Tallarook 'Take Three' MEDIUM

Tallarook State Forest, VIC

See more trips

Well folks, am going to head back to Tallarook for a 3rd time in just over a month....yes.

I have listed this trip as 'private' and have sent those invited a message, so  I would  appreciate everyone letting me know asap, as to whether they wish to join or not.

I do not need to go through all the requirements etc, as you are all experienced 4wders & will have all the appropriate gear for the day. In regard to tyres; I will leave that up to you but if the forecast is correct, some rain is expected for next week so muddies are probably best.

There will be a few medium tracks that we have  done previously but we will head to Phone & Steep for those who want to do these. I want to go UP Falls Creek Track as well as a few others that I have not driven for a number of years. Most of these are 'seasonal closures' so this is the main reason I am running this trip on the 30th.

FYI, the people I have invited are; Matt (Discomatt), Neil (love24wd), Allan (Big Pig), Peter (GQ351), Tony (le Dakar) & Kelvin. Would love to have Gary join us, but unfortunately he is out of action as we all know. I have left one spot open at this stage, so may or may not invite anyone else; guess it depends on how many of you guys plan to come along. As I said, let me know ASAP if you are 'in'.

Hi Allan, Thank you so much for the invite. Unfortunately I will have to give this a miss. My car is still not performing 100% as I can still hear the bearing noise from the clutch at the end of last trip. I may have to give it a good look by a workshop. Since this is a Private Trip, you will have to send the trip link (http://www.4wdtrip.com.au/trip.aspx?tripid=211) to all the people you want to invite or they will not find out about this trip. Thanks mate Kelvin

Hi Allan. Couldn't help myself. I am in. My daughter is interested in 4WDing, so i will be bringing her along and letting her drive some of the milder tracks. Looking forward to 'Take-3' (sounds more like a movie sequel). Pitty Garry won't be coming along.

Great to see that Allan & Pete have also joined the trip, just waiting on Matt & Neil to confirm if they are coming or not. Guys, let me know if there are any tracks you would like to do on the day, whether by name or description if you cant remember the name. There will be a few tracks we will revisit, but doubt we will do Bills again as none of us going like bogholes. As mentioned earlier, the one track I want to do again is Falls Creek so plan is to include it on the day. Guess it will depend on how much rain we get, but again let me know in the next few days so I can work out a basic plan for the day.

BTW, video of 'Take Two' is now up.

Good to hear you are joining us again Matt. Just think of all the $$$ you are making by being away...lol

The Paj has a shocking vibration in it atm, so will need to get underneath to check how much damage it got on 'that track' last weekend as I also hit a couple of rocks that may have caused some damage.

Great news guys; trip is now full & I will leave numbers as they are. Not sure if anyone is aware, but according to Gary, the general store at Strath Creek makes a mean toasted sandwich.

Matthew (discomatt)
thats no good about the mighty Paj, hope nothing to nasty under it maybe just a wheel out of balance, dropped a wheel weight off maybe. I also had some nasty scraping noises coming down that track but a little surprisingly no damage which I was very happy about. Just as well another 800km week for work but at 78c/ km I'm not complaining. Am really looking forward to a Telstra vehicle though...

I know it's not Tallarook but just across the road at Mt Dissa is a track called Ladder track, there is a bit of confusion about the name of this track depending on what map you use,it's a hard track but have driven it twice in the Pig,if time permits would be good.
21 May 2015
Tony (le Dakar)
I would be happy to join you on that one Allan. I went down it a few weeks ago in another (huge) vehicle, but never on my own. I have wanted to go up it, but each time i have been near, I was on my own. If time permits after ''Tallarook Take-3'', ill be there with you. Cheers. Tony.

Hi Allan. Spoke to Gary tonight. Car is a write-off, but he is allowed to drive around for another month or so. He is interested in Tallarook Take-3 (he was not aware of it). He may take his car, or he may ride shot gun with me (or any other car that is happy for a passenger). Would you be able to re-send an invite to him. Thanks Allan

To answer a few questions;
1. Matt, will check paj out tomorrow. All was fine driving home after trip, took it to carwash next day & a couple of strange noises. Drove it yesterday & it was worse; fingers crossed it is nothing major.

2. Allan, dont mind going to do 'the ladder', but looking at both maps, it is a fair distance away. Am happy to' go with the flow', but if we do a couple of tracks at Dissa, will limit the number of tracks in Tallarook.

3. Tony, I will contact Gary.
22 May 2015
Matthew (discomatt)
My bet is drive shaft and/or uni joints, hope its a easy fix!!

As far as Dissa goes, is it a winter closure area, maybe leave it to another day if its to far out of the way.

Gary is welcome in the Disco if he can lower his standards and spend the day in a pommy POS

Hi Allan. How did you go with the Pajero? What was the noise ? Did you get it sorted ?. Tony

Is at mechanics now Tony. Am thinking, hoping, it is only wheel bearings but the amount of movement in both front wheels is a little disconcerting. Not sure why but am always getting wheel bearings replaced.

BTW, sent invite to Gary but no reply yet. Kelvin might be coming now but sure he will confirm one way or another in the next few days.

Has he got it already Matt?

Dont worry, I wont be going near any bogholes this trip. Am presently trying to work out a basic plan for the trip that will include some of the good tracks in Tallarook with a bit of flexibility if we want to head towards 'Dissa'. Have checked what is seasonally closed in Dissa; basically nothing so if we dont get there, a good excuse to go there another time.

Hi Matt. The Lux is in the suspension workshop (not the workshop that installed the new suspension package- That was Opposite Lock Epping) at the moment ascertaining the issue. They reported that the rear leaves had completely sagged onto the secondary leaf pack causing it to be stiff as buggery (as you had identified the other weekend). He said it had dropped to a height lower than original specs (prior to the new Tough Dog suspension package being installed). I am pretty pi#$%ed off. The suspension from Tough Dog is only 2-months old. The suspension place said it appears the leafs tempering had failed. They are re-tempering the leafs as we speak which will give an additional 40mm lift and the softer ride (this should bring back the traction I had before the new leafs were installed). I will call Tough Dog tomorrow (and inform Opposite Lock Epping) and inform them of what occurred (hoping they will reimburse some of/all the $500 I have to fork out tomorrow). I chose Tough Dog thinking it was one of the strongest in the industry and a reputable brand. I will see how the re-tempering goes (how the ride feels) and what Tough Dog have to say when i phone them. Will be interesting. I will either be re-reimbursed, or will dismiss Tough Dog from any future purchases.
27 May 2015
Kelvin (TREXGQ) Premium Member
That's not good Tony. Do you think the problem may be the suspension rating you installed may not be the ideal rating for your vehicle load/weight?
I had my tough dog for the past 8 months with no complaint. But they were coil spring.
Looks like many of our trucks are in emergency room now :) I am getting my clutch replaced at AUS4WD as we speak.
27 May 2015
Tony (le Dakar)
It appears there were two issues. 1) The rear leafs suggested were way to firm for the load i was carrying. I should have gone softer leafs.and 2) The leafs have sagged prematurely (not due to weight) and failed adding to the already stiff ride. The suspension place said the tempering had not been done correctly with this set of leafs (they have come across this on other occasions) causing them to sag. They weighed the car, discussed with me the typical 4WDing I do and the articulation needed, assessed how far the shockers can extend and are re-setting (and re-tempering) the curves in the leafs to suit. As much as I am disappointed in the premature failing, I am looking forward to Saturday to experience what they have done. Will be interesting to see how i go with Tough Dog when i phone them.

Good luck with your vehicles Tony & Kelvin. Like many components, always hera 'good & bad' about many brands, but have heard far more negative reports than positive in relation to Tough Dogs.

Weather is looking ok for Saturday so hopefully it wont be too muddy.

Yes, it will be good to see Gary in his new vehicle. I now presume Kelvin is coming for sure & if Gary does join us in his new 'truck', that will make 8 vehicles.

Kelvin, do I have to alter 'trip numbers' for you to confirm?
27 May 2015
Tony (le Dakar)
Thanks Allan. I had not heard bad reports on the Tough Dogs and had them in the GU Patrol. However- Once bitten, twice shy.
27 May 2015
Matthew (discomatt)
Yep I am with Allan, have heard a lot of horror stories of tough dog failures and everything from sagging springs to shocker fade which is there most common complaint from people running them on corrugated roads. IMO they are so popular because of the massive advertising campaign they run with the likes of 4wd action and people like Simon Christie. I have run Ride Pro for 5 years at half the cost and only had issues caused by over extension of the shocks due to extra mods I have done, next set for before our big trip will be Koni and King springs.

Who is the suspension shop doing the rework? I would get a written report from them and then ring OL manager to get his email address and send a copy to him and tough dog with a please explain and request for reinbursment .

What has Gary got? Did we get led up the garden path re another troopie? Maybe he wants a more comfortable car in his old age... OUCH sorry Gary
27 May 2015
Tony (le Dakar)
The suspension shop I purchased the Though Dogs off was Opposite Lock Epping. The suspension shop doing the repairs is Center Line in Thomastown. I did get a sense of confidence when he took the time to explain what is needed for my typical driving and what went wrong with the current set. I will take your advice on getting the written report.
Regarding Gary's replacement vehicle, I don't want to rain on his parade. I will let him tell us all what he has opted to replace the Troopie. Perhaps a teaser- "and on V8th God made the .......????? "
Hoping he makes it this weekend either with a new vehicle or riding shot-gun. Lets see when he next posts. Cheers

Tony sorry to here about your suspension,I am sure if you go and have a chat with Dave at Epping he will work something out he seems like a reasonable bloke.
I to have had repairs since my last Tallarook trip a month ago, front uni and axle seals also castor correction brackets.
Allan a few of the tracks we will be driving close on the 11th June so we are good for this weekend.
The Big Pig is absolutely ready and raring to go,got to keep those Japanese trucks honest.
27 May 2015
Tony (le Dakar)
Thanks Allan. I will call Dave tomorrow to discuss and see what happens. I think Tough Dog will probably play the biggest part in the outcome. Looks like were all coming back from repairs.

I spoke to Gary tonight. His new (V8) beast wont be available for this weekend, however he is looking at meeting us at the Strath Creek Hotel and then riding shot gun with various vehicles throughout the day (keep him away from the bog holes on 'Bills Track') :-)

Good to hear that that all vehicles should be ok for Saturday after a few of us have had some repairs done. Mine is fixed & gets a wheel alignment in the morning. Shame Gary wont have his new beast.

Al, did a basic route last night that included about 6 tracks in Tallarook that will be seasonally closed. Have also included 'the ladder' at Dissa as I think it is only about 20 mins away from the Horan Track/Murchison Gap junction. I had a look at a video & I then remembered the track from my only visit to Dissa some 8 -10 yrs ago. Matt, some of the side angles are fairly severe & the time I was there, a Suzuki Sierra decided to have a little 'lay down'.

So if all goes to plan, am hoping to be heading towards Dissa by about 2.30pm and hitting 'the ladder' around 3ish. If we happen to get held up in Tallarook, reckon we should arrange a trip to Dissa sometime in June/July as there are only a couple of seasonal closures there.

List of planned tracks Kelvin, but as we all know, things dont always go as planned...lol.
East Loop, Falls Ck, Cable, Tehan No.2, Steep un named tk between Tehan 2 & 4, Tehans No.4. Am also including Steep & Phone Tks even though I probably wont drive them, but happy to go to both for those who do.

From there, make our way to 'the ladder' at Dissa. If time is against us, can do a couple more in Tallarook that branch off Horan Tk & do Dissa another day, but if we have no hold ups/issues I think we will get to it.

So are you coming Kelvin, or going to the Expo?

Matt, will be at Yarra Glen Bakery by 8am with plan to leave about 8.15am. If anyone else is coming via Yarra Glen & want to join Matt & myself for the drive to Strath Creek, yell out.

Hi All. Got the car back with the rear leafs all re-assembled. I could feel the difference immediately (feels like on riding on a magic carpet compared to last week). They dismantled the leaf packs, then re-set all of the springs. They put a larger curve on the primary pack (top) to keep them off the secondary (bottom) pack. This has provided the 40mm lift in the rear it was supposed to have. Huge difference.
Gary said he will likely get to Strath Creek Hotel at 9.00am for a quick breakfast.
Regarding the rock face on the left of the 'Ladder' at Mt Disappointment- It is quite an angle. I have not been brave enough to tackle on my own and have waited for a chance to do it with some others (for safety sake). If we run out of time on Saturday, i am sure there will be another chance soon. I am waiting for a Mt Disappointment trip (my backyard) to be advertised by someone who knows where all the good tracks are up there. See you all tomorrow.

Good to hear you have sorted out the suspension. So you will have no excuse when you got stuck :)
Yes, "Ladder" is one of my favorite, an iconic track with a natural off-camber incline. I've done once with Big Al last year, couldn't get up until I touch my magic button. It's also one of the very few tracks that I saw BIGPIG's wheels are not on the ground.....
It is definitely get your heart pumping. It's a very technical track, not too hard, but need "thinking" and picking the right line.

Tony, sorry to see what happened to your truck. I would suggest you to upgrade the CV and with a longer front shafts as you have 2 inches lift. I've heard the factory shaft is not really designed for lift. Yes, I think it's great to learn how to replace a CV. It's always a good idea to bring a spare CV with you so even you can't fix it, someone may know how to fix it for you. I always carry both L and R CVs with me. We did more "interesting" tracks after lunch. One unnamed track particularly was certainly not for faint hearted....

OK. Spent last night (till 3.00am) researching CV's for the Lux. Which to buy and how to install. I think i'm up to it. Will buy 2 tomorrow so i have a spare. On another point, when these things happen, it is good to reflect and try and lean from the experience. So... What are my key leanings?-
1) LESSON 1- When you use your special extended wheel brace at home, make use you re-pack it in the vehicle. The first time i needed it in the bush was the very time it was not available. I will make a special spot for it so it is obvious if it is missing. Lesson Learn't
2) LESSON 2- If after the second at a the hill you don't succeed pull the winch rope out and give the car a hand (that's what i bought it for). So the shearing of the CV yesterday was primarily 'Driver Error' (too much right foot, and not enough mechanical empathy). Lesson Learn't
3) LESSON 3- If you know its the weakest link, carry a spare and know how to fix it. CV and 35mm socket will be purchased tomorrow. Lesson Learn't
4) LESSON 4- When your car has a failure, make sure your comrades don't come near it with a garbage bag. They may try and see if the car fits (thanks Big Al). Lesson Learn't
5) LESSON 5- I bought my first 4WD when I was 19. This September I am turning 50. That's 30 years of 4WDing. This was the first CV joint issue. Take it with a smile. When you tackle the stuff we all do each weekend, this stuff is going to happen. Lesson Learn't

Anyway, looking forward to the 4WD show today, learning how to change a CV, our next 4WD trip, and at some stage- Deep Creek.

Take care all.

Haha.... my trolley jack works! ..... but not jacking up my truck :)

Yes, I have very limited mechanical skills but if I know anyone who are mechanical-minded (e.g. Peter, Matt). they can help with the tools I carry.

Hahahaha...I love the lesson 4! ....
Very true with other lessons. I've seen many Hilux with broken CV especially once they have lifted them, they are prone to break if being driven too hard. I kept saying "winch, winch" at the bottom of phone trk after seeing you give it a good few attempts without success......also, very very be careful when you try to back up a hill...... the chance of breaking them are 10x higher!.....

Thanks Kelvin. I read about the additional stress when trying to reverse uphill. Something about the load being on the opposite of each of the drive teeth. Made me think about the reversing i did uphill at Tallarook Take-2 when setting up for that snatch on the final track we did. Not to worry. I have it clearly in my mind now.
I priced the CV's through Terrain Tamer at the show today. $250 each. Will definitely be getting a spare.
Cheers.
