole shower situation. Ie water source how much too bring etc

    Stretch (Ranger Stretch)
Hi Chris. Don't think there's much water available on site, perhaps someone else could advise. As for other stuff, being what you need and maybe some wood for the fire.

I carry 80ltrs of water (under tray tank) and have a gas water heater, if the wife doesn't come I'll have plenty.
    Cheers.

I think the camp site's right on the river Stretch. I just asked Google. Although not having been there before, I'm not sure if it's 5 metres or 100 metres. Either way Chris, bring a bucket or two and something to heat your water in over the fire or just have a tub in the river. Nothing quite as exhilarating as a dip in an alpine stream.
    Cheers
    20 Sep 2015
    Trip Leader Jason (JBird)
Yup, as Mark said Chris : Buckland/ovens river runs right through the campsite and she's sure to be nice and cool.
    21 Sep 2015
    Trip Leader Jason (JBird)
There's a bit of history there for sure Mark. You'll pass the cemetery on your way in on Buckland Valley Rd and just across the side road there is the cemetery where all the Chinese miners were buried.

I usually put the fidge and other valuables back in the ute and only leave behind the tent etc. The ute keeps the fidge cold and you've got your drinks and food with you.

    Trip Leader Jason (JBird)
    Mark,

Like Stretch said, a lot of blokes will put their fridges in the car but at the end of the day it's up to the individual. I'm fairly certain that the weekend we're going will be fairly quiet up there and there are a lot of us going which means a lot of tents, campers etc congregated into one area, so hopefully if there are any mischievous folk floating around that might put them off.

I get like that with my camper when I leave it alone, but then you have to just drop your guard sometimes and put a little trust in people that they'll do the right thing ... and have faith in your insurer lol.

    Trip Leader Jason (JBird)
No worries Nick, good to hear.

I'm going to be asking all those heading up BEFORE Friday to let me know so that I can see how many are planning on arriving early. The reason for this is that at this stage Ian (Ranger50) & myself won't be arriving until the Friday morning sometime, meaning there probably won't be a dedicated campsite set up and Beveridges Station is quite a large area.
Once I know who is planning on heading up early I can then arrange with them to find an appropriate spot next to the river that is suitable for 20 or30 cars.

    Hi Jason,

I've got 4 & 6 year olds girls who have asked if there will be any other kids.

This is double loaded question, as if the kids/wife come this means camper trailer, if they don't, trusty old swag.

    Cheers, Josh.

    Trip Leader Jason (JBird)
    Hi Josh,

I can't really answer that one mate, according to those that have registered to attend there are 3 children listed as coming: how old they are and if they do end up attending is outside of my knowledge unfortunately.
Maybe those planning on bringing children can share some more light on their ages etc.

I'll have my camper and I believe Nick will be bringing his also, maybe along with some others. Plenty of room up there for them, and on the bright side there's less stuff to pack up every day before heading out ;) The way I see it, the camper cost enough and I want to get my monies worth lol.

Also, how is the drive in from Porepunkah in the evening (maybe dark)? I have done a few night drives before so I am fine with that, just wondered about track condition as I have never been up there before.
Will you be nominating a UHF ground channel for the trip?
    Nick
    07 Oct 2015
    Trip Leader Jason (JBird)
Nick, the drive in is fine, nothing to be too concerned about as far as roughness is concerned. From memory there is a cattle crossing at a property not far past the airport which will be on your right hand side not too far in from Porepunkah.
The road is asphalt until just past Goldie Spur Track which is about 13km's in, then dirt from there on.There is roaming cattle further along that graze along the road, though I don't know if they're out at night, but best to play it safe and assume they are along with the wombats, roos and possums etc.

I will nominate a UHF channel as the trip gets closer and will let everyone know.

Is this trip posted elsewhere? Is it 18 vehicles from this site or is it from this site plus more?
    19 Oct 2015
    Trip Leader Jason (JBird)
Adrian, the trip is posted at a few locations but the "official" count and thread can be found at http://www.4wdaction.com.au/forum/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=157047&p=1821182

The reason for this is because the very first annual ranger/bt50 trip came to fruition on the 4wdaction forums and it has just followed on from there since. However, seeing as the 4wdaction forums seem to have died in the arse a bit lately and that this site is better geared towards trip preparation, the chances are that we will be using this site as a base for the trip from next year on.
    19 Oct 2015
    Trip Leader Jason (JBird)
    Mark,

Back in the day when the pj/pk rangers first came out 4wdaction was the place to go for advice and tips etc as there were quite a few of us there, hence why a few of us started the Ranger trips. Nowdays a lot of the guys have gone their own ways and don't really use the site anymore.

    Hi Mark,

Done a few of the tracks such as Paddy's Hill, Dingo Creek, Twins Jeep, Mt Murray North and Blue Rag which isn't too far.
Out of all of those mentioned there wasn't anything really difficult other than some loose shale here and there, the worst probably being the short steep shaley climb to the Mt Selwyn helipad.

I guess I would class the tracks as moderate: nothing too difficult yet not that easy that you can afford to take them for granted.
There are still PLENTY of tracks around that area that I have yet to drive though so anything could happen ;)

If anyone attending the trip is planning on arriving at camp before Friday the 20th November could you please let me know ASAP either by replying here, PMing me either here or through 4wdaction, or emailing me on izonozi@hotmail.com

I need to sort out who is going to arrive first as I won't be leaving until Friday morning, which means the first person to arrive will have to choose a dedicated campsite.

Also note the chosen UHF channel is 13

    Thanks,

What day are you looking at leaving Troy?
According to exploroz.com, the coordinates are as follows:

    DEG: -36.985477 146.956909
    DMS: 36º 59' 7.72" S 146º 57' 24.87" E
    UTM: 55 H 5906738mN 496165mE

The campground is well signposted, you won't really miss it. Just enter via Buckland Valley rd at Porepunkah and keep driving straight along that road until you hit the junction of Selwyn Rd and Selwyn Creek Rd (right at the end of Buckland Valley Rd) then turn left and you should see a sign.

I'll be leaving early Friday morning and putting signs up along Buckland Valley Rd anyway if you're leaving after then.

Kirby & Nick, as far as I am aware at this stage there is only you two and Steve (XLT Ranger) that are heading up on the Thursday.
Not sure what time Steve is planning on arriving, but seeing as he's only up for the Thursday and Friday I'm assuming he'll get there sometime Thursday morning or around lunchtime; so keep an eye out for him when either of you get there.

Either way, whoever gets there first is in charge of choosing an appropriate campsite ( the joys of getting there early lol). There is literally tonnes of room at Beveridges, so on saying that the only real things we need to try to procure are:

    a) Somewhere along the river that has a nice waterhole for swimming/dipping/getting submerged ( a lot of the river is your typical high country rocky river type).
    b) A central/communal fireplace that we can all kick back around and spin a few yarns. Bear in mind at this stage there could be up to 30 vehicles attending and anywhere from 30 to 40 people...that we know of!

G`day Mark, its been a few years since I`ve done these tracks north of Dargo, for memory not so bad medium at most but as you know things change. But for the run into Beverage Station quite easy, from Dargo straight up Alpine Rd (Easy) then LHT into Twin Jeep Track, my guess (Easy/Medium) and RHT onto Mt Murray North Track (Easy) RHT to Beverage.
    Cheers Kirby

Hi guys & gals, I have added some photo's under the event. I purchased this hoodie a couple of weeks ago and it is too large for me. The size is extra large and I would like to get a medium. I purchased this top for $69 and have worn it a few times, if anyone is interested I will be selling it for $45 and will bring it to the Ranger weekend.
    PM me if interested.

Sorry if this is not allowed, just thought being all Ranger ppl it would be good to post here.

    Evening fellow campers.
I am looking to come up to arrive at the campsite at around 16:00 on Thursday depending on work in the morning. I'll be coming through Wang so will not be able to join you Kirby but I will hopefully find you up there! I'll try calling you (if your number is on this website) while I travel.
I won't be setting up a shower as its only a couple of days long.
Looking forward to relaxing for a but around the fire!
PS. Mark, I'm surprised I haven't seen you around - I'm from Wonga Park!

    Hi Mark,

I do carry my coleman hot water/shower with me in the camper at all times but most likely wont set it up for just 3 days, especially when there's a river right there (as cold as it will be). When setting up the shower though I just take a common sense approach and keep it back far enough from the river so that the run-off doesn't seep into the water: probably a good 5 mts or so.

Steve, nice of you to make an appearance lol ;)

    G'day!

Looking forward to the weekend and catching up with fellow Ranger and BT50 owners. Unfortunately we probably arent going to make it to camp until around lunchtime Friday, I hope that this is OK.

You've got to be kidding Markcc! I trust that you have analysed the situation and to the best of your ability tried to make it work, but sadly have found that it can't be done - you'll be missed and you will miss us! Haha

True Nickj, one more sleep. I'll start packing the car after work and will be on my way to freedom in no time!
To all the suckers that will be sleeping in their own bed on Thursday night, stiff bickies! I'll be waking up to a nice river and fire!

Yeah, I'm pretty shattered Jason. I'm sure the BIG MAN just doesn't want me to go. Just make sure there's plenty of pics in the trip report. There is always next year and perhaps some sneaky day trips thrown in before then. I'm sure between you and Steve you'll be able to make a good representation of the "old regulars". Have fun!

What a great trip Christopher and I enjoyed it very much, great bunch of people. Blue Rag is now crossed off our list. Thanks again go to Jbird and his apprentices Nick and Donna great pics guys, I enjoyed the banter as I think we all did, both these vehicles Ranger and the BT's are more than capable of handling any tracks Australia has to offer.

Comment on the snow trip: don't the BT's have heater issues.😁 thanks again guys sure to see you all on the tracks again soon.

    Ladies & Gentlemen,
Thanks for a great time away. Thanks to JBird for getting it all happening and being the face of it. Thanks to Nickj for not waking me up on the Thursday night when you rocked up with your camper and slept on a very uncomfortable angle. Thanks to Alan and Monica* for staying away from me on Thursday night - the peace I enjoyed was amazing! And thanks to everyone for not snoring overally too loud and for being top class citizens while on the tracks, around the campfire and over the CB's (even though it was more of a talk-back exercise with JBird and myself on the Friday!)
I enjoyed all aspects of getting away and would do it again with you all, so hopefully it will be this good at the next one!
Thanks for all the photo's people have uploaded. Some absolute rippers in there!
Peace out and catch you all on the next one.
