Now it's your chance to explore this amazing state forest with some of the best iconic 4wd tracks in Victoria. Welome to Pyreness Range State Forest.

Pyreness Range SF is right next to Avoca, 2.5 hours drive from Melbourne.

Pyreness Range has some unique terrain you can't find in other places in Victoria. It has some very steep rock hill climb, creek crossing and spectacular view from Governor Rock Lookout.

Of course, it has one of the toughest iconic tracks in Victoria, Old Bluff Track.

Last year I ran my first trip to Pyreness Range and we came down Old Bluff Track easy section.

Sat (22 Aug)

On Sat, we will start at Old Bluff Track. It has 3 sub-tracks to choose from. They are Medium, Hard and Extreme. We will try all of them depending on the weather, 4wd setup and track conditions. We will also have a small game to test your driving skills and 4wd capability.

Old Bluff Challenge (to be confirmed)

The rules

Medium Track (1 point), Hard Track (2 points), Extreme Track (3 points)
Each car will select the tracks they want to drive.
Each car can drive multiple tracks (e.g. You earn 5 point if you drive both Hard and Extreme)
0.5 points will be deducted for each winching or recovery
We will calculate the total points of each car and each group (Jeeps, LC and Patrols)

It's cold at Pyreness Range, we will setup a camp fire at night. Bring your own food and drink. Kids are welcome if you feel comfortable and safe taking them to hard tracks.

Sunday (23 Aug)

We will spend the rest of the weekend exploring the area, check out and tackle some of the best tracks it can offer.

This trip is only for experienced 4wders with well setup 4wd. The following requirements have to be met to join this trip.

IMPORTANT: DO NOT bring along extra vehicles. We will not accept any 4wds that are not in the JOIN list.

33"+ Muddies (or minimum 32" with diff lock(s))
Winch
2" suspenion lift+
Sorry, no "P" Licence on this trip. You have to have full licence with a registered and insured vehicle.
Trip Leader reserve the right to refuse anyone from joining the trip.

Thanks James, thing is my wife has her V8 supercar drive that weekend so I cant make it but I was reading in the comments that Kelvin may have to change the dates.

I hope this does not affect you guys too much, but there is a state championship rally running in that forest on the Sunday.
There may be a lot of closed roads.
The link has details of the event director, he should be able to tell you what roads will be closed.

This trip could be affected by the Rally event next week. I will contact the event organiser and see if it's going to affect our trip. If yes, I suggest we change location as most of us can't wait to spend a weekend 4wding/camping :)

I am happy to suck it and see ,we all have the vehicles to be able to take any route we need to avoid this rally, I am excited to be having a crack at Old Bluff, if this track is of the agender I may have to wait to the following week as I will be up there again.
A lot of the rally drivers are staying at the same motel Jase and I are staying at.

Good news! The Rally event should not affect too much of our trip. We will be able to access Old Bluff Track on Sat. In fact, we may check out the Rally event on Sunday. See below response from the Rally event organiser. I will upload the rally event map in the file section. You can download it if you are interested to know where the route is. So just to confirm, this trip is still going.

Attached is a copy of the route which the event has approval to close from Vicroads, DELWP, & Pyrenees Shire.

On Saturday 22, the road will remain open, though competitors will doing recce, & officials preparing stages so an increase of traffic will be present. Our competitors are advised that the roads are open, and every one is strictly require stick to 60kph max when on the competitive roads.
On Sunday 23rd, the roads that we are using will be closed, and strictly have no access.

Access to the camp grounds at the waterfall will still be maintained at all times Saturday, and via a detour on Sunday (A section of Vinoca Rd will be closed). From an events perspective, we have no issues if you guys are on 4wd tracks to the south of our marked route (Main Break Track to intersection of No2 Creek Track through to Vinoca Rd will be closed).

There will be mix of officials & bunts present on all roads, 4wd tracks & Motorbike tracks, so the route should be clearly defined for the Sundays competition. I do prefer that you perform any spectating at an official spectator point.

Feel free to cal me if you have any additional concerns. Otherwise I hope the forecast rain works in your favour, as it’s only going to make our lives a little hard!

If anyone wants to meet up and go together on Sat morning, we can meet at the Shell servo 5:45am before we get on Geelong bridge. We will leave at 6:00am sharp. It will take 2 hours to Avoca but the speed limit may be reduced due to morning frost, so I will leave 2.5 hours travel time.

Hi all,
Here are some items you should bring for this trip.
Swag or tent, sleeping bag (for sub-zero temperature), torch, chair, table, camping cookware, extra winter cloth, recovery gear, axe and chainsaw (if you got one),
Food, .... the list go on. We are not far from town centre of Avoca, you can resupply if you miss anything. There is an IGA.... hope this helps.

It's been an awesome trip. In fact, it could be one of my best trip. Loving all the hard tracks, location, food and bunch of great friends and 4wders. Looks like Old Bluff Challenge has set a new standard of our 4wding :)
